Most reasonably fit people take four to six hours to climb and three to four hours to come down. It is one of the gentler Himalayan trails in terms of technical demand, and it is a genuine full day of walking.

The single most important thing to understand before you plan anything else: the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department banned overnight camping at Kheerganga in July 2024, and reporting through the current season indicates the restriction remains in force. Entry is permitted before 10 AM and trekkers are expected to begin descending by 2 PM. Overnight stays happen in the valley villages instead, at Barshaini, Kalga, Nakthan or Tosh.

That one rule reshapes the whole trip. Plans built around sleeping beside the hot springs no longer apply. The trek is still very much worth doing, but it needs an early start and a night in the valley beforehand.

Rules of this kind are revised from time to time by the relevant authority. Anything on this page relating to timings, camping or entry should be confirmed close to your travel date.

    Latest destination forecast

Kheerganga Trek Live Weather, Forecast & Travel Essentials

Latest model-based mountain forecast and practical location details for planning your visit.

    Measurement units
    °C
    °F

At a glance

Location details for this destination

पर्यटक स्थल

Kheerganga Trek

Forecast point

Kheerganga

District

Kullu

State

Himachal Pradesh

Elevation

2,960 mApproximate ground elevation supplied to the forecast model

Place type

Trek

Time zone

Asia/Kolkata

Local time

रवि, 11 अक्टूबर, 12:54 पूर्वाह्न

Mountain conditions can vary sharply between the trailhead, camps and high point. You walk beside the Parvati River through pine and deodar forest, past waterfalls and small villages, and finish at a meadow with natural hot springs. For a lot of people this is their first Himalayan trail, and it delivers a proper mountain day without needing technical skill or high-altitude experience.

The valley itself adds to it. Nakthan, Kalga and Tosh are working Himachali villages, and the walk moves through orchards and forest rather than along a road. Kheerganga also carries religious significance for both Hindus and Sikhs, and the meadow is quieter now than during the tent years.

Some travellers will be happier elsewhere. If the appeal was sleeping under the stars at the top, that is no longer available and Triund near Dharamshala may suit you better. If you want a shorter walk, Tosh village is a much lighter option from the same base. If you are looking for high-altitude drama and open ridgelines, Bhrigu Lake or Hampta Pass from Manali will give you more of that. And if walking six hours uphill sounds unpleasant rather than enjoyable, be honest with yourself now rather than at the halfway point.

Our treks in Himachal Pradesh guide compares the main options if you are still deciding, and the Himachal Trek Map lets you filter by difficulty and season.

The route: three ways up from Barshaini

Everything starts at Barshaini, where the road ends. From the bridge there, three trails lead up, and they merge before the final climb.

Nakthan route

The most used path, and the fastest. Cross the bridge, turn left, and follow the left bank of the Parvati River up through Nakthan village. This is the best-marked option, it has the most cafes and rest stops, and it is where most first-timers go. If you are walking without a guide, take this one.

Kalga route

Turn right at the bridge instead and climb towards Kalga village. This trail runs through denser forest, is quieter, and rejoins the main path around the midway point. It is slightly longer and better shaded, which matters on a warm morning. Navigation is less obvious than on the Nakthan side, so a guide is sensible for a first visit.

Tosh route

Longer again, and the natural choice only if you slept at Tosh the night before. It joins the main trail lower down near Pulga.

A common approach among experienced walkers is to climb via Kalga for the shade and descend via Nakthan for the clearer footing. That is a preference, not a rule.

What you pass along the way

Nakthan village is roughly the midpoint and where the routes converge. There are small cafes here and it is a sensible place to rest and refill. Beyond it the trail reaches Rudra Nag, a serpent-shaped waterfall with clean cold water and a small dharamshala. Further up there is a bridge crossing and a waterfall cafe near the halfway point of the upper section.

After that the gradient increases and stays increased. The last stretch is a continuous climb, and it is the part people underestimate. The path stays clear, but it is steady work. Then the ground opens out, and you can see the huts and the steam from the springs.

