Its name means “fort on a cliff”, and the setting explains why: the old gompa looks straight down onto the confluence of the Pin and Spiti rivers.

This was once the seat of Spiti’s early rulers and remains an active Gelug (Yellow Hat) site. Because the old structure is fragile earthen and timber work, access to some rooms may be limited, so treat it as a living sacred place rather than a museum.

Above the village, a separate uphill hike leads to Dhankar Lake at around 4,140 m. It is short in distance but demanding at altitude, and it is easy to underestimate. The single most important thing to plan for here is that fragility and thin air, not the map distance.

Quick Answer

Dhankar Monastery is a cliffside Gelug Buddhist monastery above Dhankar Village in Spiti Valley, historically the capital of the Spiti kingdom. Travellers come for its dramatic setting over the Pin and Spiti rivers, its old murals and Vairochana statue, and the views. Allow about 45 to 90 minutes for the monastery, and roughly 2 to 4 hours more if you add the steep Dhankar Lake hike above the village.

<div style="height:25px" aria-hidden="true" In plain terms, it is a cluster of small earthen and timber temple rooms, courtyards and shrines that seem to grow out of the cliff itself.

It sits in the lower-middle part of Spiti Valley, between the towns of Kaza and Tabo. For centuries it served both religious and administrative roles, which is unusual for a monastery.

The visit and the lake hike are two different things. The monastery is a short walk from parking. Dhankar Lake is a separate, steeper climb above the village that many visitors skip. Treat the gompa as an active place of worship first and a sightseeing stop second.

Dhankar Monastery History

The recorded history is layered rather than a single date. Scholarly work (drawing on early surveys by A. H. Francke) links the monastery to a lama known locally as Lha-‘od, believed born around 1121, described as its founder or renovator, with structural features dating to roughly the 12th century.

Some popular accounts push the origin earlier, to the 7th, 9th or 11th century. These are not well supported by scholarship, and monks themselves reportedly could show no verifiably ancient relics, explaining that the site was plundered several times. So it is fair to call Dhankar roughly a thousand years old, but not to fix one confident founding century.

What is better supported is Dhankar’s role as the traditional capital of the Spiti kingdom in the 17th century, and the seat of the local rulers known as the Nono. The nearby fort, now in ruins, gave the place its “fort on a cliff” name.

Today it belongs to the Gelug (Yellow Hat) school. In earlier periods, sources say the monastery’s affiliation shifted with the ruling family, through Nyingma, Sakya and Kagyu traditions, before settling into the Gelug order. Worship has continued here into the present.

Old and New Dhankar Monastery

There are effectively two monasteries at Dhankar, and it helps to know the difference before you arrive.

Old monastery

New monastery

Location

On the cliff spur above the village

At Shichilling, below, near the road

Age / character

The historic gompa, fragile earthen structure

A newer complex; a Teaching Temple was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 2009

Main use

Heritage rooms, older art, a small museum

Day-to-day residence and worship for the monk community

What you may see

Old murals, the Vairochana statue, shrine rooms

Active prayer halls and monastic life

Access note

Some rooms may be closed for safety or worship

Generally more accessible

The older cliff gompa holds the more historic art and the small museum. The newer complex at Shichilling is where much of the living religious activity happens.

Not every room is open, and that is normal. If a section is closed off, it is usually for structural safety or because it is in religious use. Please do not try to enter closed or roped-off areas.

Architecture and Cliffside Setting

The old gompa is built mainly of mud, stone and timber, in compact rooms linked by narrow passages and small courtyards. The whole thing clings to a spur reported to rise around 300 m above the river confluence.

From safe public points, the views open onto the meeting of the Pin and Spiti rivers and the surrounding brown canyon walls. It is one of the more dramatic monastery settings in the Himalayas.

The same fragility that makes it special makes it delicate. Please stay on the marked paths and public terraces, and do not climb walls, roofs or the loose cliff edges for a photo. An unofficial viewpoint is not a safe viewpoint.

Sacred Art, Statues and Monastic Interiors

The best-known object here is a statue of Vairochana (the meditating Buddha), described as four figures seated back to back. The old gompa also holds murals, aged thangkas, and Buddhist scriptures, with a small museum of religious items.

These are sacred objects, not exhibits. Lighting inside is dim, partly to protect the art. Please do not touch murals, statues or ritual items, as skin oils and contact damage fragile surfaces.

Photography of interiors is frequently restricted. Where it is allowed at all, flash usually is not. When in doubt, ask before you raise a camera or phone.

Dhankar Monastery Timings, Entry Fee and Visit Duration

Timings

Most sources report the monastery open 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, though at least one lists 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Individual rooms and the museum may open on a narrower window, and access can pause during prayers or rituals.

