The road that crosses it is the only motorable link between the Rohru side and the remote villages of Dodra and Kwar, which sit on the far side of the Chanshal range near the Uttarakhand boundary.

Most travellers come here for the drive and the landscape rather than for any built attraction. The road climbs out of the apple belt around Rohru and Chirgaon, works its way up through deodar and pine forest past Larot, and eventually opens onto bare alpine meadow and wind-scoured ridge. There is nothing at the top except grass, rock, weather and a long view. That is the point of it.

The one planning fact that matters more than any other: this road is seasonal. It is generally described as open from around May to November and snowbound outside that window, and even inside the season the route can shut at short notice after snowfall or heavy rain. Please treat the season as a rough guide, not a schedule, and confirm conditions locally before you set out.

Quick answer: what is Chanshal Pass?

Chanshal Pass is a high mountain pass in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, reached by road from Rohru. It carries the only motorable route between Rohru and the remote Dodra Kwar valley, and travellers visit it for the high-altitude drive, the alpine meadows and the wide mountain views. Allow a full day from Rohru. The road is seasonal and rough, so check conditions before departure.

    Latest destination forecast

Chanshal Pass Live Weather, Forecast & Travel Essentials

Latest model-based mountain forecast and practical location details for planning your visit.

    Measurement units
    °C
    °F

At a glance

Location details for this destination

पर्यटक स्थल

Chanshal Pass

District

शिमला

State

Himachal Pradesh

Elevation

4,520 mApproximate ground elevation supplied to the forecast model

Place type

Mountain pass

Time zone

Asia/Kolkata

Local time

गुरु, 24 सितम्बर, 2:56 अपराह्न

Updating the latest forecast…

On the ground

Seasonal weather

Suitable for

Live weather requires JavaScript. You start among apple orchards and river-bottom villages, pass through thick conifer forest, and end up on open grassland where nothing grows above ankle height and the wind does not stop.

From the top, the view runs across ridge after ridge of the Chanshal range and out toward the peaks along the Himachal and Uttarakhand boundary. On a clear day it is one of the widest horizons you can reach by road in Shimla district. On a cloudy day you may see very little, and that is a real possibility worth accepting in advance.

There is also a geographic interest to the place. This road is the lifeline for Dodra and Kwar, two villages that were reachable only on foot until the road was completed in stages and reached the pass around 2009. Standing at the top and understanding that everything on the far side depends on this single stretch of road gives the drive a weight that a viewpoint alone would not have.

Snow is part of the appeal for many visitors. Patches can linger in shaded hollows well into the warmer months. It is genuinely unpredictable, and we would rather you travelled expecting meadow and were pleasantly surprised than the other way round.

For photographers, the combination of bare ridgelines, big skies and grazing livestock in the summer months is unusually good. For anyone who simply enjoys a demanding mountain drive, this is among the more memorable routes in the district.

Geography and natural significance

Chanshal is a range, not just a single point. It forms the barrier between the Pabbar Valley around Rohru and the Dodra Kwar valley beyond, and the pass is the notch in that barrier where the road gets across.

A note on altitude, because the published figures conflict

Reference sources give the road pass itself at roughly 3,749 to 3,800 metres, which is about 12,300 to 12,470 feet. A very widely repeated figure of 4,520 metres, or 14,830 feet, appears to belong to Chanshal Peak, the summit that rises above the pass and is described as the highest point in Shimla district. A great many travel pages have merged the two numbers. We have shown both, labelled clearly, rather than pick the more impressive one.

Either way, the pass sits well above the treeline. The vegetation sequence on the way up is one of the more striking things about the drive: dense deodar and pine lower down, rhododendron and birch through the middle stretch, then stunted growth and finally open pasture near the top, grazed through the summer.

Weather at this height changes quickly and the pass is badly exposed to wind. Several accounts describe visitors sheltering behind rocks at the top even on otherwise pleasant days. Cloud can move in and close the view within minutes.

Snow accumulates heavily here through the winter and blocks the route for roughly half the year. This is not decorative snowfall. It is the reason the villages beyond are cut off, and it is why the season is short.

What to see and experience

The approach road

For most visitors this is the main event. The stretch above Chirgaon and Larot climbs steadily through forest with the valley opening up behind you. There are frequent points where it is worth stopping, provided you can pull fully clear of the road.

The pass itself

Open meadow, a wide view, strong wind and not much else. Half an hour to an hour is usually enough unless you are photographing seriously or walking a short distance along the ridge.

Short walks near the top

The ground on either side of the pass is open and walkable for short distances. Move slowly, watch your footing on loose ground, and stay well away from steep edges and any snow slope.

