The monsoon is packing up, the valley turns deep green, and the peak-season crowd from May and June is gone. You get cooler days, softer hotel rates, and cafes that actually have empty tables.

But September is also the tail end of the rains. The first half can still hand you a wet afternoon or a blocked stretch of road. Get the timing right and it is one of the nicest times to be in the Kullu valley. Get it wrong and a single landslide can swallow a whole day.

Quick Answer: Is September a Good Time to Visit Manali?

Yes. September is a good time for Manali if you want post-monsoon greenery, cooler weather, fewer crowds, and a relaxed pace. The safer planning window is usually the second half of September, because early September can still carry rain and road risk.

Just do not come only for snow. Manali town does not get reliable snowfall in September. Think green valleys, clouds, rivers, waterfalls, cafes, and clean skies instead.

👉 Confused? Then one rainy morning near Mandi delays the drive, and the whole plan collapses like dominoes.

In our five years running Manali trips, the single biggest fix is one buffer day. That one extra day is the difference between a stressful trip and a calm one when September weather does what September weather does.

Manali in September Weather: What Days and Nights Feel Like

Manali September weather usually sits around 10°C to 20°C. Days feel comfortable for sightseeing and walking. Evenings turn cool fast, especially after rain or near the river.

MakeMyTrip lists September rain at around 30 mm with nearly 11 hours of sunlight. Holidify puts it at roughly 20°C by day and 10°C at night with about 8 rainy days.

Some sources disagree. Wanderlog shows a colder 3°C to 12°C, while Cliffhangers claims a warmer 15°C to 27°C with 11 to 15 rainy days and 250 mm of rain. So do not trust one number blindly.

Our practical advice is simple. Pack for mild days and chilly nights in the same bag. A light woollen for the evening does more for you here than checking three weather apps.

Does It Rain in Manali in September?

September is the tail of the monsoon in Manali, not the peak. July and August are the wet heavyweights. By September the rain is easing off.

Indian Holiday notes that the second half of September often brings clearer mornings, and water sports start running again as the clouds pull back. Showers can still hit, mostly in early September.

Here is what we tell our travellers. Do not keep tight road plans on a heavy rain day. Avoid night driving in the mountain sections when it is raining. And if you are coming from Delhi or Chandigarh, keep one buffer day.

Is Manali Safe to Visit in September 2026?

Manali town sightseeing is usually manageable when the weather is normal. The risk is not the town. It is the high-altitude drives and the highways, which need a live check before you commit.

IMD lists the heavy-rain impacts for the region as landslides, mudslides, waterlogging, slippery roads, low visibility, traffic jams, and general service disruptions. IMD Shimla recorded the southwest monsoon covering Himachal Pradesh on 1 July 2026.

On the highway side, NHAI approved ₹825 crore to restore and stabilise flood and landslide-prone stretches on the Kiratpur-Manali highway. Reports flagged 44 critical spots between Pandoh and Manali, including 34 between Kullu and Manali. Check the road status before you leave.

As a live-check example only, the official Lahaul-Spiti road status has listed Delhi to Manali open, Manali to Keylong open, Keylong to Leh open, and Keylong to Kaza closed. Road status changes daily, so treat this as a reminder to check, not a guarantee.

Is There Snow in Manali in September?

Straight answer. Manali town does not get reliable snow in September. If you are booking purely for snowfall, this is the wrong month.

You might catch old snow patches or an early high-altitude flurry near Rohtang, but treat that as a lucky bonus, not the plan. For guaranteed snow, come between December and February.

September is better for green valleys, low clouds sitting on the ridges, full rivers, waterfalls, quiet cafes, and photography. If snow is the whole point of your trip, we will tell you honestly to shift your dates.

Is Rohtang Pass Open in September?

Rohtang Pass is generally in its accessible season from around May or June to October or November. But actual access depends on weather, road condition, and administration rules on the day. Nobody can promise it will be open.

You need a tourism permit for vehicles going to Rohtang for tourism. The permit is valid for one day, to and fro. You can apply only for the next 2 days from the current date, and a printout is compulsory.

You also need valid ID proof and a valid PUC certificate. A congestion charge applies to vehicles crossing Gulaba Bridge, and it too is valid for one day, to and fro.

Many travel sources cite the permit fee at around ₹550 to ₹600, but check the official portal while applying because that is the only number that counts. You get natural hot springs, a temple visit, and a relaxed village walk through old wood-and-stone houses.

For Jogini Waterfall, go easy after rain. The forest trail turns slippery, and a wet September morning is not the time to rush it. This is your culture-and-views day, and a smart lower-altitude backup when Rohtang or Sissu weather looks uncertain.

The orchard trails around Naggar are at their best in September during apple harvest. This is the day most itineraries rush through, and skipping it is a real miss.

