Bir Billing

Bir Billing Travel Guide 2026 โ€” Everything You Need to Know

Bir Billing is known internationally for one thing: the paragliding. The 2015 Paragliding World Cup was held here. The launch site at Billing, at 2,400 metres, and the landing zone at Bir, 14 km away and 1,100 metres lower, create flying conditions that are considered among the finest in the world. Professional pilots come from Europe and South America to fly here. And tandem flights โ€” where a passenger flies strapped to an experienced pilot โ€” have made the experience accessible to anyone.

But Bir is more than its sky. Below the famous landing field, there’s a Tibetan refugee settlement with working monasteries, a growing cafe culture, river camping beside the Uhl, and the kind of quiet mountain-town atmosphere that increasingly rare in Himachal. HimTrails includes Bir Billing in several of our Himachal circuits, and we always find it surprises travellers who come only for the flying and discover a place worth staying for.

Why Bir Billing Is More Than Paragliding

The Tibetan settlement at Bir was established in the 1960s as part of the broader Tibetan resettlement programme. The community that has grown here over sixty years has created something distinctive โ€” a blend of Tibetan culture, mountain lifestyle, and the particular energy that comes from adventure sport tourism. The Tashi Jong Monastery compound is the largest institution in the settlement and includes a school, a workshop for traditional Tibetan arts, and a community centre that produces performances and cultural events.

The physical setting helps enormously. Bir sits in the Kangra foothills at about 1,525 metres, on the edge of the Uhl River valley with the Dhauladhar range rising steeply to the north. The camping sites along the Uhl are among the best riverside camps in Himachal โ€” clear water, good shade, fire-permitted in designated spots, and the paragliders visible in the sky above as a constant, cheerful backdrop.

Bir is also home to a vibrant Tibetan community. The nearby Chokling Monastery and the Tibetan Colony offer a peaceful atmosphere, traditional Buddhist architecture, prayer wheels, and monasteries where visitors can observe Tibetan culture and spiritual practices.

Rajgundha Valley

Travellers can reach Rajgundha by trekking from Billing or via a scenic mountain road. The valley remains relatively untouched by tourism, making it perfect for slow travel, nature walks, and quiet Himalayan sunsets.

Paragliding in Bir Billing

The Setup

The launch at Billing (2,400 m) is accessed by road from Bir (17 km, 1 hour drive). The tandem flight launches from Billing and flies for 20โ€“45 minutes before landing in the Bir landing field. The altitude drop is approximately 1,100 metres, making it one of the longest accessible tandem flights in India.

Solo Training

Multiple certified paragliding schools in Bir offer P1, P2, and P3 courses for those who want to learn to fly independently. A full P2 (solo flying) certification takes about 10โ€“15 days. Bir is considered one of the best places in Asia to learn paragliding due to the consistent conditions and experienced instructor community.

Cost

Tandem flights range from โ‚น2,500โ€“3,500 for a standard 20โ€“30 minute flight. Video and photo packages are extra. HimTrails arranges verified operator bookings as part of our Bir Billing packages โ€” we use only APPI-certified pilots.

Best Season for Paragliding

March to June and September to November. Winds are predictable, thermals are strong, and conditions are most consistent. Avoid monsoon (Julyโ€“August) when visibility is poor and conditions are unsafe.

The Billing Meadow Viewpoint: Worth visiting even if you’re not flying โ€” the meadow at Billing at 2,400 m overlooks the Kangra Valley with the Dhauladhar range behind. On clear days, the view extends to Dharamshala and beyond.

Things to Do in Bir Billing

Camping by the Uhl River

The riverbank campsites are accessible and well-managed. Night camping here, with the paragliders coming down in the evenings and the Dhauladhar lit by alpenglow, is one of the more complete outdoor experiences in Himachal.

Trekking

Several trails from Bir connect to the Dhauladhar range trails that extend from Dharamshala. The trek from Billing meadow toward Raj Gundha valley (3 hours one way) is excellent and relatively uncrowded. The Rajgundha to Bir loop (2 days) is a good short trekking option for those combining Bir with Dharamshala.

Bird Watching

The Bir area is exceptionally rich for birdwatching โ€” the mix of subtropical foothills and mountain forest habitats means a high species count. The tea gardens of Palampur (15 km from Bir) are a particularly productive birdwatching area.

Palampur Tea Gardens

Palampur, 15 km from Bir, is the commercial tea hub of Kangra Valley โ€” the northernmost tea-growing region in India. The Kangra tea estates produce a green tea with a distinctive muscatel character, and visits to working estates (several are open to visitors) are interesting.

Monasteries & Tibetan Culture in Bir

Tashi Jong Monastery

The main institution of the Bir Tibetan settlement, Tashi Jong is home to Khampagar Monastery and a community of monks and nuns following the Drukpa Kagyu tradition. The monastery complex includes temples, residential quarters, a school, and a workshop producing traditional Tibetan tangkas, woodcarvings, and silver metalwork. Visitors are welcome and can observe the workshop and main temple.

Chokling Monastery

Founded by Chokgyur Lingpa, one of the most important Nyingma masters of the 19th century, the Chokling Monastery in Bir is a smaller and quieter institution than Tashi Jong but architecturally beautiful. The main temple contains exceptionally fine murals.

Sherabling Monastery

8 km from Bir at Bhattu, Sherabling is a large and active monastery of the Kagyu tradition that includes a teaching programme open to international students. The environment here โ€” surrounded by pine forest, with the Dhauladhar visible above โ€” is conducive to the extended study retreats for which the monastery is known.
