It sits beside the Spiti River at roughly 3,650 metres (about 11,980 feet), surrounded by the bare, dramatic mountains of a cold high-altitude desert.

Most travellers do not come to Spiti and skip Kaza. They stay here. The town has the valley’s best spread of hotels, homestays, cafés, shops, fuel and medical help, which makes it the natural place to rest, acclimatise and plan day trips to nearby villages and monasteries.

The one thing to plan for from the start is altitude. Kaza is high enough that your first day should be slow and restful, and feeling fine here does not mean you are ready to rush up to the higher villages and passes nearby.

Quick answer

Kaza is the main town and administrative hub of Spiti Valley, in Himachal Pradesh, sitting at about 3,650 m beside the Spiti River. Travellers use it as a base because it has the valley’s best facilities and easy access to nearby villages and monasteries. Plan two to three nights, and treat your first day as an acclimatisation day.

    Latest destination forecast

Spiti Valley Live Weather, Forecast & It holds the main government offices, the market, the bus stand, and most of Spiti’s shops and services in one place.

The town sits on the left bank of the Spiti River, in a wide part of the valley ringed by high brown mountains. It is a working town first and a tourist stop second, which is part of its character.

Locals recognise two parts. Old Kaza (Kaza Khas) holds older houses and the traditional heart of the settlement. New Kaza (Kaza Soma) holds the newer government offices, hotels and restaurants. Both sit close together and are easy to walk between.

It helps to keep one distinction clear. Kaza is the town. Spiti Valley is the wider region around it, with famous villages, monasteries and lakes that lie some distance away. Kaza is where you base yourself to reach them, not where they all are.

Why visit Kaza?

Kaza gives you a rare thing in Spiti: comfort and services at high altitude. After long approach drives, it is the place to sleep well, eat properly and get organised.

It is also the best base for day trips. The valley’s well-known villages and monasteries are within reach as short excursions, and you can return to a warm room each evening.

The town itself is worth some time. The market, the cafés, the riverside setting and everyday Spitian life give you a feel for the valley that you miss if you only pass through. For photographers, the light and the mountain backdrop are consistently rewarding.

Things to do in Kaza

The best things to do in Kaza are simple and in-town. This keeps your first day gentle while you acclimatise.

Walk the market. The heart of town, good for supplies, woollens, small souvenirs, and a sense of local life.

Visit the town’s monastery. Kaza has a branch of the Sakya (Tangyud) tradition within the town area; the famous larger monasteries are day trips (see below).

Explore Old Kaza. The older lanes give a quieter, more traditional contrast to the newer town.

Sit in a café. Kaza has a small but genuine café culture, good for slow mornings and warm drinks at altitude.

Riverside views. The Spiti River setting is easy to reach and pleasant on foot.

Evening stroll. A short, flat walk in the evening is a good, low-effort way to spend your acclimatisation day.

Keep the higher villages, Key Monastery and Chandratal as separate day trips rather than first-day activities.

Kaza market and local experience

The market sits in the town centre and is the main place for shopping and supplies in the whole valley.

It is busiest in the main travel season, roughly June to September. In winter, many shops reduce hours or close, and stock thins out.

You will find groceries, warm clothing and woollens, small handicrafts and souvenirs, basic travel essentials and, usually, a pharmacy. Carry cash, since card and UPI payments can be unreliable.

Some souvenirs sold here are made locally and some are brought in. Ask if local origin matters to you. When photographing shopkeepers or residents, ask first and respect a no.

Monastery and cultural sites within Kaza

Within the town area, Kaza has a branch gompa of the Sakya (Tangyud) tradition. It is modest compared with Spiti’s famous hilltop monasteries, which lie outside the town.

The valley’s best-known monastery, Key (Ki) Monastery, sits about 12 to 15 km away and is a day trip, not an in-town site. The historic Tangyud Gompa near Komik is also outside Kaza.

When visiting any monastery, remove your shoes before entering prayer halls, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, ask before photographing monks or rituals, and keep silence during prayers.

