Both are correct. Which one is right depends on how many leave days you actually have, what month you are travelling, and whether you want the journey to be the holiday or just the way to reach it.

Planning a Leh Ladakh Trip From Delhi: The Quick Answer
A Delhi to Ladakh trip can begin with a direct flight to Leh, or a multi-day road journey through Manali or Srinagar. Flying is the fastest route. The road routes are seasonal and need more days.
For a first flight-based trip covering Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, six to seven days is the practical minimum — not four or five, whatever a compressed itinerary elsewhere may promise. Leh sits at 11,562 feet. Delhi sits at 216 feet. Your body does not negotiate.
Before you book any package, check exactly four things:
- Where the package actually starts — Delhi, Manali, Srinagar, or Leh Airport
- Whether Delhi airfare or road travel is included — most “Delhi packages” are land packages
- Whether Leh Airport pickup is included
- How much acclimatisation time is built into the first 48 hours

Is Leh Ladakh the Right Trip for You From Delhi?
Ladakh is not a longer version of a Shimla weekend. It is a cold desert plateau at altitude, with long drives, thin air and weather that changes the plan without consulting you.
Ladakh suits you if you:
- Can keep at least six or seven days for a flight-based trip
- Are comfortable with early starts and 5–6 hour sightseeing drives
- Accept that road access can change the itinerary mid-trip
- Prefer covering fewer places properly over ticking off every lake
- Want monasteries, high passes, remote valleys and open landscape
Consider a different destination if you have only two or three days, cannot manage long road travel, or have a health condition that makes high altitude unwise. A Manali tour package or Shimla tour package may serve you far better on a short break.

A private package gives you control over rest stops and pace. A shared departure lowers the per-person transport cost but locks you into fixed timings.
How to Reach Leh Ladakh From Delhi
There are four practical routes:
- Fly Delhi → Leh, return by flight
- Delhi → Manali → Leh by road
- Delhi → Srinagar → Leh by road
- Combine flight and road — fly in, drive out (or the reverse)
Delhi to Leh by Flight
A direct Delhi to Leh flight takes roughly one hour and fifteen to twenty minutes in the air. Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport (IXL) receives daily direct flights from Delhi, mostly landing in the morning — Leh gets strong afternoon winds, and post-noon flights are cancelled far more often than travellers expect.
The real planning issue is not the flight. It is what happens after you land. Delhi to Leh is a gain of over 11,000 feet in 80 minutes. Keep the arrival day light. Hotel, rest, water, a simple meal, maybe a slow walk to the bazaar in the evening. Nothing else.
A flight-based plan suits:
- Couples with limited leave
- Families avoiding multiple road transit days
- Travellers joining a group already in Leh
- Anyone wanting the core Leh + Nubra + Pangong circuit
- Winter travellers, when both road approaches are normally shut
Confirm before booking: whether airfare is included, whether Leh Airport pickup is included, hotel early check-in arrangement, how days 1 and 2 are planned, what happens if your flight is delayed, and whether your return flight sits immediately after a remote sightseeing day.
Keep buffer time before any important work commitment or onward connection. Leh flights get cancelled for weather more than any other Indian route.
Delhi to Leh Through Manali
The Manali to Leh road trip from Delhi is for travellers who want the journey itself to be the holiday.
A typical routing runs Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi → Kullu → मनाली, then onward through the Atal Tunnel, Keylong or Jispa, Sarchu, the high passes, More Plains, Tanglang La and Upshi into Leh. The highway crosses Baralacha La, Nakee La, Lachulung La and Tanglang La — four passes above 15,000 feet.
This is a seasonal highway, typically open around June to October. Opening and closing dates change every year with snow clearance and BRO decisions. Temporary closures happen even mid-season. Check current status on the Border Roads Organisation site before departure.
What the route actually involves:
- Long driving days, 8–10 hours on some sections
- Remote stretches with almost no services
- Rapid altitude gain after Himachal
- Snow, ice, water crossings and road work
- Limited flexibility when access changes
Do not attempt Manali to Leh in one continuous push. Plan an overnight halt — Jispa or Keylong is usually a more sensible sleeping altitude than Sarchu, particularly for families and first-timers.
Self-drive and motorcycle travellers need genuine mountain experience, a suitable vehicle, valid documents and a backup plan.
Delhi to Leh Through Srinagar
The Srinagar to Leh highway route approaches Ladakh through Kashmir and the west. You can reach Srinagar from Delhi by flight, by train plus road, or by a long road journey.
The onward drive runs through Sonamarg, Zoji La, Drass, Kargil, Mulbekh and Lamayuru into Leh — roughly 420 km with a mandatory overnight halt at Kargil. It is generally open longer in the season than the Manali approach, but it is still seasonal.
The Srinagar route gives a more gradual altitude gain than either flying directly to Leh or climbing hard through the Manali passes. That helps many travellers adjust more comfortably. It does not make altitude sickness impossible.
The Srinagar approach suits:
- First-time road travellers with enough days
- Families wanting a gentler climb
- Travellers who want Kargil, Drass and Lamayuru
- Anyone combining Kashmir with Ladakh
- Groups entering via Srinagar and exiting via Manali
Road and security conditions should be checked before departure. Traffic controls at Zoji La can change your day plan without notice.

