Really busy. But it is also one of the best times to visit if you know what to expect and what to skip.

The weather in Manali town in May is genuinely comfortable — warm days, cool nights, and none of the bone-deep cold that makes winter trips tough for most people. Snow is not something you will see falling in town, but the higher points near Manali still have it, and that is where most travellers head.

The catch is that May is peak season. Hotels fill up fast, prices go up, and the roads to popular spots like Solang and the Rohtang side get genuinely congested on weekends.

If you plan early and set the right expectations, May is a fantastic month. If you show up hoping for empty roads and snow in the town square, you will be disappointed.

Quick Answer: Is Manali Good in May?

Yes. Manali in May is one of the most popular times to visit, and for good reason. The weather is pleasant, most sightseeing spots are open, and higher areas may still have snow depending on the year. Manali town itself rarely gets snowfall in May — for that, you need to go higher. Crowds and hotel prices are at their peak, so booking in advance matters.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Manali?

For most people coming from the plains — Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur — May in Manali feels like a completely different world. Temperatures that hover around 24°C during the day and drop to 8.5°C at night are a relief after the heat building up below 2,000 metres.

Families love May because sightseeing is comfortable and all the main spots are fully open. Couples find it romantic, especially in Old Manali and the upper ridges. First-time visitors to a hill station do very well in May because the conditions are forgiving.

Who does not enjoy May? Anyone who hates traffic and noise. Mall Road on a May weekend looks more like Connaught Place than a mountain town. If peace and quiet is the goal, go in September or early June instead.

In our experience running trips here for years, the people who enjoy May most are the ones who book in advance, start sightseeing early in the morning, and do not try to squeeze too many things into one day.

How is Manali Weather in May?

Manali’s average maximum temperature in May is 24.9°C. The average minimum is 8.5°C. During the day, you will feel warm — sometimes almost summery if you are in direct sun at lower elevations around town.

Mornings and evenings are noticeably cooler. Once the sun goes behind the mountains, which happens early in the valleys, the temperature drops. A light jacket or warm layer for evenings is always useful.

May averages 5.7 rainy days and about 78.9 mm of rainfall for the month. Most rain falls in short spells, often in the afternoon or evening. It rarely ruins full days but can affect outdoor plans if you do not build in some flexibility.

Does It Snow in Manali in May?

Straight answer: Manali town does not get regular snowfall in May. The snow you see in photos of Manali in May is almost always from the surrounding peaks, not from the town itself.

What you can see is snow at higher elevations — Solang Valley, the area approaching Rohtang, and the Lahaul side via the Atal Tunnel depending on that season’s conditions. Whether you can reach those points in May depends on the specific year and road clearance progress.

A lot of travellers come to Manali in May expecting to wake up to snowfall. That is not realistic in most years. But driving 20-30 kilometres up toward the higher zones and finding snow patches is genuinely possible and well worth planning for.

Can You Visit Rohtang Pass in May 2026?

The honest answer is: we do not know exactly when Rohtang Pass will open in May 2026, and anyone who tells you a fixed date is guessing.

The BRO clears Rohtang from both sides each year, and the timeline depends on how much snow fell that winter. In some years it opens in early May. In others, tourist access does not start until late May. Even after it opens, tourist movement is regulated through an official permit system online, and initially access may be limited to Marhi rather than the full pass.

Our advice: do not build your entire Manali trip around Rohtang. Plan it as a bonus, not the main event. If it is open when you are there, great. Snow patches often remain at Solang even in May, and you can combine the visit with paragliding or a simple walk through the valley. It is much closer to Manali than Rohtang and does not require the same permit process.

The Atal Tunnel route to Sissu is another good option. Once you cross the tunnel, you are in the Lahaul Valley, and the landscape on that side retains snow longer than the Manali side. Road conditions and entry permissions for certain circuits follow the e-Aagman system for vehicles, so check the latest rules before heading out.

Our team always recommends checking local road conditions 24 to 48 hours before you plan a snow-point outing. Conditions at this elevation can change quickly, especially in early May.

What most tourists get wrong: they assume that if Rohtang is closed, there is nothing to do near Manali. In reality, Solang and the Sissu side via the tunnel often offer snow access even when Rohtang is off limits. Do not give up on the snow experience just because one route is shut.

Best Places to Visit in Manali in May

Hidimba Devi Temple

It is one of the most worth-it stops in town, especially in May when the annual fair takes place. We have seen the Solang Valley road backed up for 45 minutes in both directions on a May Saturday.

Weekdays, especially Monday through Thursday, are noticeably calmer. Hotels book out weeks in advance and rates across all categories go up compared to off-season. — these shift year to year based on demand.

Cab rates for snow-point trips and day outings also go up in May. Always agree on the price and what is included before getting into any vehicle.

