A ridge walk on the lower Dhauladhar, reached from above McLeod Ganj rather than from Dharamshala town itself. Usually done as a long day walk, sometimes as a regulated overnight. Best in spring and autumn, hardest in monsoon and winter. Entry now involves registration and a fee at a forest checkpost, and camping is capped, so both should be confirmed close to your travel date.

What to know before you go

The Triund Trek is a walk up to an open grass ridge on the lower Dhauladhar range in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, with the Kangra Valley falling away on one side and the Dhauladhar wall rising on the other. Most people start from above McLeod Ganj, near the Gallu Devi temple roadhead, not from Dharamshala town.

From Gallu the walk is roughly 5 to 6 km one way; described from McLeod Ganj on foot it is commonly given as about 9 km one way. The ridge sits at roughly 2,830 to 2,850 metres. Ascent typically takes 3 to 4 hours and descent 2 to 3 hours, which makes it a realistic day walk for a reasonably fit adult, and a popular first Himalayan trek.

That is the encouraging half. The qualifications matter just as much. Cloud can close the view entirely on any day of the year, and it does so most afternoons in summer and monsoon. Rain makes the forest section slippery and the last stretch genuinely unpleasant. Snow and ice change the walk into a different proposition needing traction and, for most people, a guide.

Entry now requires registration and a fee at a forest checkpost, camping is capped at a small number of tents rather than freely available, and both the fees and the operating arrangement changed during 2026. Food stalls along the way are informal and seasonal, so carry water and food rather than counting on them. Trail access, camping permission and fees should all be reconfirmed close to your departure date.

Current trek status

Rules on this route have changed more than once in recent years, and a page that simply says “open” is not telling you anything useful. Before you travel, check trail access, road access up to the roadhead, the weather forecast, rain, snow, ice and fog on the ridge, whether overnight camping is being permitted, the current entry fee, the registration requirement, any daily visitor limit, checkpost entry and exit timings, and whether a guide is being required for the conditions.

A route that is open for daytime walking is not the same as permission to stay the night. Treat those as two separate questions and confirm both.

    Latest destination forecast

Triund Trek Live Weather, Forecast & Travel Essentials

Latest model-based mountain forecast and practical location details for planning your visit.

    Measurement units
    °C
    °F

At a glance

Location details for this destination

Destination

Triund Trek

Forecast point

Triund ridge

District

Kangra

State

Himachal Pradesh

Elevation

2,850 mApproximate ground elevation supplied to the forecast model

Place type

Trek

Time zone

Asia/Kolkata

Local time

शनि, 31 अक्टूबर, 10:22 पूर्वाह्न

Trek character

Moderate mountain walk to a high meadow below the Dhauladhar snowline

Trail context

Common approaches start above McLeod Ganj and Dharamkot

Known for

Views across Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar range

Mountain conditions can vary sharply between the trailhead, camps and high point. Very few walks in India put you on an open Himalayan ridge within a few hours of a town with cafés, ATMs and a bus stand. You climb through oak, deodar and rhododendron forest, the trees thin out, and the ground opens into grass with the Dhauladhar directly above you. For a first Himalayan walk, that is a lot of reward for one day of effort.

It also fits awkward schedules. You can build it into a short Dharamshala holiday without giving up days to a multi-day itinerary, which is why it works for couples, friend groups and travellers combining it with McLeod Ganj sightseeing.

Some people should pick a different walk. If you want solitude, this is not it, particularly on spring and autumn weekends when the daily cap is reached. If you are travelling in July or August, the odds are against you for both views and comfortable ground. If you have knee trouble, the descent is the part that will hurt, not the climb. And if you are hoping specifically to camp on the ridge, understand that camping is capped and conditional, so build a plan that still works if permission is not available.

Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot and where the walk begins

This is where most online information goes wrong, and it causes real problems on the ground.

Dharamshala is the lower administrative town and transport junction. It is the broad destination name and the district reference point, but almost nobody starts walking from there.

McLeod Ganj sits above it and is the practical base for most trekkers. Accommodation, food, taxis and shops are here.