Complete Ladakh Circuit Options From Delhi
When both highways are open and you have the days, a full circuit is the most complete way to see Ladakh.
Enter Through Srinagar, Return Through Manali
The most sensible direction for altitude. You climb gradually through Kargil into Leh, and after Ladakh you descend towards Sarchu, Jispa and Manali before returning to Delhi. Still needs pacing — but it front-loads the gentle part.
Enter Through Manali, Return Through Srinagar
Suits groups already starting in Himachal, or seasons when the Manali side is the better operational route. The climb to the passes is demanding and must not be compressed.
Fly Into Leh, Return by Road
Saves days at the start but demands proper acclimatisation after landing. Complete Leh, Nubra and Pangong, then exit by Manali or Srinagar.
Enter by Road, Fly Out of Leh
The gradual approach, without the return fatigue. Often the best compromise for travellers with 8–9 days.
Adding Tso Moriri, Hanle, Turtuk or Umling La adds remote driving days — include them only if the route stays practical.
Delhi and NCR Pickup and Starting Point Options
A package advertised for Delhi travellers does not always begin in Delhi. Some begin at Leh Airport. Some at Manali. Some at Srinagar. Get the exact starting point in writing before payment.

For a flight-based package, confirm whether service begins at Delhi Airport or only after you land at Leh.

Reach Leh independently, join a fixed group. Lower transport cost, fixed timings. Check the missed-departure policy — flight delays are common.
Delhi → Manali Connection + Road Trip
Overnight Volvo or private vehicle to Manali, rest, then begin the Ladakh road journey. Needs more leave and several long road days.
Delhi → Srinagar Connection + Road Trip
Fly to Srinagar or reach Jammu and drive. Works best when Kashmir is part of the plan.
Private Cab All the Way From Delhi
Maximum flexibility, highest cost. Note that the vehicle may need to change in Ladakh because of local transport rules — the quotation must explain this.
Self Drive

Motorcycle Trip
Needs physical preparation, a reliable machine, riding gear, valid documents and realistic daily distances. Bike rental, fuel, mechanic support, backup vehicle and luggage transport are not automatically included. Check every line item.
Public Bus and Shared Taxi
Cheapest, most tiring. Several connections, fixed schedules, limited luggage. Fine for flexible solo travellers, poor for families.

How Many Days Are Enough for Leh Ladakh From Delhi?
A comfortable first Ladakh trip from Delhi needs at least six or seven days by flight. A road journey needs more, because the Delhi approach and overnight halts have to be counted too.
Do not confuse package duration with total time away from home.