How many days are needed in Kaza?

Most travellers do well with two to three nights in Kaza. Here is how the options compare.

One night (transit): Only if you are passing through and already acclimatised. Not ideal, and risky if you plan to go higher next day.

Two nights: A gentle first day in town, then one nearby day trip. A sensible minimum for most people.

Three nights: A first acclimatisation day, then two day trips, with a buffer for weather or road delays. The most comfortable choice.

Longer slow-travel stay: For those who want to settle in, add village homestays and explore at an easy pace.

Every stay length benefits from treating day one as rest. Buffer days matter here because a single landslide or snow spell can hold a road for hours or longer.

Best time to visit Kaza

Spring (roughly April–May)

Cold nights, lingering snow, mud and road repair, limited services, and a gradual reopening. The Manali route is usually still closed.

Summer (roughly June–September)

The main season. Pleasant days, strong high-altitude sun, the fullest range of open services, busiest roads and highest accommodation demand. Best window for nearby excursions.

Monsoon (July–August)

Spiti itself is dry, sitting in a rain shadow, but the approach roads are not. The Kinnaur corridor is landslide-prone and delays are common. Do not treat Spiti as rain-free; the risk is on the way in.

Autumn (roughly late September–October)

Clear skies, cold nights, fewer crowds and lovely light, with early-snow risk and reducing services. Kunzum Pass access grows uncertain.

Kaza in winter (roughly November–March)

Extreme cold, heavy snow, and the Manali route closed. Access is usually only via the Shimla–Kinnaur route, and even that can be blocked by snow for days. Accommodation, food, transport and fuel are all limited, water can freeze, and medical access is harder. Winter travel here is for prepared, experienced travellers only, and self-driving without current road information is not advisable.

How to reach Kaza

There are two main road approaches, and they behave very differently by season.

Via Shimla and Kinnaur

This is the more reliable route and the usual default, especially outside high summer. It runs Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Reckong Peo → Nako → Tabo → Kaza.

It is a long journey of roughly 420 to 450 km from Shimla, usually done over two days with an overnight stop such as Kalpa or Sarahan. The altitude gain is gradual, which helps acclimatisation. HRTC buses connect Shimla to Reckong Peo and Reckong Peo to Kaza.

The main risks are landslides and rockfall in Kinnaur, worst during monsoon, especially around Maling Nala. NH-5 also carries 2025 monsoon repair work, so expect single-lane patches and holding delays. This route stays usable through much of the year, snow permitting.

Via Manali and Kunzum Pass

This route is shorter but seasonal, and depends entirely on Kunzum Pass being open. It runs Manali → Atal Tunnel → Gramphu → Batal → Kunzum Pass → Losar → Kaza, roughly 180 to 200 km, usually 7 to 10 hours in a single long day when conditions are good.

It typically opens only after BRO clears snow on Kunzum Pass, usually late May or early June, and closes again around mid to late October. The Gramphu–Batal stretch is rough with water crossings, and an SUV or 4×4 is strongly recommended. The Atal Tunnel being open does not mean this whole route is open; Kunzum Pass has its own status.

Do not plan a rushed single-day dash straight to higher altitudes on arrival; it compromises acclimatisation.

Local transport, parking and getting around

Kaza town is small and walkable, and most of what you need in town is within easy reach on foot.

For day trips, you will use taxis or shared taxis. A local taxi union operates here, so arrange vehicles and bike rentals early in the day, as availability is limited. HRTC and local buses serve some routes but run infrequently.

Parking is available in town but tight near the market. Streets can be narrow and congested in season, and winter adds snow and ice. Evening transport thins out, so plan day-trip returns before dark.

Kaza Altitude and acclimatisation

Kaza sits at about 3,650 m, high enough that altitude needs real respect. This is the most important part of planning a Kaza trip.

Give your body time to adjust. On your first day, keep activity light, rest, and drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol, heavy meals and hard exertion at first, and sleep well before going higher.

