Kinnaur in May is one of the most underrated months to visit. The apple orchards are in full bloom, the roads from Shimla are usually working, and you have the valley largely to yourself before the summer rush hits in June.
But Kinnaur in May is not a beach trip. Mornings and nights are genuinely cold. Roads need a live check before you leave. And if someone in your group expects snowfall and ski-resort vibes, they need to recalibrate.
This guide tells you exactly what to expect, what to pack, which villages to go to, and what most travel blogs get completely wrong about planning this trip.
Quick Answer
Kinnaur in May is a good time to visit. Days are clear and comfortable, the landscape is turning green, and the main sights â Kalpa, Sangla, and Chitkul â are all accessible without the crowd pressure of peak summer.
The access route is NH-5 via Shimla, and it is generally open in May. That said, sections near Wangtu and Tapri can still see road work or short closures, so checking road status the morning you leave is not optional.
Nights drop close to freezing even in May. Carry layers. Do not assume “summer” means warm evenings.
Is May a Good Time to Visit Kinnaur?

Yes, with the right expectations
April to June is consistently one of the two best windows to visit Kinnaur (the other being September to October), and May sits right in the middle of that.
What makes May work
The weather is pleasant, the skies are clear, and the drive through the Sutlej gorge is at its most dramatic. The apple trees in the Sangla Valley and around Kalpa are either in bloom or just past it, and the villages feel alive in a way they do not in the dead of winter.
Who May suits best
Travellers who want a real Himachali hill experience without the summer holiday crowd, families who cannot travel during school holidays, and anyone planning to continue further into Spiti once Kunzum Pass opens.
One honest caveat
Kinnaur’s weather is mountain weather. Even in May, a cloudy afternoon can turn cold fast. Build flexibility into your days, not just your nights.
What Is the Weather Like in Kinnaur in May?

Kinnaur in May feels like proper mountain spring. Sunny during the day, cold as soon as the sun dips.
One travel reference puts the summer temperature range across 8°C to 28°C. Another seasonal guide lists it at 8°C to 30°C. For Kalpa specifically, May averages tend to be around 16°C high and 2°C low â so if you are expecting warm evenings and an open window at night, adjust that expectation now.
The middle of the day in the valley â around Sangla or Reckong Peo â can feel genuinely warm in direct sun. But climb up to Kalpa, where you are sitting above 2,700 metres, and the wind makes it feel ten degrees colder.
In our experience sending groups to Kinnaur in May, the most common complaint is not the cold â it is travellers not believing the cold in advance. Pack the jacket. Take the thermals.
Can You See Snow in Kinnaur in May?

This is where most people who have not been to Kinnaur confuse themselves.
The main stays â Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul â are not buried in snow in May. The roads are accessible and the villages are functional. But look up at the higher ridges and peaks and you will see snow on them clearly, especially around Kinner Kailash.
What you will not get is a snowfall experience or deep snow underfoot at the village level. If someone in your group is expecting to walk through snowdrifts, they need to know that May is spring here, not winter.
The upper stretches beyond Chitkul toward the Hindustan Tibet Road can still have snow patches in May. But those stretches are not on the normal tourist circuit anyway.
Are Kinnaur Roads Open in May and Is It Safe to Go?

The main access to Kinnaur is NH-5 via Shimla, and this route is generally open in May. A 2026 road update confirmed the Shimla to Kaza route via Kinnaur was open as early as March, which is a positive indicator for May.
That said, mountain roads are never a fixed guarantee. Sections near Wangtu and Tapri â which sit along the Sutlej gorge â regularly see road work, occasional landslide clearing, or short closures due to ice damage from winter. The gorge is narrow and the repair work is ongoing every season.
Our team always tells travellers the same thing: check the road status the night before and again the morning you leave. Do not rely on a blog post that was written two months ago.

Do You Need Any Permit for Kinnaur in May?