Atal Tunnel and Sissu

The Atal Tunnel and Sissu day trip depends fully on weather and road status. Recent 2026 reports show flash-flood disruptions on the Manali-Leh route, so this one must be checked on the morning of travel.

We are not trying to scare you off it. On a clear September day the drive to Sissu is stunning. Just confirm the road first, and keep a backup like Naggar or local sightseeing ready. Want to push further? River rafting, paragliding, short hikes, cafe hopping, photography, riverside stays, and easy sightseeing all fit the weather well.

River rafting and adventure activities are weather-dependent, so confirm them locally on the day. Indian Holiday notes water sports start again by the second half of September as the clouds clear. Even so, we never guarantee any single activity in the mountains.

For a fuller list of what runs and when, our river rafting page and the wider Manali destination guide are the honest starting points. Check into your hotel, rest, then visit Hadimba Temple in the calm part of the afternoon. Spend the evening in Old Manali cafes and end on Mall Road. No long drives on day one.

Day 2: Solang Valley, Nehru Kund and Vashisht

Start early for Solang and keep the activities flexible. Return via Nehru Kund, then spend the evening soaking at Vashisht or wandering Old Manali. The earlier you reach Solang, the smaller the queues.

Day 3: Rohtang Pass or Atal Tunnel and Sissu

Two options here. Rohtang needs a permit and a weather clearance. Atal Tunnel and Sissu need a road-status check on the morning itself.

Keep a backup ready. If both look shaky, swap in Naggar or a relaxed day of local sightseeing. In September, a backup plan is not pessimism, it is just how the mountains work.

Day 4: Naggar Castle, Jana Waterfall and Departure

End low and easy. Naggar Castle for heritage and views, Jana Waterfall for a food-and-photo stop, then depart. This lower-altitude day is a gentle, satisfying way to close the trip.

👉 Pick the right stay & route — we’ll help.

Manali Packing List for September

Pack light woollens and a rain jacket first. Add quick-dry clothes, shoes with grip, and extra socks because wet feet at altitude are miserable. Carry a compact umbrella too, even if the forecast looks sunny.

Round it out with a power bank, a basic medicine kit, and your ID proof. If you are taking your own vehicle to Rohtang, carry the PUC certificate. Waterproof covers for your bags are worth the small effort.

Our local-style rule is one line long. From Chandigarh it is around 300 to 307 km, usually a 7 to 8 hour drive.

Flying in? The nearest airport is Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar, which sources place around 50 to 52 km from Manali. District Kullu confirms the airport is at Bhuntar. Flights here cancel often in bad weather, so keep a road backup.

Two things we push hard in September. Do not drive at night during active rain, and add buffer time for traffic around Mandi, Kullu, and Manali. Those choke points swallow more hours than the distance suggests.

Manali Trip Cost in September

Hotel prices in Manali move daily, so verify before you book. MakeMyTrip examples show a 3-star average around ₹1,604, a 4-star average around ₹3,150, and a 5-star average around ₹11,664, but treat these as rough snapshots, not fixed rates.

MakeMyTrip also showed a Delhi to Manali one-way bus booking at about ₹870. For the Rohtang permit, many sources cite ₹550 to ₹600. Check the official portal while applying, since that is the only figure that matters on the day.

Adventure activity prices change by operator, weather, and season, so we quote them fresh rather than guess. HRTC’s ordinary and some Volvo services give a fare concession to women travellers on many routes, which quietly trims the Delhi-Manali cost. Expect greener hills, the odd heavy shower, and a real chance of a road delay on the Delhi and Chandigarh approaches. It is beautiful, but it rewards flexible travellers.

Late September is the calmer half. Mornings clear up more often, water sports come back online, and the apple harvest lights up the Naggar and Kullu orchards. If your dates are fixed and you want the safer bet, lean late September.

In our experience, couples and first-timers do best in the last ten days of the month. That is when the weather steadies without losing the post-monsoon green that makes September special.

Local Insider Tips for Manali in September

Try Siddu, the local steamed Himachali bread, at the small trail-side stalls near Old Manali. It is the warm, filling bite you will crave on a cool September evening, and it is the kind of thing tourists walk right past on the way to the loud cafes. For a proper riverside sit-down, the Old Manali cafe strip around Cafe 1947 is a reliable pick after a wet afternoon.

Here is one to skip. Do not force the Rohtang trip on a cloudy, rainy day just because you already have a permit. On a bad-weather day you will see fog and little else. The Atal Tunnel and Sissu drive gives you snow-capped Lahaul views without the permit stress, and it is our go-to swap when Rohtang weather turns.

A warning worth the numbers. Some agents inflate the Rohtang permit, quoting well above the roughly ₹550 to ₹600 range many sources cite. Remember the permit is applied for online, only 2 days ahead, and needs a printout plus valid ID and PUC. If someone is charging a fat premium for a same-day permit, walk away.

September vs October: Which Month Is Better for Manali?

September is greener, quieter, and more romantic right after the rain.