Rapid ascent is the main risk. The villages and passes near Kaza are considerably higher, so feeling well in town does not mean you are ready to rush up to Langza, Komic, Kibber or Kunzum Pass the same day. Gain height gradually.

Children and senior citizens may adjust differently and need extra care and a slower pace. Travellers with respiratory, cardiac or neurological conditions, and anyone pregnant, should seek professional medical advice before the trip.

If someone feels unwell, worsening symptoms are a signal to stop going higher and, if they continue, to descend to a lower elevation and seek medical help. Kaza’s Community Health Centre offers basic care, but serious cases may need evacuation, which takes time in this terrain. This is general guidance, not a diagnosis; please consult a doctor for your own situation.

Accommodation in Kaza

Kaza has the widest choice of stays in Spiti, though it is still a small mountain town. Think in categories rather than a fixed list.

You will find simple hotels, guesthouses, family homestays, a few hostels, budget rooms and a small number of more comfortable stays. Homestays are a good way to experience local life.

In the cold months, check heating, hot water and power backup carefully, as these vary a lot. Many properties reduce operations or close in winter, so book ahead and confirm the property is actually open for your dates. Ask about parking, meal availability and cancellation terms when booking.

Food and eating in Kaza

Kaza has the best food options in the valley, though still limited by big-town standards.

You will find simple Indian meals, Tibetan-influenced dishes such as thukpa and momos, and a handful of cafés and bakeries that are popular with travellers. Vegetarian food is widely available.

Many places open seasonally and close early, and winter options shrink considerably. Drink treated or bottled water, and tell staff clearly about any dietary needs or allergies. For children, plain rice, dal and warm dishes are usually easy to arrange.

Fuel, ATMs, medical care and mobile connectivity

Plan for a remote town where services exist but can be stretched. Carry a sensible backup.

Fuel: Kaza has a fuel station, historically the main one in this part of the valley. Availability can be limited, so fill up when you can and start day trips with a full tank. Do not carry or store fuel unsafely.

Cash and ATMs: ATMs are present but can run out of cash or be offline. Carry enough cash for your whole stay, drawn earlier at Reckong Peo, Shimla or Manali.

UPI and cards: Accepted in some places but unreliable. Do not depend on them.

Mobile and internet: BSNL and Airtel are generally the most usable; coverage is patchy and drops on day trips. Internet can be slow.

Electricity: Generally available in town but can be interrupted, especially in winter.

Medical: A Community Health Centre handles basic care. A pharmacy is usually available in the market. Serious cases may require evacuation.

Vehicle and tyre repair: Basic mechanics are available; do not assume specialist parts.

This is a place to plan ahead, not to panic. Most travellers manage well with cash, a full tank and modest expectations of connectivity.

Day trips from Kaza

Kaza works best as a base for a small number of well-chosen excursions. Do not try to see everything, and avoid stacking several very high places on your first day out.

Key (Ki) Monastery and Kibber

Why it works: Spiti’s iconic monastery plus a high village, close together. Distance: roughly 12 to 20 km. Time: a half to full day. Altitude: monastery around 4,166 m, Kibber above 4,200 m. Road: generally good. Suitability: most travellers once acclimatised.

Langza, Hikkim and Komic

Why it works: fossil village, world’s highest post office, and a very high village, on one loop. Distance: roughly 15 to 20 km each. Time: a full day. Altitude: 4,400 m and above. Road: mostly manageable. Suitability: better on day two or three, not immediately after arrival.

Tabo

Why it works: one of the oldest monasteries in the region, gentler altitude. Distance: about 47 km. Time: a half to full day. Altitude: lower than Kaza. Road: generally good. Suitability: good for those wanting culture over height.

For the full picture of these places, see the parent Spiti Valley guide rather than treating them as part of Kaza. For the full list of Spiti sights, see the attractions hub.

Accessibility and traveller suitability

Kaza suits many travellers but not everyone, mainly because of altitude and terrain.