Dharamkot is a quieter village above McLeod Ganj, closer to the trailhead. Staying here shortens your morning approach.

Bhagsu or Bhagsunag is another village above McLeod Ganj, known for the waterfall. Some operators route walkers through Bhagsu.

Gallu, or the Gallu Devi temple area, is the roadhead above Dharamkot and the point where the forest checkpost and the main walking route begin.

So when a page says “Triund is 17 km from Dharamshala”, that is a road distance to the area, not a walk. When another says “9 km”, that is usually a walking distance measured from McLeod Ganj including the road and village sections. And “5.5 km” is the walk from Gallu once you have driven up. All three can be correct and describe completely different days. Ask which one a quoted figure refers to before you plan around it.

For planning purposes, we treat the walk as starting at the Gallu Devi roadhead, and we treat the drive up from McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot as a transfer rather than part of the trek.

Route variants and starting points

From Gallu Devi temple. The standard and shortest option. You drive up from McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot, register at the checkpost, and walk from there. Roughly 5 to 6 km one way with the great majority of the climb ahead of you. Best for a day walk, families, and anyone who wants to be back before dark.

On foot from McLeod Ganj via Dharamkot. Adds the road and village section under your own steam, giving the commonly quoted 9 km one way. Worth doing only if you are fit, starting very early, and want the extra walking. It lengthens an already long day.

Via Bhagsu or Bhagsunag. Some groups approach from Bhagsu and join the main route higher up. It is used commercially, and it can be combined with the waterfall. Confirm current access and where registration happens if you take this line, because it does not necessarily pass the same checkpost.

Beyond Triund. The ground continues upward towards the snowline area and, well beyond that, towards Indrahar Pass. That is a serious multi-day undertaking, not an extension of a day walk, and should not be attempted casually off the back of a Triund trip.

The route, stage by stage

McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot to Gallu. A short drive on a narrow hill road. Parking near the roadhead is limited and fills early on busy mornings.

Gallu Devi temple and the checkpost. Registration and fee payment happen here. Keep your receipt for the whole walk, both directions.

The forest section. The path climbs steadily through mixed oak, deodar and rhododendron. This is the pleasant part: shaded, well used, and easy to follow. The Kangra district administration describes the walk as fairly easy for roughly the first five kilometres, which matches how most people experience it. A few informal chai points operate along here, seasonally.

The open section and the final climb. The trees thin and the ground opens out. The last kilometre or so is the hard part, a switchbacking climb known locally as the 22 curves. It is steeper, more exposed to sun and wind, and it is where most people slow down considerably. Pace yourself before you reach it rather than during it.

The ridge at Triund. Open grass, with the Kangra Valley on one side and the Dhauladhar wall on the other. Cloud frequently builds here through the afternoon, so an early arrival gives you a better chance of seeing anything.

The return. Most walkers descend the same way. Allow 2 to 3 hours, more in wet conditions, and start down with enough daylight in hand. The descent is where tired legs and loose footing cause most of the minor injuries on this route.

Triund Trek distance explained

The single most confusing number on this route. Here is how the Triund Trek distance breaks down depending on where you actually begin walking.

Measured from

One way

Return

Notes

Gallu Devi roadhead

About 5 to 6 km

About 11 to 12 km

The walk most day trekkers actually do

McLeod Ganj on foot

About 9 km

About 18 km

Includes road and village sections below Gallu

Dharamshala town

Not a walking figure

—

Around 17 km by road to the area; a drive, not a trek

Two rules will save you trouble. First, check whether a number is one way or return, because a “9 km trek” and an “18 km day” are very different commitments. Second, check where it starts. A page quoting 5.5 km and a page quoting 9 km are usually both accurate and simply measuring from different points.

Distance is also the least useful predictor of how hard the day feels. The climb, the final steep section and the descent matter more, which is the subject of the next few sections.