For Indian nationals
There is no inner line permit required for a standard Kinnaur trip covering Reckong Peo, Kalpa, Sangla, and Chitkul. You travel freely on NH-5 and the connecting roads to these towns.
The important restriction: roads leading to Shipki La and Kaurik are not accessible without proper authority clearance. These are border-area roads and you simply cannot drive them as a tourist. The official district guidance is clear on this.
All travellers â Indian and foreign â should carry a valid identity card. There are checkpoints in Kinnaur and ID checks happen, especially as you go deeper toward Chitkul.
For foreign nationals
Permit requirements depend on which route and how deep into the valley you plan to go. Rules can vary and have changed in previous seasons. We recommend checking with a local operator before finalising any plan.
Which Places in Kinnaur Are Best to Visit in May?
Kalpa

Kalpa is our first recommendation for any trip to Kinnaur in May. It sits above Reckong Peo at roughly 2,700 metres and the view of Kinner Kailash from here on a clear morning is something people genuinely cannot describe when they come back.
The village itself is quiet, the orchards around it are green in May, and the walking trails are easy. What most tourists get wrong about Kalpa: they spend 30 minutes there and drive off. Kalpa deserves at least one night, ideally two. The morning light on the peak changes every hour and the evenings are very still.
Sangla

Sangla Valley sits along the Baspa River and in May it is one of the most pleasant places in Himachal to simply be. The valley floor is wide and green, the drive along the Baspa is easy, and the village has decent accommodation options for all budgets.
In our experience, travellers who come to Kinnaur specifically for the landscape remember Sangla the most. It just looks the way mountain valleys are supposed to look â wide open, surrounded by ridges, not crowded.
Chitkul

Chitkul is about 28 km from Sangla and it is the last Indian village on the Hindustan Tibet Road. Most people visit it as a day trip from Sangla.
In May, Chitkul is accessible but always confirm road conditions before heading out â the stretch from Sangla to Chitkul can occasionally have snow patches or loose gravel sections in early May. The village itself is tiny and very quiet. Do not skip the fresh trout at the small dhaba near the main road if it is running â the guy running it sources the fish from the Baspa.
Reckong Peo and Nearby Villages

Reckong Peo is the district headquarters of Kinnaur and your most practical logistics base. Kalpa is just 9 km from here. Reckong Peo has ATMs, fuel, pharmacies, and phone signal â none of which you can count on once you go further.
We always tell groups to stock up in Reckong Peo before heading into the valley. Carry cash. The smaller villages often do not accept UPI.
Kalpa or Sangla: Which Is Better in May?

Both, if you have the time â and on a 4 or 5 day trip, you absolutely do.
If you can only do one: Kalpa for views, Sangla for valley experience. Kalpa gives you the Kinner Kailash in your face every morning. Sangla gives you the wide green valley, the river, and the slower pace that makes you actually feel like you are in the mountains.
On a first Kinnaur trip, we always say do not choose. Spend two nights in Kalpa, one in Sangla, and you have covered what the valley does best.
Suggested 4-Day Itinerary for Kinnaur in May

Day 1 â Shimla to Sangla (about 223 km)
Start early from Shimla, ideally by 6 AM. The Sutlej gorge section before Wangtu can slow you down and you want daylight for the Sangla turn-off. Reach Sangla by late afternoon, settle in, walk along the Baspa.
Day 2 â Sangla to Chitkul and back
Day trip to Chitkul in the morning. Return to Sangla for lunch. In the afternoon, explore the Sangla village and the orchards. The dhaba near the Sangla market square serves good rajma chawal â simple but filling.
Day 3 â Sangla to Kalpa (via Reckong Peo)
Stock up in Reckong Peo â fuel, cash, medicines. Drive the 9 km up to Kalpa. Check in and do nothing for the rest of the afternoon except sit with a cup of tea and look at the mountains. That is genuinely the right move on Day 3.
Day 4 â Kalpa morning + return toward Shimla
Wake up before 7 AM and walk to the upper viewpoint in Kalpa. The Kinner Kailash at sunrise is what people come here for. Start your return by 10 AM. Shimla by evening.
Suggested 5-Day Kinnaur Itinerary for May

