Is the Manali Route the Right Way to Start Your Spiti Trip?
The Manali route works when Kunzum Pass is open and you can absorb one very long mountain road day. It is the shortcut — not automatically the comfortable choice.
Choose the Manali route when:
- You are travelling between mid-June and mid-October
- You have at least five or six nights, ideally more
- You are comfortable with 9–12 hours on rough mountain road
- You want a private cab, fixed group departure, or a full circuit
- You accept that Chandratal Lake access is conditional
- You can keep a buffer day for weather
Choose the Kinnaur route when:
- Kunzum Pass is closed or uncertain
- You are travelling in winter (Nov–Mar)
- You want gradual altitude gain over 3 days
- You want Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul, Nako and Tabo included
- You are travelling with children or older parents
- You prefer starting from Shimla or Chandigarh

Not every Spiti package can begin in Manali. A package that ends in Manali is not a Manali-pickup package — confirm the start point in writing.
Choose the Right Manali to Spiti Package Format
Private Cab From Manali
The most flexible format for couples, families and small groups. Innova Crysta, Scorpio or equivalent with a Himachali driver who has done the Batal run repeatedly. You control departure time, break stops and photo halts. Best for family trips and honeymoon couples.
Shared Group Departure

Tempo Traveller for Larger Groups
Workable for 10–14 travellers if luggage is controlled and the road is dry. Comfort breaks add 1–2 hours to the Manali–Kaza day.
One-Way Manali to Kaza Transfer
A transfer is not a tour. If you book only the vehicle, you separately arrange Kaza stays, local sightseeing, return transport, meals and Chandratal. Never compare a transfer price against a full package price.
Full Spiti Circuit From Manali
Enter via Kunzum Pass, exit via Tabo → Nako → Kalpa → Shimla. No road repeated, wider landscape range. Many first-timers reverse it — Shimla in, Manali out — for gentler acclimatisation.
The Manali to Kaza Route Explained, Stop by Stop
Manali → Atal Tunnel
Early start (5:00–6:00 AM). Traffic builds around Solang and the tunnel mouth on weekends. A late departure pushes the water crossings into afternoon peak flow — the worst possible timing.
Gramphu — The Turn Towards Spiti
After the tunnel, the road forks. Left goes to Keylong and Leh; right drops you onto the Spiti road. From Gramphu, services effectively end. No fuel, no workshops, patchy-to-zero mobile network.
Chhatru, Chhota Dara and Batal
The roughest 80 km in the valley. Gravel, boulders, and live nallah crossings fed by glacier melt. Chandratal Dhaba at Batal serves hot food and chai in season. Toilets are basic.
Kunzum Pass (15,060 ft)
The gateway between Lahaul and Spiti. Complete one clockwise parikrama of the chorten. Kunzum Pass is seasonal — it opens roughly mid-June and closes mid-October, and BRO can shut it temporarily even in peak season. Never book a fixed Manali–Kaza date without checking current status.
Losar → Kaza
Losar is the first Spiti village. Kaza arrives 2 hours later. Keep the first evening light — no sightseeing, hydrate, eat simple food, sleep early.

Manali Pickup and Arrival Planning
Hotel Pickup in Manali
Possible in most areas. Narrow lanes in Old Manali, Vashisht and the Mall Road bazaar may require you to walk to an accessible road point. Share your hotel name at booking.
Pickup From Volvo / Bus Drop Points
Provide operator name, scheduled arrival, drop location and a backup contact. Do not book a same-morning Kaza departure off an overnight Volvo without a buffer — mountain buses run late.
Pickup From Kullu or Bhuntar Airport
Bhuntar Airport is 50 km from Manali and is not included in standard Manali pickup. Request it in advance; it is quoted as an add-on transfer.
Naggar and Patlikuhal
Possible on some routes but not assumed. Confirm in the quotation.

Most control, best for families and photographers. Ground clearance matters more than 4×4.
Shared SUV
Cheapest per-head option. Fixed schedule, fixed stops.
HRTC Bus (Seasonal)
An HRTC service runs Manali–Kaza when the road opens, but timings change year to year. You then arrange Kaza stays and sightseeing yourself.
Self-Drive
Only for experienced mountain drivers. High ground clearance essential. Never drive this road at night.
Spiti Bike Trip From Manali

EV Travel
Not advisable. Charging infrastructure past Gramphu is effectively nonexistent.
Altitude and Acclimatisation on the Manali Approach
Manali sits at ~2,050 m. Kaza is at ~3,800 m. Kunzum Pass tops out at 4,551 m. That is a fast climb by any standard.
- Keep arrival day light. No Komic, no Hikkim, no long walks on Day 1 in Kaza.
- Hydrate. 4+ litres a day. No alcohol for the first 48 hours.
- Every HimTrails vehicle carries an oxygen cylinder.
- Diamox — consult your doctor before the trip.
- Report headache, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness to your driver immediately. Descending is always the right call.
Families and older travellers should strongly consider the Kinnaur approach, which gains altitude across Kalpa (2,960 m) and Nako (3,662 m) before Kaza.

Kunzum Pass and Chandratal Lake Access — Two Separate Checks
Is Kunzum Pass open year-round?
No. It is seasonal, roughly mid-June to mid-October, and BRO can close it temporarily even during the season.
Is Chandratal Lake included in every package?
No. Kunzum Pass being open does not mean the Chandratal road or its camps are operating. The 13 km approach from Batal is the roughest stretch in Himachal.
If Chandratal is inaccessible, we substitute: an extra Kaza night, Pin Valley, Tabo + Dhankar, or a Lahaul stay — with the cost implication told to you before any decision.

Food, Network, Cash and Practical Facilities
- Food: Simple past Gramphu. Thukpa, thenthuk, momos, dal-chawal, Maggi. Jain meals need advance notice. Carry snacks.
- Network: BSNL is the only SIM that works reliably. Jio and Airtel drop past Losar. Download offline maps in Manali.
- Cash: SBI Kaza is the only ATM — and it’s often offline. Carry cash from Manali.
- Fuel: Last reliable pump before Kaza is in Manali. Kaza and Tabo are the only pumps inside Spiti.
- Medical: Basic help in Kaza only. Carry prescribed medication.
- Permits: Indians need none for the main circuit. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit — HimTrails arranges it.