Day walk or overnight

The day walk. The default and, for most travellers, the sensible choice. Start early, ideally leaving your accommodation before the checkpost opens for the day so you are walking by mid-morning at the latest. Carry water, food and a rain layer. Reach the ridge, rest, and start down with a firm turnaround time rather than an aspiration. Requires no camping permission, only registration and entry. Hotel nights: one before, optionally one after. Luggage stays at your accommodation and you carry a daypack.

The overnight. Attractive, but conditional. Camping on the ridge is regulated and capped rather than open to anyone who arrives with a tent, and the arrangements changed during 2026. Treat an overnight as something to confirm before you commit to it, not something to assume. If it is available and you are allocated a place, you will need warmer layers than the daytime temperature suggests, since the ridge is cold after dark in every season.

Do not plan a late start in order to reach the ridge for sunset, or a pre-dawn start to catch sunrise, unless you have verified permission and appropriate guiding. Walking this route in the dark, particularly the descent, is how avoidable accidents happen. Sunrise and sunset from the ridge are genuinely good when they happen, but neither can be promised and neither is worth improvising a night walk for.

A practical middle path: build one flexible day into your Dharamshala itinerary. If the weather is poor or the overnight is not available, you still have the day walk, and if conditions are bad enough you have a spare day for a lower alternative.

Triund Trek difficulty

Triund Trek difficulty is usually described as easy to moderate, and in dry spring or autumn conditions with an early start that is fair. It needs no technical skill, no rope, no scrambling, and the path is well used and easy to follow. But short does not automatically mean easy, and the honest picture depends on conditions.

What makes it manageable: a well-trodden path, a steady rather than brutal gradient for most of the way, low enough altitude that acclimatisation is not usually a factor, and a base town close enough that help is not far away.

What makes it harder than people expect: roughly a thousand metres of climbing, concentrated unevenly, with the steepest section saved for the end when you are already tired. The 22 curves defeat more first-timers than the forest section ever does. The descent is longer and more tiring than most people plan for, and it is harder on knees than the climb.

How conditions change it:

In rain or monsoon, the forest section becomes slippery, rock and root underfoot get treacherous, visibility drops, and the day stops being fun.

In snow or ice, the difficulty rises sharply. The final section in particular becomes a different problem needing traction devices and, for most people, a guide.

With a late start, you compress the descent into failing light, which is the single most common planning mistake on this route.

With an overnight pack, add meaningful effort to the climb, especially on the final section.

On crowded days, the narrow steeper sections slow everyone down, so build in extra time.

Who should think twice: anyone with significant knee or ankle problems, anyone unable to walk several hours continuously on an incline, and anyone whose only available dates fall in peak monsoon. If you have a heart, lung or joint condition, or you are unsure whether this level of exertion is appropriate for you, speak to a qualified doctor before you book. That is a conversation for a medical professional, not for a travel company.

Fitness and preparation

You do not need to be an athlete, but a few weeks of preparation changes the day completely.

Build up to walking continuously for two to three hours without needing a long rest. Add incline work: stairs, a slope near home, or a treadmill gradient. Do some of that walking with the daypack you intend to carry, loaded roughly as it will be on the day, because pack weight on the shoulders is a different sensation from an unweighted walk.

Give some attention to the descent specifically. Downhill walking loads the knees and quads in a way that flat walking does not, and it is the descent that leaves people sore for days afterwards. Light leg strength work and controlled downhill practice help more than extra cardio.

Break in your footwear before you travel. New boots on this route will produce blisters on the descent. Sleep properly the night before, eat breakfast, and start hydrated rather than trying to catch up on the climb.

Altitude

Triund sits at roughly 2,830 to 2,850 metres, with the walk starting somewhere around 1,900 to 2,100 metres depending on your trailhead. That is around a thousand metres of gain in a single push.

For most healthy people this altitude does not require a formal acclimatisation programme, which is one reason the route suits beginners. But travellers arriving directly from Delhi or the plains a day or two earlier often notice the climb more than they expect. Breathlessness on the steeper sections is normal. Headache, nausea, unusual dizziness or a marked loss of coordination are not, and they are reasons to stop climbing.

