It is the single major pass on this route, which is why so much depends on whether it is clear of snow.

For most travellers, Shinkula Pass is not a sightseeing destination in the usual sense. It is a crossing point on a remote road, best treated as a short, careful stop where road condition, weather and altitude matter far more than photographs.

It has become popular with motorcycle riders and self-drive travellers heading from the Manali side towards Padum and Zanskar. If you are planning that kind of trip, the most important thing to check is the current road status, because the pass is seasonal and closes under snow for much of the year.

Quick answer

Shinkula Pass, also spelled Shinku La or Shingo La, is a high pass at roughly 16,580 feet on the Darcha–Padum road, connecting Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh with Zanskar in Ladakh. It usually becomes accessible only after BRO snow clearance, generally between April and May, and closes under snow in winter. Always check current road status before you go.

    Latest destination forecast

Shinkula Pass Live Weather, Forecast & Travel Essentials

Latest model-based mountain forecast and practical location details for planning your visit.

    Measurement units
    °C
    °F

At a glance

Location details for this destination

पर्यटक स्थल

Shinkula Pass

District

Lahaul and Spiti

State

Himachal Pradesh

Elevation

5,091 mApproximate ground elevation supplied to the forecast model

Place type

Mountain pass

Time zone

Asia/Kolkata

Local time

गुरु, 24 सितम्बर, 2:56 अपराह्न

Updating the latest forecast…

On the ground

Seasonal weather

Suitable for

Live weather requires JavaScript. It sits where the Lahaul side of Himachal Pradesh meets the Zanskar side of Ladakh, so crossing it takes you from one region into the other.

Its main role is connectivity. For a long time, Zanskar was one of the most cut-off valleys in India. This road gave it a direct motorable link towards Himachal, cutting a journey that once took days down to hours in the open season.

The pass draws road-trip and motorcycle travellers because it is the only high pass on this particular route, and the landscape around it is stark, open and quiet compared with busier passes.

It remains seasonal infrastructure rather than a developed tourist spot. There are no shops or facilities at the top to speak of, and it is closed under snow for a large part of the year.

It is also important to separate two things. The existing Shinkula Pass road runs over the top of the pass. The Shinkula Tunnel is a separate project being built to bypass the pass in future. They are not the same, and the tunnel is not open.

Why is Shinkula Pass important?

Shinkula Pass matters mostly because of what it connects. It links Lahaul with Zanskar on a route that is being developed as an alternative axis towards Ladakh, alongside the older Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways.

For local communities in Zanskar, this road is a lifeline during the months it stays open. For travellers, it offers a quieter, more remote route than the main highways.

Riders and self-drive travellers are drawn to it because the road crosses only one big pass rather than several, which some find simpler to plan around, even though the terrain is still demanding.

The landscape is a large part of the appeal. Open snowfields, bare high-altitude slopes and the descent past Gonbo Rangjon towards Zanskar give the route a strong sense of remoteness.

Its importance is also tied to the future. Once the Shinkula Tunnel is complete, this corridor is intended to become all-weather, which would change winter access to Zanskar significantly. That day has not arrived yet.

Shinkula Pass altitude and geography

The Shinkula Pass altitude is commonly given as around 16,580 feet, though you will see different figures in different places. Some sources list about 16,703 feet (5,091 m), and one official sign has been reported at 16,615.5 ft.

The honest position is that the exact figure varies by source, so it is best treated as approximate rather than fixed. Either way, it is one of the higher motorable passes in the region.

The pass lies in the Greater Himalaya, on the divide between Lahaul and Zanskar. On the southern (Lahaul) side, the road climbs from Darcha through Rarig and Chikka. On the northern (Zanskar) side, it descends along a stream past the Gonbo Rangjon peak towards Kargyak and eventually Padum.

The surroundings are high, open and exposed, with snowfields lingering into summer and a small shallow pool below the summit on the southern side.