Entry

Reports vary between free entry, a small donation of around ₹20 to ₹50, and higher figures on some sites. Treat it as a modest donation toward upkeep rather than a fixed ticket, and carry small cash.

Camera or video fee

Not consistently reported. Ask at the monastery.

Visit duration

Most travellers spend about 45 to 90 minutes at the monastery, longer if you sit for prayers or visit the museum.

Access may be reduced during festivals, rituals or conservation work, so allow some flexibility.

Photography Rules

Situation

Typical position

What to do

Exterior of the gompa

Usually allowed

Photograph freely, respectfully

Interior shrine rooms

Often restricted

Ask staff first

Flash

Usually not allowed inside

Keep it off

Video / tripods

Often restricted

Ask first

Drones

Assume not allowed without permission

Get explicit permission

During prayers

Sensitive

Avoid unless clearly permitted

Monks or worshippers

Needs consent

Ask each person first

Rules can differ between the old and new complexes, and they can change. If you cannot confirm a rule, do not photograph. Please never take covert photos inside.

Dress Code, Footwear and Monastery Etiquette

Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. You will usually be asked to remove footwear before entering shrine rooms, so easy-to-remove shoes help.

Keep your voice low, silence your phone, and if you walk around a shrine or stupa, follow the clockwise direction where that is the local practice. Do not touch statues, murals or ritual objects.

Food, smoking and alcohol are not appropriate inside the complex. A donation is welcome but not a demand. Please keep children close and supervised, and give monks and worshippers space during prayers. Some of these are firm rules and some are simply respectful practice; when unsure, follow the lead of monastery staff.

Best Time to Visit Dhankar Monastery

The main season is roughly June to September or October, when the Spiti roads are more reliably open. Winter access is difficult and often not possible, with heavy snow and very cold conditions.

For the visit itself, morning is usually best, for softer light on the exterior and cooler walking if you plan to add the lake hike. Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends in peak season.

Weather changes fast at this altitude, and road conditions vary year to year, so keep your plans flexible and confirm access close to your travel date.

How to Reach Dhankar Monastery

Dhankar sits above Dhankar Village, off the main Kaza–Tabo road. A branch road (reported at about 8 km) climbs from the highway up to Dhankar; it is motorable but better suited to smaller vehicles.

Dhankar Monastery distance from Kaza is commonly given as around 32 to 34 km by road, roughly a 1 to 1.5 hour drive depending on conditions. From Tabo, it is a similar order of distance on the other side. Pin Valley branches off the same lower-Spiti stretch, so Dhankar combines naturally with a Pin Valley leg.

Most travellers arrive by private car, taxi or motorcycle, usually as a day stop or overnight from Kaza or Tabo. Shared public transport into Dhankar is limited and infrequent, so do not rely on it for tight schedules. For the wider approach to Spiti from Shimla or Manali, see the Spiti Valley travel guide.

Parking and Walking Access

Vehicles usually stop near the new monastery at Shichilling, where parking is informal and limited. Please do not block the narrow village lanes.

From there it is a short uphill walk to the old gompa, over uneven ground with some steps and gradients, and with cliff exposure in places. Children should be held close and supervised.

For senior citizens, the monastery walk is often manageable at a slow pace, but it is not wheelchair-accessible, and there is little formal seating. The Dhankar Lake trailhead also starts from this area, which is a much harder proposition (covered below).

Dhankar Lake

Dhankar Lake is a small high-altitude lake sitting above Dhankar Village at around 4,140 m (13,580 ft). It lies in a bowl among barren, rocky slopes, reached only on foot from the village.

It is quiet and often nearly empty, which is part of its appeal. Water levels can vary through the season, so do not expect a full, mirror-calm lake on every visit; old photographs are not a promise of current conditions.

The lake carries local cultural and spiritual associations and sits in a fragile environment. It is not a swimming or picnic spot. Please do not enter or bathe in the water, do not camp without permission, and do not fly a drone without confirmed local permission. Carry all your waste back down.

Dhankar Lake Hike: Distance, Time and Difficulty

The Dhankar Lake hike starts near the new monastery car park, where a signboard usually marks the path. There is essentially one route up, so it is hard to get seriously lost, and the same path brings you back down.

Detail

Figure

Note

Starting point

Near the new monastery / village

Signboard marks the trail

One-way distance

About 1.5 to 5 km

Direct hill route is shorter and steeper; graded path is longer. At nearly 4,000 m and above, a short climb feels much harder than the same distance at low elevation, because there is less oxygen and the sun and wind are strong. When sources disagree on distance, it is largely because there are two lines up the hill; plan for the effort, not the number.

Is the Dhankar Lake Hike Suitable for You?