If those symptoms appear and do not settle with rest, water and food, the correct response is to descend. Descending is the reliable remedy. Do not push on to the ridge on the assumption that it will pass. We do not advise on altitude medication; if you have a history of altitude problems or a relevant medical condition, discuss it with a qualified doctor before your trip.

Best time and seasonal conditions

Season

Conditions

Suitability

March to May

Firm ground, cool mornings, snow possible high up early in the season, rhododendron in flower. Cold on the ridge after dark.

The strongest window overall. Good for first-timers and families.

June

Warmer, hazier, cloud building earlier in the day. Busy.

Workable with a very early start.

July to August

Peak monsoon. Heavy rain, slippery forest, mud, low cloud and frequently no view at all.

The weakest window. Consider rescheduling or a lower alternative.

September to November

Air clears after the monsoon, ground firms up, visibility is usually at its best, nights get cold quickly.

The other strong window, and the best for clear conditions.

December to February

Cold, with snow and ice likely on the upper route. Shorter daylight.

For prepared walkers with traction equipment and, for most people, a guide.

Two honest caveats. Clear mountain views cannot be promised in any month, since cloud on the Dhauladhar builds fast and often. And no month guarantees the route is open, because weather events, forest work and administrative decisions can all close it at short notice.

At the time of writing, late July, the Dharamshala area is in the middle of the monsoon with a high daily chance of rain. If those are your only dates, plan for wet ground and limited views, and keep a lower-level alternative in reserve.

Snow and winter

Snow generally arrives on the upper part of the route from around December and can persist into early spring, though timing varies year to year and cannot be predicted for fixed dates.

Two distinctions matter. Fresh snowfall is soft, hides the path and makes route-finding harder. Settled and refrozen snow becomes ice, particularly on the steep final section and on shaded parts of the forest path, and ice is the greater hazard of the two. Snow at the ridge does not mean snow at the roadhead, and you can start a walk on bare ground and reach ice higher up.

Snow slows everything down. A four-hour ascent can become considerably longer, which pushes your descent towards dusk. In winter conditions you want proper insulated footwear with grip, traction devices such as microspikes when there is ice, warm layers well beyond what the valley temperature suggests, and a guide unless you have genuine winter walking experience.

Road access to the roadhead can also be affected after heavy snowfall, which may mean walking further from lower down or postponing entirely. We cannot promise snow on any given date, and a snow-covered ridge is never something to build a trip around.

Monsoon and weather

July and August bring sustained rain to the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar. The forest section becomes slippery, rock and root are unreliable underfoot, and mud makes the descent tiring and awkward. Cloud typically sits on the ridge, so the view that justifies the walk is often simply absent.

Thunderstorms are a real consideration. An open grass ridge is not where you want to be during one, and afternoon build-up is common. That alone is an argument for early starts and firm turnaround times in the warmer months.

Heavy rain also affects the approach. Hill roads in the area are vulnerable to landslides and blockages during the monsoon, and access to the roadhead can change at short notice. Build buffer time into monsoon travel plans and accept that a day may be lost.

If you are on the walk and conditions deteriorate, turning back is the correct decision, not a failed trip. The ridge will still be there. We would rather move your plan than have you push through weather that has already turned.

Entry rules, registration and Triund Trek camping

This is the section where most online information about Triund is out of date, and where getting it wrong can cost you a fine or a wasted trip.

What is currently in place. Registration at the forest checkpost in the Gallu area is required before you start walking. An entry fee applies per person, and you must keep the receipt with you, as it is checked. Trekking without a valid receipt attracts a substantial fine. Camping on the ridge is permitted only in a regulated and capped form, with a separate charge, rather than being open to anyone who carries a tent. Local rights-holders are exempt from the charges.

What has changed and why the confusion exists. Overnight camping at Triund was heavily restricted around 2019 after unregulated camping and construction damaged the meadow, and a large volume of blog content still online dates from that period and states flatly that camping is banned. Subsequently, following High Court–driven regulation, a managed regime was introduced with a checkpost at Gallu, a cap on daily trekker numbers, a small limit on tents and overnight visitors, and fees that were later revised. During 2026 the management of the route was tendered to a private operator, with the Forest Department retaining control of the fee schedule and stating that operators cannot raise rates independently.