Snow patches, when present

These may be found in shaded hollows outside the deep winter months. Please do not walk out onto a snowfield to reach a photograph. Depth and stability are impossible to judge from the edge.

The view toward Dodra Kwar

From the pass, the road drops away toward the far valley. Even if you are not continuing, looking down that side gives you the clearest sense of why this crossing matters locally.

Saru Lake

A separate and much bigger undertaking, covered below.

We have deliberately not named specific viewpoints or trails, because no officially marked and named viewpoints or waymarked trails are documented at the pass.

Saru Lake near Chanshal Pass

Saru Lake, also written Saru Tal and sometimes marketed as Chanshal Lake, is a natural high-altitude lake in the mountains beyond the pass. It is a real and well-attested place, but it is important to be clear about what visiting it actually involves.

It is not a roadside stop and it is not a short detour

Saru Lake is reached on foot only, starting from a point on the Chanshal Pass road where vehicles are left. Trip reports consistently describe it as a full day’s walking from the pass area.

Reported walking times vary, and you should plan for the longer end

Accounts give roughly 8 km one way and around three hours each way from the parking point, while trekking operators describe four to five hours to reach the lake, crossing a series of small ridges. Some accounts mention a small glacier section to cross before the lake, particularly earlier in the season. The variation between sources probably reflects different starting points and different fitness levels.

What this means in practice

Combining Chanshal Pass and Saru Lake in a single day trip from Rohru is not realistic for most travellers. If Saru Lake is your priority, plan an overnight base at Rohru or Larot and treat it as its own full day.

Fitness and suitability

This is a long walk at altitude on open mountainside. It is not appropriate for young children, for most senior citizens, or for anyone unused to sustained walking at height. It is not suitable for travellers with limited mobility.

Please take a local guide

We have found no evidence of an official marked, signed or maintained trail, and no managing authority. Route-finding across open high ground is much harder than it looks, mist can arrive quickly, and mobile connectivity in this area is reported as poor to absent. Independent attempts by visitors unfamiliar with the ground are not something we would encourage.

One practical note from trip reports: the lake water is described as unsuitable for drinking. Carry all the water you need for the full day.

Before you commit to this walk, confirm current conditions, snow cover on the route and guide availability locally. Conditions on open high ground change from week to week and no reliable published source tracks them.

Seasonal opening, road status and snow at Chanshal Pass

When is the road generally open?

The Shimla district administration describes the Chanshal Pass road as open to traffic from around May to November, and closed for the remainder of the year because of snow. Some travel sources give a shorter window ending in October. Both patterns appear in circulation, which itself tells you the end of the season is not fixed.

Why there is no fixed opening date

The route opens when snow clearance and conditions allow, and that changes from year to year. Early in the season, even an open road can carry a great deal of slush, meltwater and loose surface. An early-season opening is not the same thing as comfortable driving.

Chanshal Pass road status is not something you can look up once

It changes with the weather. A route that was fine one morning can be blocked by fresh snow, a slip or fallen material the next. This is a single road with no alternative, so a closure means turning back rather than going around.

Can snow remain into late spring or June?

Possibly, and there are first-hand reports of visitors encountering snow in June. Residual patches in shaded ground are described as occasional rather than reliable. We cannot promise you snow in any given month, and you should not plan a trip on that basis. If snow is what you want, treat it as a bonus.

मानसून

Through roughly July and August, rain is the main concern rather than snow. Mountain roads in this region are vulnerable to slips, mud and surface damage during heavy rain, and visibility at the top can be poor for days. Travel in this window is possible but needs flexibility and a willingness to abandon the plan.

How to confirm before you travel

Ask locally rather than relying on a website. In practice this means a Rohru-based taxi operator or hotel, the local police station or administration office, or drivers who run the Rohru side of the route regularly. They will know whether the road went through yesterday. Confirm again on the morning you travel, not just the week before.

Best time to visit Chanshal Pass

The broad answer: the practical season runs from around late May or June through to October, with the most comfortable driving usually in the middle and later part of that window.

Late spring

The road may be open but often carries slush, meltwater and a poor surface. Snow patches are more likely at this time, which some travellers want, but the trade-off is harder driving.

गर्मियाँ

Generally the most reliable stretch for road surface and daylight. Meadows are green and grazed, and this is when the drive is at its most pleasant. Afternoon cloud is common.

Monsoon, roughly July into August

Green and dramatic, but the least predictable. Rain-related road problems are the main risk. Only worth planning if your dates are flexible.