Do not take shortcuts. Informal cut-throughs appear all along this route, and they have caused serious accidents. The time saved is not worth it.

Kheerganga Trek distance: one way, round trip and driving

This is where most sources contradict each other, so it is worth separating carefully.

Measurement

Approximate figure

One-way walking distance, Nakthan route

About 12 to 13 km

One-way walking distance, Kalga route

About 14 km

One-way walking distance, Tosh route

Longer again, around 17 km

Round-trip walking distance, Nakthan route

Roughly 24 to 26 km

Kasol to Barshaini by road

About 16 to 17 km

The reason published figures for Kheerganga Trek distance vary so widely is straightforward. Some pages quote one way, some quote the return journey, and some quote a different route without saying so. A source claiming 22 kilometres is almost certainly describing a round trip on a shorter route. A source claiming 12 kilometres is describing one way on the Nakthan path. Both can be correct.

Distances on hill trails are also approximate by nature. Treat these as planning figures rather than measured survey data.

How long the walk actually takes

Ascent is usually four to six hours. Descent is usually three to four. Add time at the top and you are looking at eight to eleven hours of activity for the day, before the drive back to your accommodation.

Walking time varies with fitness, pace, weather and trail conditions. Wet ground and fresh snow both slow things considerably. Groups move at the speed of their slowest member, which is worth planning for honestly rather than optimistically.

Because of the current entry and descent timings, the day is tighter than it looks. Leaving Barshaini around 5 AM gives a comfortable margin. Leaving at 8 AM does not.

Realistic trip plans

Overnight camping at the top is not currently permitted, so any itinerary that includes it is out of date. These are the structures that actually work.

Two nights, three days from a nearby city

Night one in Kasol or, better, in Barshaini or Kalga. Trek day. Night two in the valley. Depart on day three. This is the tightest sensible plan and it works well if you arrive rested.

Three nights, four days

Adds a buffer night, which matters more than people expect. If the weather turns on your intended trek day, you have a second attempt. It also gives you a relaxed day in Kasol or Tosh.

Trek plus Parvati Valley

Four nights or more, combining the trek with Manikaran, Tosh and time by the river. This suits couples and groups who want a holiday rather than an expedition.

What does not work

A single-night trip with the trek squeezed in between two long drives. You will arrive tired, start late, and miss the entry window. Whatever the trek costs you in money, it costs more in wasted travel days when it goes wrong.

Staying at Barshaini or Kalga rather than Kasol on the night before saves you a thirty to forty minute pre-dawn transfer, and that is a meaningful advantage on a day with a hard start time.

If you want to build the trek into a wider Himachal itinerary, our trip itinerary planner is a useful starting point.

Kheerganga Trek difficulty explained honestly

The Kheerganga Trek difficulty is best described as easy to moderate. It is technically undemanding: no rope, no crampons in normal season, no exposed scrambling, no unbridged river crossings on the main route. The path is clear and well used.

What makes it demanding is volume and gradient. You are walking twelve or more kilometres uphill, then the same distance down, in a single day. The lower half is gentle and pleasant. The upper half is a sustained climb that does not really let up until you arrive. Descending puts real load through the knees, which is why trekking poles help more here than most people expect.

Conditions that make it harder:

Rain, which turns forest sections slick and muddy

Fresh snow on the upper trail in late autumn and winter

Starting late, which means climbing through the warmest hours

Carrying more than you need

Poor footwear, which is the single most common cause of trouble on this route

Note that HimTrails’ own pages have described this trek as both easy and moderate. Both descriptions have some truth in them, which is exactly why a single-word label is unhelpful. A regular walker will find it manageable. Someone who does not walk much will find it hard, though usually still achievable with a slow pace and an early start.

Nobody should describe this trek as effortless or risk free. Accidents happen here, mostly on shortcuts, in bad weather, and to people who ran out of daylight.

Fitness and preparation

If you can walk eight to ten kilometres on flat ground without real difficulty, you have a reasonable base. Three to four weeks of preparation makes the day considerably more enjoyable.