Because of the altitude, weather here is extreme and changeable, and oxygen levels are low. This is central to how you should plan your time at the top.

Note that the pass altitude and the planned tunnel altitude are different. The tunnel is being built lower, at around 15,800 feet, beneath the pass.

History and route development

Shinkula, as a crossing, was traditionally used on a long-distance footpath linking Zanskar and Lahaul, walked by locals and trekkers over several days.

The modern motorable road is a much more recent development. The Border Roads Organisation built out the Darcha-side road towards the pass, and the wider Nimmu–Padum–Darcha corridor was steadily connected over the following years.

The route is being developed as a third road axis towards Ladakh, in addition to the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways. Its appeal is that it crosses only one major pass.

Over recent years, BRO has continued to improve and blacktop sections of the road, and it now carries heavier traffic during the open season than it once did.

The next stage of development is the Shinkula Tunnel, which is intended to remove the seasonal closure at the pass itself. That project is covered in the next section.

Shinkula Tunnel project

The Shinkula Tunnel (project spelling generally Shinkun La Tunnel, also referred to as Shingo La Tunnel) is a separate infrastructure project from the existing pass road. It is worth understanding clearly, because the two are often confused.

What it is

A planned motorable tunnel beneath Shinkula Pass on the Nimmu–Padum–Darcha road, being built by the Border Roads Organisation under Project Yojak.

Why it is being built

To provide all-weather connectivity towards Ladakh and remove the long winter closure at the pass. It is described as strategically important for reaching border areas year-round.

Key project facts

Length is cited at around 4.1 km (some sources say 4.25 km), planned at roughly 15,800 feet. The Union Cabinet approved the project in February 2023. A foundation blast was carried out in July 2024, and major construction is reported to have advanced from May 2025.

Current stage

The tunnel is under construction. Based on available sources, it has not broken through, is not under public testing, and is not commissioned or open to traffic. A completion target of around August 2028 has been reported, though timelines on this project have shifted before.

What this means for your trip

Right now, you still cross the open pass. The tunnel does not yet offer an alternative, and there is no all-weather route today. Construction work may affect the corridor, so follow BRO signage and any traffic-control instructions, and do not enter work zones.

Shinkula Pass opening and closing

Shinkula Pass does not have one fixed opening or closing date each year. It depends on snowfall, snow clearance and administrative decisions.

Is it open right now?

Check a current advisory. Our last recorded status was the summer window, but that is not a same-day guarantee.

Typical opening: BRO snow clearance usually opens the road somewhere between early April and mid-May, depending on the year. In some recent years, it opened in early to mid-April for limited 4×4 movement, then more widely by May.

Typical closure: The pass generally closes under heavy snow from around October, and is usually snowbound through April.

Why dates vary: A road being technically cleared by BRO does not automatically mean it is open to tourists. District administrations decide when and how civilian and tourist traffic is allowed. Fresh snowfall can also re-block a cleared road within hours.

Because of all this, treat historical patterns as a rough guide only, and rely on current status for your actual travel dates.

Shinkula Pass timings, fee and permit

Movement hours

This is an open mountain road, not a ticketed site, so it does not have fixed “opening hours.” However, authorities may restrict movement to daylight or specific windows, and one-way or alternate-day traffic has been used in some periods. Confirm current rules.

Entry fee / toll / green tax

No specific entry fee for the pass was found in research. Confirm any tolls or charges before travelling.

Permit

No special pass-permit for Indian nationals on this route was found in research. Foreign nationals should confirm any permit or checkpoint requirements for the wider Ladakh region separately, as these can differ.

Documents

Carry your identity documents and full vehicle papers (registration, insurance, valid licence, pollution certificate). There is a border security checkpoint at Darcha.

How to reach Shinkula Pass from Manali

The usual approach is Manali → Atal Tunnel → Sissu → Keylong → Jispa → Darcha, then the turn-off towards the pass.