Post-monsoon, September into October

Often the best light and the clearest long-range views of the year, with settled air after the rain. Cold at the top, and daylight is shortening.

Early winter

The season closes with snowfall, and the timing varies. Once snow arrives at this height, the route becomes unsuitable for ordinary visitor travel.

Best time of day

Start early from Rohru. Mornings tend to be clearer, afternoon cloud frequently builds over the ridges, and you want a comfortable margin to be off the mountain before dusk.

On crowds

This route sees far less traffic than the well-known Himachal passes, though we would not describe it as empty in peak summer. Weekends are busier than weekdays.

How to reach Chanshal Pass from Rohru

Rohru is the practical base

It has accommodation, fuel, food and taxi operators who know the route. Everything above it thins out quickly.

The route

From Rohru the road follows the Pabbar Valley through Chirgaon, then climbs via Larot toward the pass. Larot is generally the last settlement of any size before the top and is where the roughest climbing begins.

Chanshal Pass distance from Rohru: approximately 45 to 60 km

Published figures vary considerably, from around 45 km up to 70 km, partly because some sources measure to different points and at least one openly uses straight-line rather than road distance. Treat 45 to 60 km as a working range.

Driving time from Rohru: allow roughly 3 to 5 hours each way

This is not a distance you can convert into time at normal rates. Expect slow going.

शिमला से

Two routes recur in local accounts: via Theog, Kotkhai, Kharapathar and Hatkoti to Rohru, or via Theog, Narkanda and Sungri to Rohru. Total distances from Shimla are reported anywhere between roughly 155 and 180 km depending on route. Shimla to Chanshal Pass and back in a single day is not a sensible plan. Stay at Rohru.

Taxis

Local taxi operators in Rohru do run this route in season, and hiring a driver who knows the road is the option we recommend for most travellers.

Buses

Bus services have historically operated between Rohru and Dodra Kwar, but the available information is old and frequency appears very limited. Do not build a day plan around catching one.

Fuel

Fill your tank in Rohru. No reliable fuel is documented beyond it, and you need enough for the full return climb.

Last reliable food

Rohru, or Chirgaon. Carry food and water for the day. Seasonal tea stalls have been reported near the top in some years, but nothing you should count on.

Parking

There is no built parking. Vehicles stop on the roadside at the pass. Pull fully clear so that others, including local traffic and supply vehicles, can pass.

Returning

Plan to be heading down in good time. Driving this road after dark is something we would ask you not to do.

Road and vehicle considerations

This section matters more here than on most attraction pages, because road condition is the main thing travellers get wrong about Chanshal.

Expect a narrow, rough road

Accounts consistently describe long stretches barely wide enough for one vehicle, steep gradients, hairpin bends and blind curves, with sections that are broken, unsurfaced, rocky or muddy rather than tarred.

Slush and loose surface

Early season and after rain, the upper stretch can be slushy with loose rock. This is where low-clearance vehicles get into difficulty.

On vehicle type

Higher-clearance vehicles are widely recommended for this route, and several sources specifically suggest four-wheel drive. We have not found an authority that makes any vehicle type formally mandatory, so we will not tell you it is a rule. What we will say plainly is that a low-clearance hatchback or sedan is a poor choice for this road, and that many travellers are better served hiring a local vehicle with a local driver.

Local drivers are a genuine advantage

They know which sections have deteriorated this season, where to pass safely, and when to turn back. On a road with no alternative route, that judgement is worth a great deal.

Weather closures

Fresh snow or heavy rain can close the route with no notice. Do not attempt the climb immediately after snowfall without local advice.

Recovery and repair

There is effectively none up there. A breakdown or puncture near the top is a serious inconvenience. Carry a working spare and basic tools.

Driving after dark

Avoid it. There is no lighting, no barrier for much of the way, and no easy help.

Permits, fees and restrictions

There is no documented entry ticket or gate fee for Chanshal Pass itself. It is a public mountain road rather than a managed tourist site.

Beyond that, we are going to be careful. We have not found an authoritative source that confirms or rules out permit or local permission requirements for this route or for the onward area toward Dodra Kwar. Rather than tell you no permit is needed and risk being wrong, we would ask you to check locally before you travel.

Sensible precautions in any case:

Carry photo identity for everyone travelling, and your vehicle documents.

Ask in Rohru whether any temporary restriction is in force. Local administration and police can and do restrict movement after weather events.

If you intend to continue beyond the pass toward Dodra and Kwar, confirm the position for that onward stretch separately.

Drone use is regulated nationally in India and rules can change. If you plan to fly, check the current position and ask locally first.