Useful preparation:

Walk regularly, building up to ten kilometres or more

Add stairs or an incline, since flat walking does not prepare you for sustained climbing

Practise descending, which uses different muscles and is where soreness usually comes from

Walk in the shoes you plan to trek in, so they are broken in

Carry your daypack on at least one training walk

Sleep properly the night before, which matters more than any last-minute training

If you have a heart condition, a respiratory condition, a knee or joint problem, or any ongoing health concern, please speak to your doctor before booking. We are trek planners, not medical professionals, and we would rather you had that conversation with someone qualified.

Altitude and how your body will feel

Barshaini sits at valley level and Kheerganga is at roughly 2,960 metres. That is high enough to notice and considerably lower than the altitudes where serious altitude illness usually becomes a concern.

Most people feel it as breathlessness on the climb and mild tiredness, both of which are normal. Because the current rules mean you descend the same day, you also spend very little time at the maximum altitude, which reduces exposure further.

Even so, pay attention to how you feel. Persistent headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual disorientation are reasons to stop climbing and go down, not reasons to push through. Descending is the reliable response. If you have travelled straight from sea level and are also planning higher trips afterwards, an extra night in the valley beforehand does no harm.

We do not give advice on altitude medication. If you want to discuss it, ask a doctor.

Kheerganga Trek best time and seasonal conditions

The Kheerganga Trek best time is broadly March to June and September to November, with the shoulder months usually offering the best balance of weather and crowds.

मौसम

महीने

What to expect

Spring

March to April

Cool, fresh, possible snow on the upper trail early in the season. Weather in the Parvati Valley changes quickly, and access decisions rest with the authorities rather than with any operator.

Daylight matters as much as weather. In the shorter months, an early start is not optional.

Snow and winter conditions

Snow can appear on the upper section from around November and typically stays into early spring, though timing varies year to year. There is a real difference between fresh snowfall, which is soft and slows you down, and settled or refrozen snow, which becomes slippery and is where people fall.

Lower forest sections often stay clear when the meadow is white. That asymmetry catches people out, because conditions at Barshaini tell you very little about conditions at the top.

If you are considering a winter attempt: go with someone who knows the route in snow, carry proper traction, start very early, and accept that turning back is a normal outcome. Winter access can also be interrupted by road conditions on the approach.

Snowfall cannot be promised for any set of dates. If seeing snow is the main reason for your trip, tell us and we will suggest realistic alternatives rather than sell you a maybe.

Permits, entry rules and Kheerganga Trek camping rules

This section carries the most significant recent change, so please read it before finalising anything.

Overnight camping at Kheerganga is not permitted under current rules

The Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, through the Parvati Division, ordered the removal of camping facilities in July 2024 following complaints about waste accumulation and ecological pressure. Reporting through the current season indicates the restriction has continued. Enforcement has been described as strict, with penalties including revocation of permission and registration of an FIR.

Alongside that, entry timings have been applied: trekkers are expected to reach Kheerganga before 10 AM and to begin descending by 2 PM.

Anyone still marketing a Kheerganga Trek camping package with a night at the top is either working from outdated information or ignoring the order. If you have been offered one, ask them directly when they last checked with the Forest Department.

Overnight stays are available in the valley villages instead: Barshaini, Kalga, Nakthan and Tosh. In practice this works well, and several trekkers find the villages more comfortable than the old tent arrangement.

On registration: trekkers report registering at a checkpost near the trailhead, with a small per-person charge and photo identification required. Requirements and amounts have changed over time and may vary by route.

Other rules worth respecting regardless of enforcement:

Carry all waste back down with you

Avoid single-use plastic

Fire restrictions apply in forest areas

The hot springs are a religious site and should be treated as one

Drone use in forest areas may require permission

How to reach Barshaini

Barshaini is the last road point. Everything beyond it is on foot.

By road from Delhi: roughly 520 to 535 km to Kasol, usually twelve to fourteen hours via Chandigarh and Bhuntar. The road narrows and slows considerably after Bhuntar.