From Manali to Darcha is roughly 140 km via the Atal Tunnel, and this stretch is generally the reliable part of the journey in season.

At Darcha, the road to Zanskar branches off towards Chikka and climbs steeply towards Shinkula.

The road surface is mixed, with blacktopped sections and rougher, looser stretches higher up. Fuel planning matters: fill up before you leave the Keylong/Tandi area, as there is no dependable fuel until Padum.

For altitude reasons, avoid rushing from Manali straight over the pass in a single push if you can help it. An overnight stop lower down, such as at Jispa, gives your body more time to adjust. It does not guarantee acclimatisation, but it helps.

Confirm current restrictions before you go, including any 4×4 or chain advisories near the pass.

How to reach Shinkula Pass from Darcha

Darcha is the practical base for the pass. From Darcha to Shinkula Pass is roughly 40 km, and this is where the real climb begins.

Approximate travel time varies with road condition and traffic, so treat any single figure as a rough estimate rather than a guarantee.

The road climbs steeply, with a mix of surfaces, gravel sections and water crossings fed by snowmelt. These streams tend to swell as the day warms up, so it is wise to cross major water sections before noon.

You may encounter snow patches, construction activity and BRO traffic even in season. Mobile signal usually disappears once you leave Darcha, so download offline maps and carry cash.

For motorcyclists, this leg is manageable for prepared, experienced riders, but demands care on gravel, slush and water. An early start is best, so you can reach the pass and get back down to a lower altitude with daylight to spare.

Shinkula Pass to Padum and Zanskar

Once you cross the pass, the road descends into Zanskar, passing landmarks such as Gonbo Rangjon and settlements including Kargyak and Purne before reaching Padum.

From the pass to Padum is roughly 90 to 110 km depending on the source, so confirm before planning tightly.

The Zanskar-side road is often dusty and loose, and braking hard on it can cause a slide. Fuel and food are limited, so carry enough of both. Public transport is sparse and should not be assumed.

Access is seasonal and weather-dependent, just like the pass itself. Travel times vary a great deal, so build in buffer time.

This section is only an overview. For full end-to-end planning of the Darcha–Padum journey, a dedicated route guide is the right place, and HimTrails can help you plan it.

Shinkula Pass motorcycle guide

Riding to Shinkula Pass is a rewarding but demanding ride, and preparation matters more than the badge on your tank.

Documents

Carry your licence, registration, insurance and pollution certificate. There is a checkpoint at Darcha.

Bike condition

Check tyres, brakes, clutch, chain, battery and engine oil before you leave. A well-maintained bike matters far more than engine size.

Fuel

Plan for no dependable fuel between Tandi (near Keylong) and Padum, a long gap over hard mountain riding. Many riders carry a jerry can, stored safely.

Spares and tools

Carry puncture repair, spare tubes or tubeless kit, a pump, basic tools, spare cables, fuses and chain lube.

Conditions to expect

Water crossings, loose gravel, possible snow and ice, and strong crosswinds near the top. Ride within your limits and be ready to turn back.

Comfort and safety

Dress for cold even in summer. Manage fatigue, ride in a group where possible, and think carefully before carrying a pillion on this terrain.

At altitude

Your bike may start harder and feel less powerful. Keep your own time at the pass short.

This is guidance for the pass itself, not a full multi-day itinerary. For the complete ride plan, see a dedicated route or bike-expedition resource.

Rental-bike and document rules

If you are hiring a motorcycle, the rules can vary, so it helps to separate what is what.

Private motorcycles

Carry registration, insurance, a valid licence and pollution certificate.

Rental bikes

Read your rental agreement carefully. Some rental companies restrict which routes their bikes may be taken on, and one-way rentals and breakdown recovery can have their own terms and charges.

Important distinction

Rental-company policies and local association practices are not the same as government law or police requirements. A restriction from a hire company is a contractual rule, not necessarily a legal one, and vice versa.