What this means for you. Any specific figure you read online, including on this page, has a shelf life. Fees, caps and the identity of the operator have all changed within recent memory. Confirm the current entry fee, the current tenting charge, whether the daily cap applies on your date, and the checkpost operating hours before you travel.

Also expect the following to apply: carry government photo identity; carry your waste back down with you; avoid single-use plastic; stay on the established path; observe fire restrictions strictly, as this is a forest area; do not assume drones are permitted; and follow instructions from forest staff and checkpost personnel without argument. Group size restrictions and guide requirements may apply in particular conditions or seasons.

Getting to the base and the trailhead

To Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. By road, Dharamshala is roughly 480 to 500 km from Delhi, typically an overnight journey by bus or car. HRTC and private operators run services; timings and fares change by season and should be checked when booking rather than assumed. The nearest airport is Gaggal, close to Dharamshala, with flights from Delhi that are prone to weather cancellation in monsoon and winter. The nearest major railhead is Pathankot, with onward road transfer of roughly three hours.

Up to the trailhead. From McLeod Ganj it is a short drive to Dharamkot and on to the Gallu Devi roadhead. Local taxis and shared vehicles operate this stretch. The road is narrow and steep, and it is not a comfortable self-drive for anyone unused to hill roads.

Parking. Limited near the roadhead and it fills early in peak season. If you are driving yourself, arriving early matters for parking as much as for daylight.

Timing your day. Aim to be walking by mid-morning at the very latest, and earlier in summer. Confirm checkpost hours in advance, because arriving after they close can mean you cannot register and therefore cannot legally start. Give yourself buffer time for traffic in McLeod Ganj, which congests badly in season.

Fuel and ATMs are more reliable in McLeod Ganj and Dharamshala than in the villages above, so sort both out before you head up.

Where to stay

McLeod Ganj is the practical base for most travellers, with the widest choice of accommodation, food and transport.

Dharamkot puts you closer to the trailhead and is quieter, which suits an early start.

Bhagsu is another option above McLeod Ganj.

Lower Dharamshala is convenient for transport connections but adds distance to your morning.

Whichever you choose, the things worth confirming with your property before booking are an early breakfast or packed breakfast, luggage storage while you walk, hot water on your return, heating in the colder months, and whether a late arrival is acceptable if your inbound journey runs behind.

We do not name specific properties on this page. Accommodation is confirmed as part of a written quotation, so you know exactly what has been booked.

Food, water and toilets

There are informal chai and snack points along the forest section, and the Kangra district description of the route mentions small shops where walkers stop. They are seasonal and informal. Some operate in peak months and not otherwise, and none of them should be treated as guaranteed.

The practical approach is to carry what you need. Bring enough water for the full round trip, or a means of purifying what you find, and carry your own food including something for the descent. Vegetarian options are easy to arrange in advance through your accommodation or as a packed meal; specific dietary requirements should be flagged before the day rather than on the morning.

Toilet facilities on the route are limited and basic. Plan accordingly before you set off. Whatever you carry up, carry back down, including wrappers, bottles and food waste. Food waste left on the ridge attracts animals and degrades the meadow, which is precisely what led to restrictions in the first place.

Network and practical facilities

Mobile coverage varies by network, by weather and by exact position on the route. Some networks work on parts of the ridge and not in the forest below; others do the opposite. Do not plan around having a signal at any specific point.

Download offline maps before you start, carry a power bank, and agree a check-in plan with someone not on the walk. Charging points on the route should not be assumed. Digital payment acceptance is inconsistent above McLeod Ganj, so carry enough cash for entry fees, transfers and food. ATMs, pharmacies and a proper market are all more reliable in McLeod Ganj and Dharamshala than higher up.

Medical facilities near the trailhead are limited. Anything beyond very basic first aid means descending to Dharamshala. Emergency communication on parts of the route may be limited or absent, and any rescue or evacuation depends entirely on weather, your location, access and the resources available at that moment. It cannot be promised, and that is exactly why early starts and conservative turnaround decisions matter so much on a route that otherwise feels casual.

