The skies clear up after the monsoon, the crowds thin out, and the light on those brown-golden mountains gets sharp. We run this route every season out of Shimla, and September travellers almost always come back happier than July ones. Here is exactly how the pass behaves in September, what the road really looks like, and how to plan it without getting stuck.

Quick Answer: Is Kunzum Pass Good in September?

Yes. September is one of the better months to cross Kunzum Pass. Skies are clearer, traffic is thinner, and it falls inside the reliable late-season window before winter shuts everything down.

The first three weeks are safer than the last few days of September. Early snow can arrive near the end of the month with no warning.

One rule you cannot skip in 2026: check the road status on the same day you travel. Online updates are conflicting this year, so a fresh local confirmation is non-negotiable.

👉 Confused? So September sits right inside that window.

The broader tourist season is wider than that. Most years the route stays open from late May or early June all the way to mid or late October, depending on how fast BRO clears the snow and how the weather behaves.

Here is the 2026 confusion you need to know about. The official Lahaul-Spiti road status page shows Keylong to Kaza as closed. But our own latest road-status update says the Manali-Kaza route via Kunzum opened for light 4×4 vehicles in late May and June 2026.

So do not trust one source. Cross-check the official page, ask a local driver or camp owner, and message us before you lock your dates.

If you want the logistics handled end to end, our Spiti Valley tour packages already build the Kunzum crossing into the circuit with buffer days for exactly this kind of uncertainty.

What Is Kunzum Pass Like in September?

September at Kunzum feels crisp, windy, and much quieter than July and August. The monsoon haze is gone, so the views are sharper than any other month.

The mountains turn brown and gold. Prayer flags snap in the wind at the Kunzum Mata temple. The sky opens up into that deep high-altitude blue you only get after the rains stop.

Remember this is a high crossing, not a hangout spot. Twenty to thirty minutes at the top is enough. Take your photos, spin around the chorten, then move on. The daytime sun feels fine, but the number that matters is the wind chill, which can make it feel far colder than the reading.

Once the sun drops behind a peak, the temperature falls fast. What felt comfortable at noon turns biting within the hour.

Carry thermals, a warm jacket, gloves, a woollen cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm. Smooth tarmac, quick driving, good spots for chai. Our Manali tour packages usually start travellers here to ease them in.

Gramphu to Batal is the roughest stretch on the whole circuit, about 47 km of broken road, loose gravel, and water crossings. This section eats far more time than its length suggests. Go slow and let the driver pick the lines.

Batal to Kunzum climbs through around 15 tight hairpin bends. It is steep and slow but the views open up fast as you gain height.

Kunzum to Losar and on to Kaza is usually better than the Manali side, though still rough in patches. This is the gentler half of the crossing.

One local tip that saves trips: water crossings are lower in the morning and get deeper by afternoon as the day’s snowmelt builds up. Cross early. Never drive this route after dark, and avoid late-afternoon crossings when the streams are highest.

If you are starting from the Lahaul side, our Sissu tour packages and the wider Lahaul-Spiti circuit both feed into this same Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum line.

Which Route Is Better in September: Manali to Kaza or Kaza to Manali?

For most travellers, we recommend the classic circuit direction. Enter via Shimla, Kinnaur, and Kaza, then exit over Kunzum, Batal, and down to Manali, if road status allows.

The reason is your body. Coming up the Shimla side gives you several days to adjust to altitude before you ever reach Kunzum. Coming straight up from Manali gains height too fast and the risk of altitude sickness jumps.

Manali to Kaza in one push is faster but harder on you. What we always tell first-timers doing a full circuit is to keep Kunzum as the exit, not the entry. Start easy from the Kinnaur tour packages side and let the mountains bring you up slowly.

Can Cars, Bikes and Sedans Cross Kunzum Pass in September?

4×4 Expedition in Himachal Pradesh

High-clearance SUVs and 4×4 vehicles are the right tool for this route. The Gramphu-Batal rough patch and the Chandratal diversion punish anything low-slung.

Experienced bikers cross Kunzum happily in September if they start early, carry proper riding gear, and have a backup plan. Our bike expedition trips time the crossing around the day’s weather window and keep a support vehicle behind the group.

Sedans are not recommended for the rough Manali side or the Chandratal diversion unless road status is freshly confirmed and your driver knows the route well. An honest warning: we have seen sedans crack their underbody on the Batal stretch and turn a dream trip into a repair bill.

Whatever you drive, check tyre condition, carry a spare tyre and a puncture kit, plan your fuel, and make sure the underbody clearance is real. The lake sits blue and still against the barren slopes with the clearest skies of the season.

The Batal to Chandratal diversion is around 14 km of rough track. The camps sit in a designated zone roughly 1.5 to 2 km from the lake, and the walk to the water takes about 20 to 40 minutes depending on your pace and the altitude. You do not camp right on the shore.

Camps generally run through most of September, but some start winding down in the last week depending on weather and bookings. Confirm camp availability before you leave Kaza or Manali, or you may reach a cold parking lot with nowhere to sleep.

For a ready-made loop that already stitches Kunzum and Chandratal together with acclimatisation built in, see our Spiti circuit with Chandratal.

What Places Can You See Near Kunzum Pass in September?

At the top itself, the Kunzum Mata temple and the wall of prayer flags are the main stops, along with the Chandra-Bhaga range views on a clear day.

On the Lahaul side, Batal is your food-and-fuel reality check, a couple of tin-roof dhabas and nothing fancy. On the Spiti side, Losar is the first proper village.

Chandratal is the big add-on. Deeper into Spiti you have Kaza, Key Monastery, Kibber, and the Chicham bridge. Do not overpack the day, though. Road conditions and daylight matter more than a long checklist. If you are curious whether the lake sits in Lahaul or Spiti, the short answer is Lahaul, near the border, but most trips reach it from the Kaza side.

Do You Need a Permit or Entry Fee for Kunzum Pass?

Indian travellers generally do not need a special permit for Kunzum Pass itself. The rough sections and water crossings are safest in the morning, and you want daylight in hand. Do not cross after dark.

Do not linger at the top. Twenty to thirty minutes is plenty. Keep at least one buffer day in your plan for weather, and avoid alcohol before the crossing.

Watch yourself and your group for headache, nausea, breathlessness, or unusual tiredness. Those are altitude warning signs. If they get worse, descend, do not push on.

Confirm road status with local drivers, homestays, or our team before you leave. This is the one thing that saves more trips than any gadget.

Suggested Itineraries Including Kunzum Pass in September

Kaza to Kunzum Pass Day Trip

This suits travellers already staying in Kaza who are acclimatised.