The places where you can keep costs reasonable: Old Manali has excellent budget cafés and cheaper guesthouses compared to the Mall Road side. Eating at local dhabas around Vashisht and the old bus stand area is significantly cheaper than the tourist-facing restaurants on Mall Road.

What we always tell budget travellers: book your accommodation at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance if you are coming in May. The last-minute options are limited and expensive. Our Manali Tour Packages include handpicked stays that work well for different budgets.

What to Pack for Manali in May

Layers are the key word. You will need a T-shirt for sunny afternoons and a warm fleece or light jacket for mornings, evenings, and any time you go above 3,000 metres.

Pack walking shoes with good grip — not sandals, not formal shoes. Manali involves a lot of uneven paths, cobbled lanes, and sometimes wet ground near waterfalls and snow patches. Comfortable hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers with ankle support make a real difference.

Sunscreen with high SPF is non-negotiable at this altitude. The UV intensity above 2,000 metres is higher than most people expect, and you will burn faster than you think even on a partly cloudy day. Sunglasses and a cap are equally important.

One warmer layer — a down jacket, a thick fleece, or a thermal — is useful if you are heading to Solang or the Rohtang area. Start the morning at Hidimba Devi Temple before the crowds arrive — around 8 to 8:30 AM. Then walk through the cedar forest area, head to the Manu temple, and spend the afternoon in Old Manali. Walk the lanes, eat lunch at one of the old cafés, cross the bridge, and spend the evening at leisure. Mall Road in the evening is good for food and people-watching.

Day 2

Is for the snow side. Head to Solang Valley as early as possible — a 6:30 AM departure is ideal. If Rohtang access is available with permits, your driver will advise on the morning of the trip. If not, Solang and the views from the upper Solang area are excellent. Return by early afternoon. If you have energy, a quick stop at Vashisht for the hot springs and a walk toward Jogini works well in the late afternoon.

Day 3

Is the Sissu day trip. Take the Atal Tunnel early and spend the morning in Sissu. Return to Manali by early afternoon and use the evening for anything you missed.

4-Day Manali Itinerary for May

Follow the same 3-day plan above for Days 1, 2, and 3.

Day 4

Is the slow day, and it is often the one travellers remember most. Return by evening and spend your last night properly resting before the journey back.

This 4-day version works especially well for couples who want a mix of adventure and slowness, and for families who need a recovery day built into the plan.

Travel Tips Before Visiting Manali in May

Start every outing early

This single habit will improve your May trip more than any other change you can make. Snow points, temple visits, café spots — everything is better before 9 AM and worse after 11 AM in peak season.

Book accommodation at least 3 to 4 weeks ahead

May is not the month to wing it. Good options fill up fast, and the last-minute alternatives are often overpriced and undersized.

Do not overfill your itinerary

Three solid spots per day is the maximum that feels good in the mountains. Trying to do five or six things leaves you tired and rushing through everything.

Check permit and road status the night before any snow-point plan

Rohtang permits sell out quickly and the permit system is online — do not assume you can sort it the morning of the trip. For Solang and Sissu, check local conditions 24 hours ahead.

Late March 2026 brought significant snowfall that temporarily disrupted tourist movement near Solang and the Atal Tunnel approach. Mountain conditions can change fast even in May. Always have a backup plan for the day.

Is Manali in May Better for Couples, Families, or Friends?

For couples

May in Manali works well. Old Manali has the right atmosphere for slow mornings and long café afternoons. The Solang trip and a Sissu day trip together make for a genuinely memorable short trip. Midweek is far better for couples who want some quiet.

For families

May is solid. The weather is comfortable, kids enjoy Solang, and the main sightseeing spots are all accessible. Avoid weekends if possible and plan activity days with early starts to keep the energy levels manageable. Manali is safe and well-connected enough for families with children of most ages.

For groups of friends

May is excellent for the adventure side — paragliding, rafting, and the Rohtang or Solang trips are best done with a group. The energy in Manali in May is high, and it suits the trip-with-friends format well. Book together and book early.

You can explore Popular Group Tours if you want to join a group heading to Manali in May — it is often cheaper and better organised than planning it solo from scratch.

Final Verdict: Should You Plan a Manali Trip in May 2026?

Yes, with realistic expectations. Manali in May is excellent for most travellers. The weather is comfortable, the scenery is beautiful, most activities are running, and the higher areas give you a real shot at seeing snow.

The honest negatives: it is crowded, it is expensive compared to other months, and the popular spots can feel more like tourist infrastructure than mountain wilderness on a busy weekend.

The people who love May in Manali most are the ones who book early, start early, and do not try to do too much. If that sounds like your travel style, May is a great choice.

If peace, quiet, and lower prices matter more than convenience, consider late June or September instead. But if May is your window, make the most of it — Manali delivers even in peak season when you plan it right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is May a good time to visit Manali?

          <line x1="6" y1="1" x2="6" y2="11"/><line x1="1" y1="6" x2="11" y2="6"/>

        Yes.