Traveller

General guidance

Fit, acclimatised adults

Usually fine at a steady pace

First-time hikers

Doable if acclimatised and unhurried

Families with older children

Possible with care and slow pacing

Young children

Only with close supervision and honest judgement of the child

Senior citizens

Depends on fitness and altitude tolerance

Limited mobility

Not suitable

Pregnant travellers

Discuss with a doctor beforehand; altitude adds risk

Heart, lung or altitude-sensitive travellers

Caution; seek medical advice, be ready to turn back

Solo travellers

Avoid in poor weather; tell someone your plan

Photographers

Rewarding, but respect the environment

Short on time

Skip the hike and enjoy the monastery

The limiting factors are steepness, altitude, sun exposure and the lack of facilities, not the length. It is completely fine to visit the monastery and skip the lake.

Dhankar Lake Hiking Safety

Start early, and check the weather and trail conditions before you set off. Carry more water than you think you need, plus sun protection, sunglasses and layers, as it can be hot in the sun and cold in the wind.

Wear shoes with good grip, stay on the main path, and keep well back from loose edges. Keep children within arm’s reach on the exposed sections.

Walk at a steady, unhurried pace and rest when you need to. If the weather turns, if the trail is snowy or muddy after recent snowfall or rain, or if anyone feels unwell, turn back. Recognise altitude symptoms such as bad headache, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness at rest, and descend if they appear. Carry any personal medication, and carry all your waste back out. This is not a completely safe trail, and it is fine to turn around.

What to Wear and Carry

For the monastery

Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and easy-to-remove footwear for shrine rooms. Small cash for a donation.

For the Dhankar Lake hike

Walking shoes with grip, layered clothing, a windproof or waterproof layer, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, plenty of drinking water, some snacks, personal medication, a power bank and a reusable bag for your waste. Everything on this list earns its place; the hike has no shops, taps or shade.

Altitude, Acclimatisation and Health

Dhankar Village and the monastery sit at about 3,894 m, and the lake at about 4,140 m. Even the short climb crosses the 4,000 m mark, where oxygen is noticeably lower.

Acclimatise before you push uphill, ideally with a night or two already spent at Spiti altitudes such as Kaza or Tabo. Drink plenty of water, avoid overexertion, and respect the strong sun and wind.

Children, senior citizens, pregnant travellers, and anyone with heart, lung or altitude-related conditions should be especially careful, and may prefer to skip the hike. Watch for warning signs such as a severe headache, vomiting, confusion or breathlessness at rest; if they appear, descend and seek medical help. A short hike does not remove altitude risk, and days already spent in Kaza do not guarantee protection. This is general guidance, not personalised medical advice.

Accessibility and Traveller Suitability

The monastery and the lake hike are not the same in terms of access, so treat them separately.

The monastery involves village walking, uneven ground, thresholds and steps, and some cliff exposure. It suits most families, couples, solo travellers, cultural travellers and pilgrims who can manage a short uphill walk, but it is not wheelchair-accessible, and seating is limited.

The lake hike is a genuine high-altitude climb and suits fit, acclimatised hikers rather than everyone. Toilets, water and medical support are effectively absent on the trail, and weather exposure is real. Choose based on honest fitness, altitude comfort and the day’s conditions.

Facilities Near Dhankar Monastery

Facility

At the monastery

In Dhankar Village

On the lake trail / at the lake

In Kaza or Tabo

Toilets

Very limited

Some

None reliable

Yes

Drinking water

Limited

Some

Carry your own

Yes

Food / cafés

Minimal

A few small options

None

Good

Homestays / guesthouses

No

Yes, a few

No

Yes

Shops

No

Very few

No

Yes

Mobile network

Patchy (BSNL best)

Patchy

Often none

Better

Digital payments

Unreliable

Unreliable

None

Limited

Cash

Needed

Needed

Needed

ATMs in Kaza

Fuel / repair

No

No

No

Kaza

Medical / emergency

No

Very limited

None

Basic in Kaza

Please do not assume food, water or toilets exist on the hike. Not every traveller should do both.

How to Add Dhankar to a HimTrails Spiti Trip

Dhankar fits most Spiti circuits that run the Kaza–Tabo stretch. As a short stop, the monastery slots neatly into a driving day. As a half-day or overnight, it opens up the Dhankar Lake hike for those who want it.

Cultural travellers and pilgrims may prioritise the monastery; hikers and photographers may want the lake as well; families and senior travellers often prefer the monastery alone. HimTrails can help with transport, vetted homestays, local timing and route sequencing so the visit sits sensibly in your wider Spiti plan. Because access and trail conditions change, reconfirm them close to your dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Dhankar Monastery?

          <line x1="6" y1="1" x2="6" y2="11"></line><line x1="1" y1="6" x2="11" y2="6"></line>

Dhankar Monastery is in Dhankar Village in Spiti Valley, in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.