Foreign nationals

Confirm documentation and any permit requirements for the wider region separately.

Road condition and vehicle suitability

The road is a mix of paved and unpaved sections. Expect loose gravel, water crossings from snowmelt, mud, and possibly snow, ice or black ice near the top, especially early and late in the season.

There are narrow stretches, so ground clearance helps. 4×4 has been advised near the pass in 2026, particularly early season and after fresh snow, and anti-skid chains have been recommended at times.

Motorcycles and prepared high-clearance vehicles are the typical choices. Scooters and low-clearance small cars are poorly suited to this terrain. Buses and regular commercial vehicles are not a reliable option here, and electric vehicles face serious charging limitations with no infrastructure en route.

Historical conditions are not a guarantee of what you will meet on the day. Do not assume any vehicle will get across; confirm the current advisory and vehicle rules first.

Fuel, food and breakdown planning

Fuel

The last dependable fuel from the Lahaul side is around Tandi, near Keylong. From there to Padum there is no reliable fuel, a gap of well over 100 km of mountain driving that burns fuel faster than a highway. Plan conservatively, and if you carry extra fuel, store it safely.

Food and water

Any dhabas or tents along the way are seasonal and informal. Carry your own food, water and cash, since card and UPI will not work up here.

Repairs and recovery

Do not count on mechanics, tyre repair or recovery services near the pass. Carry basic spares and know that help can be hours away.

Communication and emergencies

Expect no mobile signal beyond Darcha. Tell someone your plan, and keep a margin of daylight and fuel for the unexpected.

These are precautions, not reasons to panic. Prepared travellers cross this route routinely in season.

Parking, stopping and photography

There is no formal parking area at Shinkula Pass. Stop only where it is safe and off the traffic lane, never on blind corners or narrow sections.

Keep the road clear for BRO vehicles, trucks and other travellers, and do not treat the pass as a parking spot.

For photographs, step to a safe, stable position away from traffic and away from construction zones and snow-clearing areas. Avoid climbing on unstable snowbanks.

Wind can be strong at the top, and cold drains camera and phone batteries quickly, so keep spares warm. Do not stop in the traffic lane for a photo, and do not ask others to.

Best time to visit Shinkula Pass

The pass is only accessible in its open season, broadly summer into early autumn, and the exact window shifts each year with snow clearance.

Time of day

Morning is best. Aim to cross water sections before they swell in the afternoon, and plan to be back at a lower altitude before dark.

Summer (roughly June to September)

The main crossing season, with the most reliable access, though water crossings, loose roads and sudden weather still apply.

मानसून

Lahaul and Zanskar are relatively dry, but this does not mean the route is rain-free. Approach roads can be hit by landslides, rockfall and washouts, so watch local advisories.

पतझड़

Often clear, but with cold mornings, shorter daylight, frozen water crossings and the risk of early snow closing the pass suddenly.

None of this is guaranteed. Skies, snow and access all vary, so confirm current conditions.

Altitude and traveller suitability

At around 16,580 feet, Shinkula Pass affects everyone differently, and rapid ascent from Manali or Darcha gives your body little time to adjust.

Who should take extra care

Children, senior citizens, pregnant travellers, and anyone with respiratory, cardiac or neurological conditions should seek medical advice before a high-altitude trip like this. It is not suitable for everyone.

Practical steps

Break the climb with an overnight stop lower down where you can, keep your time at the pass short, stay hydrated, protect against cold, wind and strong sun, and limit hard exertion at the top.

Warning signs

If you or anyone in your group develops symptoms such as a persistent bad headache, breathlessness at rest, repeated vomiting, confusion or unsteadiness, do not continue climbing. Descend and seek medical help. This is general guidance, not a diagnosis.

Medical help and evacuation are very limited here, which is a strong reason to plan conservatively and turn back if needed.

This section touches on health and altitude illness, which is a serious topic. For personal medical concerns, please consult a doctor before travelling.