Recommended visit duration

Treat this as a full-day excursion from Rohru. It is not a half-day outing and it is certainly not a stop on the way to somewhere else.

At the pass itself: 30 to 60 minutes is enough for most visitors. Longer if you are photographing or walking a little along the ridge. The wind tends to shorten people’s stay.

Full return from Rohru: allow the whole day. With roughly 3 to 5 hours of driving each way plus stops, a dawn start is normal.

Adding Saru Lake: this needs its own separate day. Please do not try to fold it into the same trip.

Photography and short walks: build in an extra hour if this matters to you, rather than compressing the return leg.

Weather margin: leave slack. Road conditions, a slip, a herd on the road or fog can all add an hour without warning.

If your available time is genuinely half a day, this attraction is not the right choice, and we would rather tell you that now.

Accessibility and traveller suitability

Being straightforward about this is more useful than being encouraging.

Suits well: photographers, road-trip travellers, motorcyclists and adventure drivers, fit couples, small groups with their own vehicle, and travellers who actively enjoy rough mountain roads.

Suits with care: families with older children who travel well; solo travellers, provided you go with a local driver rather than alone.

Often does not suit: young children, many senior citizens, travellers prone to motion sickness, anyone with a heart or respiratory condition without medical advice, and anyone uncomfortable on exposed mountain roads.

Not suitable: wheelchair users and travellers with limited mobility. There is no accessible infrastructure of any kind, the ground at the top is uneven, and the journey is long and rough.

Practical points:

The journey is the demanding part, not the destination. Several hours each way on a rough road is tiring regardless of fitness.

There is no seating and no shelter at the top.

Toilets are not documented anywhere near the pass. Plan around Rohru, Chirgaon and Larot.

Cold and wind exposure at the top are significant even in summer.

The altitude is high enough that some people feel it. See below.

The Saru Lake walk raises all of these requirements substantially.

We would not describe Chanshal Pass as suitable for every traveller, and if any of the above gives you pause, please tell us when you get in touch so we can plan around it honestly.

Altitude, weather and safety

Nothing here is meant to alarm you. These are the ordinary precautions for a high, exposed, remote place.

Dress in layers. Conditions at the top bear no relation to conditions in Rohru. Wind protection matters more than sheer thickness.

Sun protection. Sunlight is strong at this height and glare off snow is worse. Sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat.

Water and food. Carry both. There is nothing reliable up there.

Medicines. Bring your regular medication with you rather than leaving it in the hotel. Help is a long way off.

Move slowly at the top. Walking uphill at this height takes more out of you than expected. Take your time, especially in the first half hour.

Altitude symptoms. Headache, nausea, unusual breathlessness or dizziness can occur at these heights. If someone in your group develops symptoms that concern you, the sensible response is to descend and seek medical advice. Do not press on to finish the plan.

Weather changes fast. Clear can become cloud and rain within a short time. Be willing to turn around.

Stay off snow slopes and unstable edges. No photograph is worth it.

Do not drive the route after fresh snowfall without local advice.

Follow instructions from local authorities. If a road is closed or you are asked to turn back, there is a reason.

Connectivity is poor. Tell someone at your hotel where you are going and roughly when you expect to be back.

What to carry

Warm layers, including a genuine windproof outer layer, in every season

Waterproof jacket, particularly in the monsoon months

Footwear with grip. Proper walking shoes or boots if you plan any walking

Water for the whole day, and more than you think

Food and snacks bought in Rohru

Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat or cap

Power bank. Charging points are not available

Offline maps downloaded in advance, since connectivity is unreliable

Personal medicines and a small first-aid kit

A bag for your own rubbish

Vehicle essentials: working spare, jack, basic tools, full tank from Rohru

Photo identity documents and vehicle papers

Food, toilets and mobile connectivity

We would rather understate this than have you arrive expecting facilities.

At the pass, assume nothing exists. No permanent shops, no restaurant, no toilet block, no shelter. Seasonal tea stalls near the top have been mentioned in some traveller accounts, but they are informal, weather-dependent and absolutely not something to build a day around.

Last reliable food: Rohru, with more limited options at Chirgaon. Eat a proper meal before you begin the climb and carry the rest.

Toilets: use facilities at your hotel or a Rohru eatery before setting out. Nothing is documented at the pass.

Fuel: Rohru. Fill up completely.

Accommodation: Rohru is the practical base. Basic stay options have been reported at Larot, which is useful if you want an early start or intend to walk to Saru Lake. There is no accommodation at the pass itself.

Mobile connectivity: reported as poor to absent through the upper section and at the top. We have not been able to verify which networks perform best, so we are not going to guess. Plan on having no signal.