What to pack for Triund Trek

Essential

Broken-in trekking shoes with ankle support and real grip; two pairs of proper walking socks; a daypack with a rain cover; at least two litres of water or a refillable equivalent; food and snacks for the full day; a warm layer for the ridge regardless of season; a waterproof jacket; sun protection including cream, sunglasses and a cap; a headlamp with spare batteries; government photo identity; your entry receipt kept safe; personal medication; basic first aid including blister treatment; a bag for your own waste.

Season dependent

Rain trousers and a pack cover in monsoon; gloves, a warm hat and heavier insulation in winter; microspikes or similar traction devices when ice is present; gaiters in snow or deep mud; extra insulation for any permitted overnight, since the ridge is far colder after dark than the day suggests.

Optional but useful

Trekking poles, which make a real difference on the descent; a power bank; a lightweight sit mat; a small towel.

Normally supplied on a guided arrangement

Guide, group first aid, and route coordination.

Requires written confirmation

Camping equipment, meals and packed food, entry fees and registration handling, trailhead transfers, and any equipment rental. Get these listed explicitly in your quotation rather than assumed.

Not usually required

Technical climbing equipment, rope, or high-altitude mountaineering gear. If someone is telling you that you need those for Triund, ask why.

Safety and responsible walking

Start early. Almost every problem on this route traces back to a late start. Early means a better chance of a view, cooler walking, and daylight in hand for the descent.

Set a turnaround time before you leave and keep it. Decide the hour at which you will turn back regardless of how close the ridge looks. Ridges always look closer than they are.

Respect the weather. If cloud drops, rain sets in or a storm builds, go down. An open ridge in a thunderstorm is a bad place to be.

Stay together and stay on the path. Groups separate when the fast walkers push ahead, and that is when people get lost or hurt without help nearby. Keep the slowest walker’s pace as the group’s pace.

Do not improvise night walking. Descending this route in the dark is genuinely risky, and it is not worth a photograph.

Consider travel insurance that covers trekking, and understand what it does and does not include before you rely on it.

Follow instructions from forest staff and checkpost personnel. They close routes and turn people back for reasons, and arguing with them is neither useful nor wise.

On responsible walking: carry all your waste back down, avoid single-use plastic, stay on the established path rather than cutting corners on the switchbacks, observe fire restrictions absolutely, camp only where and when it is permitted, do not play loud music, do not disturb grazing livestock or wildlife, and treat the villages you pass through as people’s homes rather than scenery. Triund’s restrictions exist because visitors damaged the meadow. Whether it stays open, and on what terms, depends on how the next few seasons of visitors behave.

Who this trek suits

First-time trekkers with reasonable fitness. A good introduction, provided you start early and pick a decent season.

Couples and friend groups. Works well, especially combined with McLeod Ganj.

Families. Realistic with older children who already enjoy long walks. Younger children, or any group moving at a slow pace, should plan a longer day, more rest stops, and a willingness to turn back partway. Reaching the ridge is not compulsory for the day to be worthwhile.

Older travellers. Depends entirely on the individual. Many manage it comfortably at their own pace. The descent is usually the deciding factor, not the climb.

Solo travellers. Common on this route, and it is well used enough that you will rarely be alone in season. Off season, in poor weather or in snow, solo walking is a different proposition and a guide is worth serious consideration.

Corporate and photography groups. Feasible, but group size affects pace and may affect permissions, so it needs planning rather than improvisation.

Some people will benefit from a private guide, a slower two-part plan, a trailhead transfer instead of walking from McLeod Ganj, an extra night before the walk to arrive rested, or a lower alternative walk altogether. There is no universal age limit on this route, and we would not invent one. What matters is honest self-assessment of fitness, joints and recent walking experience, and a medical opinion where there is any doubt.

Choosing a Triund plan

Most enquiries we receive about Triund come down to three questions: whether to do it in a day or attempt an overnight, whether to walk from McLeod Ganj or transfer up to the roadhead, and whether to walk independently or with a guide. The right answer depends on your dates, your season, your group’s fitness and what else you want to see around Dharamshala.