By bus: overnight services run from Delhi towards Bhuntar. From Bhuntar, local buses head up the valley via Kasol and Manikaran. Buses also run from Kasol towards Barshaini.

By air: Bhuntar (Kullu Manali Airport) is the nearest airport, around 30 km from Kasol, though flight frequency and reliability are limited. Chandigarh is the more dependable air option, with a long road transfer afterwards.

By train: the nearest practical railheads are Chandigarh and Pathankot, both followed by a road journey.

Kasol to Barshaini: local buses and shared taxis operate, and private taxis are available. The drive takes roughly thirty to forty minutes.

Fares and schedules change with season and demand, so we have not printed figures that will be wrong by the time you read this. Confirm locally or ask us when you enquire.

Two practical points. Arranging a taxi at 5 AM in Kasol is not always simple on the day, so book it the night before. And the last dependable fuel and ATM points are well below Barshaini, so sort both out earlier in the valley.

Where to stay before and after

You cannot sleep at Kheerganga, so where you sleep the night before genuinely affects your day.

कसोल

Has the widest choice of accommodation, cafes and services. It is also furthest from the trailhead, which costs you a pre-dawn transfer.

Barshaini and Kalga

Put you at or beside the trailhead. Options are simpler, but you can start walking earlier and more calmly.

Tosh

Ts a pleasant village stay and works if you intend to use the Tosh route.

Things worth confirming when booking anywhere in the valley: whether breakfast can be served very early or packed, whether luggage can be left during the trek, hot water availability, and heating in the colder months. Late arrivals should be flagged in advance, since valley properties are not always staffed through the night.

We do not name specific properties on this page. Availability changes constantly and we would rather recommend something we have checked for your actual dates.

Food, water and toilets on the trail

Small cafes and dhabas operate along the main Nakthan route, particularly around Nakthan village and near the waterfall crossings. They serve simple food and hot drinks. Vegetarian food is easy to find.

That said, do not build your day around them. Opening depends on season, weather and the individual owner. In shoulder and winter months, several will be shut. Carry enough food to complete the day without buying anything.

Water sources exist along the route, including at Rudra Nag. Many trekkers refill there. If you have a sensitive stomach or are unsure, carry a purification method. Bringing a refillable bottle rather than buying plastic is both better for the valley and more practical.

Toilet facilities are basic and limited. Plan accordingly, and carry a waste bag for anything you generate.

Since the camping ban, the meadow has fewer permanent services than it once had. Assume less rather than more.

Mobile network, cash and practical facilities

Mobile coverage is patchy and varies by network, weather and exact position. Expect stretches with nothing. Download offline maps before you leave the valley and tell someone your plan.

Digital payments work inconsistently once you are above Kasol. Carry cash, in small denominations, and withdraw it before heading up the valley. ATMs above Kasol are unreliable and frequently out of service.

Charging points are limited on the trail, so carry a power bank if you rely on your phone for navigation or photographs.

Medical facilities in the upper valley are basic. Anything serious requires evacuation down the valley, which takes time. Carry a small personal first aid kit including blister care, along with any medication you take regularly. Travel insurance covering trekking is sensible.

We cannot promise rescue capability or evacuation timing on this route, and neither can anyone else honestly.

What to pack

Essential

Broken-in trekking shoes with proper grip

Two pairs of good walking socks

Daypack, twenty to thirty litres

Refillable water bottle, at least two litres capacity total

Food and snacks for the full day

Warm layer, since the top is much colder than the trailhead

Waterproof jacket

Sun protection: cap, sunglasses, sunscreen

Photo identification

Personal medication and basic first aid

Power bank

Waste bag

Cash

Season dependent

Extra insulation and gloves in colder months

Traction devices if snow is present

Quick-dry layers in warmer months

Change of clothes and a small towel if you intend to use the springs

Optional but useful

Trekking poles, particularly for the descent

Headlamp, in case the day runs long

Light rain cover for your pack

Usually arranged by an operator on a guided trek

Guide

Trailhead transfers

Group first aid

Registration formalities

Not normally needed

Tent and sleeping bag, since overnight stays at the top are not permitted

Technical climbing equipment in normal season

Safety and responsible trekking

Start early. Almost every problem on this route traces back to a late start.