Emergency assistance and medical facilities: none at the pass. The nearest meaningful help is back down at Rohru, several hours away.

Photography and drone guidance

The landscape here rewards patience more than equipment. Early morning generally gives the clearest air and the best long-range visibility, with afternoon cloud commonly building over the ridges. Late afternoon light across the meadows is lovely when the weather cooperates.

Snow glare can fool your exposure badly. Cloud and mist can close the entire view within minutes, so photograph the shot in front of you rather than waiting for a better one.

Roadside safety

Stop only where you can pull fully clear. This is a single-lane road in places and a stopped vehicle on a blind bend is genuinely dangerous.

Local residents

People here are going about their lives on their only road. Please ask before photographing individuals, and do not photograph homes or interiors without permission.

Do not position yourself on cliff edges, loose ground or snowfields for a photograph.

Drones

Drone operation in India is subject to national regulation and rules change. This is an official matter rather than a suggestion. Check the current requirements before travelling, and ask locally whether any restriction applies to this area. If you cannot confirm, do not fly.

Responsible visiting at Chanshal Pass

Carry every piece of your rubbish back down. There is no collection here and no one to clear up after you.

Litter left in snow reappears in the meadow. It does not disappear.

Stay on existing tracks and walked ground. Alpine turf recovers extremely slowly at this height.

This is grazing land in summer. Give livestock room and do not disturb them.

Do not block the road. This is the only link for the villages beyond, and supply and medical vehicles use it.

Keep the noise down. Loud music at the top spoils the one thing most people came for.

No off-road driving. Tyre damage to high-altitude meadow lasts for years.

Do not walk onto snowfields.

At Saru Lake, camp only where your guide advises, keep well back from the water’s edge, and carry out everything.

If a road is closed or you are asked to turn back, comply.

Nearby places you can realistically combine

We have kept this short deliberately. Adding stops to a Chanshal day is usually a mistake.

Chirgaon

It sits directly on the route between Rohru and the climb, so it costs almost no extra time. It is a small Pabbar Valley settlement known locally for trout fishing, and a natural short stop on the way up or down. Seasonally compatible whenever the road is open.

Larot

It is the last settlement of size before the pass, roughly 20 km short of the top, and is where some travellers base themselves for an early start or for the Saru Lake walk. Also on the route, so no detour.

Hatkoti

It lies on the main approach from the Shimla side and is known for its ancient temple complex beside the Pabbar. It fits naturally into your travel day to or from Rohru rather than into the Chanshal day itself. Add around an hour. Accessible year-round.

Dodra Kwar

It lies beyond the pass and is a genuinely remote area reached by continuing down the far side. This is not a day-trip addition. It requires its own overnight planning and confirmed road conditions on both sides of the pass. We mention it because travellers ask, not because we recommend appending it.

For the wider Shimla district picture, our Shimla travel guide covers the better-known sights around the town itself, which are a very different kind of trip from this one.

A realistic one-day plan from Rohru

This assumes the road is confirmed open and the weather is settled.

Evening before: confirm road conditions with your hotel or driver. Fill the tank in Rohru. Buy food and water.

Early morning: leave Rohru at first light. Aim for a start no later than about 6 am.

Morning: drive via Chirgaon and Larot, stopping briefly where it is safe. Expect roughly 3 to 5 hours to the top.

Late morning to midday: 30 to 60 minutes at the pass. Views, short walk, photographs, packed lunch in whatever shelter you can find.

Early afternoon: begin the descent. Do not linger if cloud is building.

Late afternoon: back at Rohru with daylight to spare.

Where Saru Lake fits: it does not fit in this day. If Saru Lake matters to you, give it a separate day, ideally basing at Larot the night before and going with a local guide. Please drop it entirely if the weather is unsettled, if anyone in the group is not a confident walker, or if you are already running behind.

Build in a fallback. If the road is closed or conditions turn, the Pabbar Valley around Rohru, Chirgaon and Hatkoti gives you a worthwhile day without the climb.

How to include Chanshal Pass in a HimTrails trip

Chanshal Pass works best as a dedicated excursion day built around a night or two in Rohru, rather than as an add-on to a standard Shimla itinerary. The driving distances simply do not allow anything else.

It suits travellers who are drawn to high-altitude road journeys, offbeat routes and photography, and who are comfortable with rough roads and limited facilities. It is a poor fit for travellers who want comfort, short transfers or guaranteed sightseeing.

It combines naturally with the Pabbar Valley itself, and for those with more time and the right conditions, with an onward Dodra Kwar plan.
