IMD forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy spells from 1 to 4 July 2026, with peak intensity on 2 and 3 July 2026.

On 1 July 2026, The Indian Express reported that the monsoon had covered the entire state, and IMD warned tourists to stay away from landslide-prone areas, rivers, streams and nullahs during intense rain.

Live road status you need to check before you drive

Road status in the high mountains is time-sensitive. Everything below is from the Lahaul-Spiti official road page, last updated 24 June 2026, and must be verified again right before travel.

Delhi to Manali: Open as of that update.

Manali to Keylong: Open as of that update.

Here is how fast this can change. On 30 June 2026, Times of India reported that traffic was restored near Jhalma Nallah on the Manali-Leh highway after a flash flood damaged the road and stranded more than 50 tourist vehicles.

Spiti Valley

Spiti is one of the smartest July choices. It sits in a rain-shadow region and gets far less monsoon rain than the lower hills.

The StayVista July estimate for Spiti is a daytime 20°C to 25°C and a night of 5°C to 10°C. Warm sun, cold nights, dry air.

The catch is access. Official road status showed Keylong to Kaza closed as of 24 June 2026, which affects the Manali side.

Because of that, we recommend entering Spiti from the Shimla and Kinnaur side in July, and only after the road status is confirmed.

Kinnaur

Kinnaur in July is dramatic. Deep valleys, the Sutlej roaring below, and the apple belt heavy with fruit before harvest.

Lean into indoor and covered plans. Monasteries, cafes, short local drives, the Tibetan market lanes.

Pick one base and stay put. Do short local walks instead of hopping between valleys on wet, single-lane roads.

Places to Avoid or Think Twice About in July

Some plans just do not fit the monsoon. Skip remote treks and unknown forest trails, where a sudden downpour can leave you exposed.

Avoid riverside camping. Water levels rise fast and quietly at night, and a calm river at 8 PM can be a different thing by 2 AM.

Do not take Google Maps shortcuts through narrow village roads after heavy rain. These are the roads that wash out first.

And drop the very tight weekend itineraries from Delhi. A single landslide can eat your entire return day.

Outdoor activities like trekking, camping, rafting and paragliding may be restricted or unsafe during heavy rain. Check locally on the day, and do not assume an operator running a trip means it is safe.

Can You Visit Manali, Rohtang and Atal Tunnel in July?

You can, with the right paperwork and a close eye on the weather. Here is the permit reality, kept simple.

Rohtang Pass permit rules

The Rohtang tourism permit is valid for one day, to and fro. You cannot stretch it across two days.

To apply, you need valid ID proof, a valid PUC certificate and the vehicle registration date.

The daily quota is 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles, so it runs out. Permit application windows open at 10:00 hrs and 16:00 hrs.

You can get only 3 permits per vehicle per week, and you can apply only for the next 2 days from the current date. A printout is compulsory for all permissions.

The permit fee for a car, jeep or MUV is ₹500, with a ₹50 congestion charge on top.

Manali green tax

If your vehicle is not registered in Himachal Pradesh, you pay a green tax to enter Manali. It is valid for 7 days.

The rates are ₹100 for a bike, ₹200 for an LMV, ₹300 for a passenger vehicle and ₹500 for a goods vehicle.

For the Atal Tunnel and Sissu side, the live road status must be checked locally before you drive. In July, that stretch can open and close with the rain.