Before comparing options, it helps to be clear on the day walk versus overnight decision and the current camping position, pickup point from Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj, whether a trailhead transfer is included, guide arrangements, how entry fees and registration are handled, accommodation, meals and packed lunch, any equipment, private versus group departure, group size, and seasonal access on your specific dates.

Tell us your dates and group and we will tell you honestly what is realistic, including if the answer is that your dates are poorly suited to this walk.

Whatever you choose, get the following confirmed in writing before you pay: pickup and drop points, trailhead transfer, guide arrangement, who pays and handles the entry fee and registration, meals and packed lunch, accommodation details, camping arrangements and what happens if permission is unavailable, equipment provided, taxes, insurance position, cancellation terms, the alternative if weather forces a change, the alternative if the route or a variant is closed, what happens if overnight rules change after booking, and the stated exclusions covering emergencies, rescue and evacuation. A quotation that leaves these vague is a quotation worth questioning.

What affects the cost

Your dates and season, since spring and autumn weekends price differently from a quiet weekday. Public holidays and long weekends. Group size, since per-person costs fall as numbers rise. Whether you want a private arrangement or are willing to join a group. Guide requirements, including whether conditions call for one. Entry fees and registration charges, which are set by the Forest Department and are not something an operator sets. Transport to the trailhead and your pickup point. Vehicle type. Accommodation standard and location. Meals and packed food. Camping charges where camping is permitted and allocated. Equipment rental. Whether you want a day walk or an overnight. Taxes. Insurance. Any customisation, and any Dharamshala sightseeing you add around the walk.

We have deliberately not printed a price on this page. Fees on this route changed during 2026 and the live HimTrails inventory is the only accurate source for current package pricing.

To get a realistic quotation quickly, tell us your travel dates, how many people, their ages, any previous trekking experience, your pickup location, how many days you have available, whether you want a day walk or would like us to check overnight availability, whether you prefer a private or group arrangement, your accommodation preference, any dietary requirements, and what else in Dharamshala you would like to see.

Combining Triund with a Dharamshala trip

Triund fits neatly into a short Dharamshala holiday, which is much of its appeal.

Before the walk, McLeod Ganj itself, the monastery complex and the Tibetan cultural sites make an easy arrival day that also lets you rest before an early start.

After the walk, keep it gentle. Bhagsu waterfall, cafés and the market suit tired legs better than another climb.

In a short trip, two to three nights in the area covers the walk plus the main sights without rushing.

Needing more nights: Kangra Fort, the Masroor rock temples, or Bir Billing, all of which deserve their own day rather than being squeezed around a trek day.

Would make it rushed: attempting Triund and a second longer trek such as Kareri Lake in the same short trip, or trying to add Dalhousie or Chamba onto a two-night Dharamshala stay.

For the wider area, our Dharamshala travel guide covers the town, McLeod Ganj and the main sights, and our Dharamshala tour packages show how the walk fits into a longer holiday. If you are comparing this against other options, the treks in Himachal Pradesh hub and the Himachal trek map put it in context.

Planning with HimTrails

We are based in Shimla and we plan trips across Himachal, including the Dharamshala area. What we offer on this route is straightforward: an honest read on whether it suits your group, a check on current route and camping rules rather than repeating what a blog said three years ago, realistic timing rather than optimistic timing, help with trailhead transfers and guide arrangements, guidance on entry and registration, accommodation planning around an early start, written inclusions so you know what you have paid for, and a sensible alternative if the weather turns.

We will also tell you when the answer is no. If your dates fall in peak monsoon, if your group’s fitness does not match the day, or if what you actually want is a quiet walk rather than a popular one, we would rather say so and suggest something else than sell you a disappointing day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Triund Trek?

          <line x1="6" y1="1" x2="6" y2="11"></line><line x1="1" y1="6" x2="11" y2="6"></line>

Triund is an open grassy ridge at about 2,830 to 2,850 m on the Dhauladhar range in Kangra district, reached by a few hours’ walk from above McLeod Ganj.