Stay on the marked path. The shortcuts on this trail have a bad history and there is no version of the arithmetic where saving twenty minutes is worth it.

Set a turnaround time before you begin and hold to it, whatever the weather is doing and however close you feel. The mountain will be there next year.

Weather changes quickly in the Parvati Valley. Cold and wet is a genuinely dangerous combination on a long descent, so carry the waterproof even on a clear morning.

Solo trekking on the main Nakthan route is common and generally manageable for experienced walkers in good conditions. For a first visit, in poor weather, in snow, or on the quieter routes, walking with a guide or a companion is the sensible choice.

Keep your group together. Splitting up on a long trail with patchy phone coverage is how people end up separated for hours.

On responsible trekking: carry your waste back down, avoid single-use plastic, respect fire restrictions, do not play loud music, treat the villages and the hot springs as the lived-in and sacred places they are, and follow instructions from guides and forest staff. The camping ban exists because previous visitors did not do these things. The trail is cleaner now. Keep it that way.

Who this trek suits

Fit beginners manage it well with an early start and a slow pace. This is a very good first Himalayan trek.

Couples find it works nicely as part of a wider Parvati Valley trip.

Friend groups enjoy it, though the group needs to agree on pace and start time beforehand.

Families can do it if the children walk regularly and enjoy long days outdoors. It is a real distance, and it is not a stroll. A modified plan, such as walking partway to Nakthan and returning, is a reasonable alternative for younger children.

Older travellers who walk regularly often complete it comfortably. Those who do not should consider a shorter option or a guided, slower plan.

Solo travellers are common on the main route. See the safety section above.

Corporate and photography groups work well here, though larger groups move slowly and need an earlier start than they think.

We deliberately do not publish age limits. Fitness and walking habit matter far more than a number, and a blanket rule would be wrong in both directions. Tell us about your group honestly and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

Planning your trek with HimTrails

If you would rather not manage the logistics yourself, this is where we can help. A guided arrangement usually covers the trailhead transfer, a local guide, registration formalities, accommodation in the valley for the nights either side, and meals as agreed. What matters more than the list is that the arrangement matches the current rules, which is the thing most likely to go wrong if you book from an outdated page.

When comparing any Kheerganga arrangement, ours or anyone else’s, check these specific points: how many nights are included and where; whether the trailhead transfer is included in both directions; whether the price is for a private or a shared group departure; the minimum group size that price depends on; whether a guide is included or extra; how registration and forest formalities are handled; what happens if weather closes the trail on your date; and whether any overnight element is proposed at Kheerganga itself, which under current rules it should not be.

Tell us your dates and group and we will send you something specific rather than a template.

Whatever you decide to book, get these confirmed in writing before you pay anything:

Pickup point, drop point and timings

Whether trailhead transfers are included both ways

Guide arrangement and whether it is included

Registration and permit handling

Which meals are included

Accommodation location and category for each night

Where you sleep on the night before the trek

Any equipment provided

Taxes

Insurance, and what it does and does not cover

Cancellation terms

What happens if weather or an official order prevents the trek

What is explicitly excluded, including emergency evacuation costs

What affects the cost of a guided trek

We have not printed prices on this page because a real quotation depends on your specific situation, and a number here would mislead you. These are the factors that move it:

Travel dates, and whether they fall in peak season

Weekends and public holidays

Group size, since most costs divide across the group

Private versus shared departure

Pickup city and how far transport has to travel

Vehicle type

Number of nights and where you stay

Accommodation standard

Meals included

Guide arrangement

Registration fees and forest charges

Any equipment hire

Trip length and destination extensions

Applicable taxes

Live pricing on the HimTrails package inventory is the source of truth.