Families can visit with a slow, careful pace, though very young children need extra caution at this height. Teenagers and fit adults usually adjust well. Senior citizens can manage with a gentle plan and medical caution. Solo travellers, couples and groups all find Kaza workable, and it is a common base for motorcycle and self-drive travellers.

Accessibility for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility is genuinely limited. Streets are uneven, there are steps, accommodation is rarely step-free, and cold, dust and altitude add strain. Rest opportunities and basic toilets exist but are simple.

Winter travellers should have real cold-weather experience and current road information.

What to pack for Kaza

Pack for cold nights and strong sun even in summer.

Layered clothing, a warm jacket and thermals

Sun protection: sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, cap

Moisturiser for dry high-altitude air

Reusable water bottle

Personal medicines and a basic first-aid kit

Enough cash for the whole trip

Power bank and offline maps

Copies of your ID (and passport for foreign nationals)

Winter footwear and warm gear in colder months

Rain protection for the approach routes

For self-drive: vehicle spares, a good spare tyre, and enough fuel to reach Kaza

Do not take prescription altitude medicine without a doctor’s advice.

Photography, drones and local etiquette

Kaza and its surroundings are wonderful for landscape photography, and the mountain light rewards early starts.

Ask permission before photographing residents, monks or ceremonies, and accept a no gracefully. Do not photograph inside prayer halls unless clearly allowed, and never during worship.

This is a border-sensitive region. Do not assume drones are permitted; check current rules and restrictions before flying. Never photograph police, military or security installations. Avoid stopping unsafely on narrow roads for photos, and respect private homes and fields.

Responsible visiting guidance

Kaza is a small community in a fragile high-altitude environment, and water, power and supplies are limited.

Use water sparingly, reduce waste, avoid single-use plastic and carry your rubbish out. Support local businesses that operate responsibly, and respect monasteries and religious sites.

Park in designated spots and do not block narrow roads. Be mindful of winter resource limits, and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on local medical or emergency services. Follow all permit and border-area rules.

Suggested Kaza sightseeing combinations

A few realistic ways to shape your time, each with a backup in mind.

Acclimatisation first day

Start late, stay in town, walk the market and riverside, rest often. Transport: on foot. Walking: light. Best for: everyone on arrival. Backup: simply rest more if you feel unwell.

Kaza town half-day

Market, Old Kaza, a café and the in-town gompa. Duration: 3 to 4 hours. Transport: on foot. Best for: those short on time. Backup: shift to a full rest day if tired.

One nearby day trip

Key Monastery and Kibber, starting mid-morning. Duration: a half to full day. Transport: taxi. Altitude: above 4,000 m. Best for: acclimatised travellers on day two. Backup: return early if weather turns.

Two-night base

A gentle first day, then one day trip. Best for: most travellers. Backup: keep the second day flexible for road delays.

Winter Kaza stay

In-town only, minimal movement, warm stays. Transport: on foot. Best for: prepared winter travellers. Backup: buffer days for snow closures.

This is not a full Spiti itinerary; it is a way to structure your Kaza days.

How to add Kaza to a HimTrails trip

Kaza is the natural hub of almost any Spiti plan. Most itineraries use it for two to three nights, both for acclimatisation and as the launch point for day trips.

Travellers who are new to high altitude, travelling with children or seniors, or visiting in shoulder seasons usually benefit from an extra night here. HimTrails can build your nearby excursions around a comfortable Kaza base, matched to your pace and the season.

To help us plan well, please share your travel dates, number of travellers and ages of any children, your starting city, preferred route, vehicle preference, available trip length, accommodation preference, any mobility or medical/altitude concerns, your winter-travel experience, the places you want to combine, and your package type.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Where is Kaza?

          <line x1="6" y1="1" x2="6" y2="11"></line><line x1="1" y1="6" x2="11" y2="6"></line>

Kaza is in Spiti Valley, in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, in the north Indian Himalayas.