Facilities near Shinkula Pass

Do not expect routine facilities at the pass itself. Anything you find is seasonal and basic.

Toilets: No reliable facilities at the top.

Food and water: Only seasonal, informal tents at best. Carry your own.

Fuel: None between Tandi and Padum.

Shelter and accommodation: Nearest realistic stays are on the Darcha/Jispa side or towards Padum, not at the pass.

Mobile signal: Expect none beyond Darcha.

Medical, repair and recovery: Very limited to none nearby.

Plan as though there is nothing at the pass, because in practice there is very little.

Photography and drone guidance

Roadside photography is fine when done safely, well off the traffic lane and away from blind corners.

Keep clear of construction zones and any restricted or work areas, and avoid posing on unstable snowbanks.

Drones should not be assumed to be permitted. This is a sensitive border-region corridor with active defence infrastructure work, so confirm rules before flying, and treat any construction or security-related restriction seriously.

Cold drains batteries fast and wind can be strong, so keep spares warm and mind your footing. Avoid damaging the fragile high-altitude ground.

Nearby attractions and route landmarks

These combine naturally with a Shinkula Pass visit. Verify distances and access before planning.

Darcha (Lahaul side)

The practical base and turn-off for the pass, on the Manali–Leh road. Best for fuel-up, rest and a start point.

Jispa (Lahaul side)

A short way before Darcha, useful for an overnight stop that aids acclimatisation.

Keylong (Lahaul side)

The main town of Lahaul, with more services, on the way in.

Gonbo Rangjon (Zanskar side)

A striking sacred peak on the descent towards Zanskar, a natural landmark to pause near safely.

Padum (Zanskar side)

The main town of Zanskar and the far end of this route.

Atal Tunnel (approach)

On the way from Manali, it bypasses Rohtang and speeds up the early part of the drive.

For the full list of Lahaul and Spiti sights, see the attractions hub.

Suggested route combinations

Darcha to Shinkula Pass and back

A there-and-return day for those based around Darcha or Jispa. Start early, carry fuel and food, keep the stop at the top short, and return before dark. Best with a capable vehicle.

Shinkula Pass on a Darcha to Padum transfer

Cross the pass as part of the onward journey into Zanskar. Plan fuel from Tandi, meals and toilets in advance, and build in buffer time for road conditions.

Motorcycle route stop

A prepared, experienced rider pauses briefly at the pass during a Lahaul-to-Zanskar ride. Prioritise daylight, fuel and a backup plan.

Short pass visit when conditions permit

Only when road and construction conditions allow, kept deliberately short due to altitude.

For each of these, order your day around an early start, fuel from Tandi, limited food and toilets, altitude caution, road dependency and a return-before-dark plan. This is not a full Manali-to-Padum itinerary; it is how the pass fits into one.

Responsible visiting and riding guidance

Follow BRO, police and district-administration instructions at all times.

Keep the road clear and never block traffic for a photo.

Do not enter construction zones or restricted areas, and respect blasting or work closures.

Carry all your waste back with you and do not litter.

Avoid damaging snowbanks and the fragile high-altitude ground.

Keep horn use down and drive courteously with local drivers and workers.

Never ride or drive through an official closure.

Use safe stopping places only, and avoid fuel spills.

Do not disturb wildlife, and use limited water sparingly.

Skip stunts and risky riding; this is a working mountain road, not a track.

How to add Shinkula Pass to a HimTrails trip

Shinkula Pass fits best inside a Lahaul-to-Zanskar or Manali-to-Zanskar style journey, either as a route crossing on the way to Padum or as a dedicated high-altitude excursion from a Darcha or Jispa base.

It suits travellers comfortable with remote roads and altitude, and vehicle choice matters a great deal. Construction activity and day-to-day road status also shape what is realistic, which is exactly where local help is useful.

HimTrails can help you plan around current road conditions, pick a suitable vehicle, and build sensible acclimatisation into the route.