Same as the 4-day plan, but add a buffer day after Day 3 in Kalpa. Use it to explore the apple orchards, walk down to Rogi village, or simply rest at altitude before the return drive.
This version works well for families and couples who do not want to rush. Mountain trips where you are always in a vehicle get tiring fast. A Kalpa rest day is when the trip actually becomes memorable.
If you are combining with a Shimla stop, build that in as Day 0 and stretch the full plan to 6 days.
How to Reach Kinnaur in May

Road travel via Shimla on NH-5 is the only practical route for most travellers. There is no train or flight to Kinnaur.
From Shimla to Sangla, the distance is about 223 km and the drive takes most of a day depending on road conditions. From Shimla to Kalpa, it is about 225 km. From Reckong Peo to Kalpa, it is just 9 km up the hill.
You can hire a vehicle in Shimla or Chandigarh. A high-clearance vehicle is not strictly necessary for the Kinnaur in May circuit â unlike Spiti, the road here is a proper highway for most of the route â but a good SUV is always more comfortable on mountain roads than a compact sedan.
See our Kinnaur tour packages if you want a vehicle, stays, and logistics handled together. Or reach out via our contact page with your group size and dates.
What to Pack for Kinnaur in May

Layers are the entire strategy here. Not one thick jacket â layers you can add and remove as the day shifts.
Carry thermal inners (top and bottom), a mid-layer fleece, and a windproof outer jacket. The wind at Kalpa in the morning will cut through a hoodie fast. Good socks matter more than people expect â cold feet ruin long days in the mountains.
Sunscreen with high SPF is non-negotiable at this altitude. UV is strong even on slightly overcast days and you will burn without noticing. Add proper UV-blocking sunglasses, especially if you are doing any walking near snowfields.
A basic medicine kit: paracetamol, ORS, antacid, band-aids. There are pharmacies in Reckong Peo, but nothing reliable beyond that. Download offline maps before you leave â signal disappears for long stretches.
What Is the Budget for a Trip to Kinnaur in May?

The honest answer: it depends on how you travel, not just where you go.
The biggest cost variables in Kinnaur are transport (hired cab vs. self-drive) and accommodation (homestay vs. guesthouse vs. hotel in Reckong Peo). Food costs in the valley are low â most meals are simple local food at dhabas and small guesthouses.
What we can say from running trips here: Kinnaur is significantly more budget-friendly than Ladakh or a packaged Shimla-Manali circuit. The valley has not been commercialised the way those destinations have, and that shows in both prices and the overall experience.
Can You Combine Kinnaur with Spiti in May?

You can, but with one important condition: the onward route from Kinnaur into Spiti depends entirely on road status at the time of your travel.
Kinnaur sits on the approach to Spiti via the Shimla route. The road runs through Nako and eventually connects to Tabo and Kaza. In May, this connection is possible but not guaranteed â sections ahead can still have snow or ice closures, and the situation changes week to week.
What we tell travellers planning a Kinnaur-Spiti combo: plan Kinnaur confidently, and treat Spiti as a conditional extension. If the route is confirmed open when you are there, you extend. If not, Kinnaur alone is a complete trip worth making.
For Spiti-specific planning, check our Spiti Valley tour packages.
Travel Tips for Kinnaur in May

Start driving early. This is not optional advice, it is the rule that separates good mountain trips from exhausting ones. Start by 6 AM from wherever you stayed the night before. The Sutlej gorge section is narrow, traffic bunches up mid-morning when trucks and local vehicles all move at once, and you want daylight for every mountain stretch.
Carry your identity card at all times. There are checkpoints in Kinnaur and ID is asked for. Aadhaar works fine. Passport for foreign travellers.
Do not attempt the road to Chitkul after 4 PM if you have not been on it before. The return in fading light on a road you do not know is stressful and avoidable.
Skip the tourist-facing viewpoints near Kalpa’s main road that charge you for a fenced platform view. Walk 15 minutes to the upper trail instead â the same Kinner Kailash view, completely free, and you are not looking at it through a safety railing.
Do not casually try to explore roads near Shipki La or Kaurik. These are restricted border routes. The penalty is not worth what you would see, and the road is not designed for tourist vehicles anyway.