Can You Visit Ladakh Over a Weekend From Delhi?
No. A normal two-day weekend is not a responsible Ladakh trip. Even a direct flight needs an arrival day and an acclimatisation day before you go anywhere higher. A long weekend may allow a short stay around Leh town — one delayed flight and you have nothing left.
If you want Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, plan a full week.
Is a Five or Six Day Trip Too Rushed?
A five or six-day flight-based trip works only if the route is kept small. Leh, a monastery day, one lake. It cannot absorb Tso Moriri, Hanle, Turtuk, Kargil and three passes.
Six nights gives real room for Leh + Nubra + Pangong. Even then, the first 48 hours must protect acclimatisation.
Practical Itinerary Structures From Delhi
These are formats, not fixed HimTrails itineraries.
Short flight-based trip
Delhi–Leh flights both ways. Leh, nearby monasteries, Sham Valley, Nubra, Pangong. Arrival period stays light. No Tso Moriri, no Hanle.
Comfortable flight-based trip
Time in Leh first, then Sham Valley, Nubra, Pangong, relaxed return. The extra day is your weather buffer.
Delhi – Manali – Leh road trip
Delhi to Manali, halt at Keylong or Jispa, then the high road to Leh, then Ladakh sightseeing on the remaining days.
Delhi – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh road trip
Through Sonamarg, Drass and Kargil into Leh, then Nubra and Pangong. Can exit via Manali.
Srinagar → Leh → Manali full circuit
Both highways, both approaches. Needs 10+ days and contingency time.
Flight in, road out
Fly to Leh, acclimatise, sightsee, exit by road.
Road in, flight out
Gradual entry, fast exit. Saves leave days.
Winter Ladakh

Delhi to Leh Ladakh Trip Cost: What Actually Changes the Price
There is no single fixed Delhi to Leh Ladakh trip cost. Our Ladakh packages start at ₹16,999 per person and run to ₹55,000+ for luxury circuits. Two trips of identical length can differ by ₹20,000 per person. Here is why.
Flight and Delhi Connection Costs
A package beginning at Leh Airport usually excludes Delhi–Leh airfare. A true Delhi departure package includes road transport or a bus connection. Airfare itself swings with date, demand and booking window — peak summer and long weekends cost most.
Private vs Shared Vehicle
A private cab costs more and gives you control. A shared departure lowers cost and removes flexibility.
Number of Travellers
Per-person transport cost falls as the vehicle fills. Always ask whether the quoted price is per person on double sharing, triple sharing, per room, per vehicle, or per motorcycle — and what the minimum group size is.
Route and Duration
A Leh-based package is priced very differently from a Delhi–Srinagar–Leh–Manali circuit. Tso Moriri, Hanle and Turtuk each add remote driving days and nights.
Accommodation Category
Hotels in Leh, guesthouses in Nubra villages, Swiss camps at Pangong. Confirm room type, attached washroom, hot water, heater arrangement and meal plan for every single night — remote camps are not Leh hotels.
Meals and Sightseeing
Most packages include breakfast and dinner. Lunch on long drive days, activities and personal orders may be separate. The driver allowance, tolls and parking should be listed explicitly.
Tourist Fees and Route Documentation
Inner Line Permit, environmental fee, wildlife fee and Red Cross contribution apply per person, per current rules. The quote must state which are included.
Motorcycle Package Costs
Check individually: rental · security deposit · fuel · helmets · riding gear · mechanic · spare parts · backup vehicle · luggage vehicle · damage policy. None of these are implied by the package title.

For a first Ladakh trip from Delhi, mid-June to early September is the right answer. For photographers and couples, late September is the quieter secret.
Snowfall is weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed for a fixed date.
Manali to Leh and Srinagar to Leh Highway Access
Both are seasonal roads. Opening and closing dates change every year with snowfall, clearance progress and official decisions.
A highway open when you book can close temporarily because of fresh snowfall, ice, landslides, water crossings, road maintenance, traffic control or administrative instructions.
Check status shortly before departure, and again before entering any remote section.
Manali–Leh Highway
Shorter operating season, higher passes. Conditions at Sarchu and Baralacha La change fast. Your package must include sensible halts and must not depend on a fixed opening date written months earlier.
Srinagar–Leh Highway
Zoji La, Drass, Kargil. Usually a longer operating window, but still governed by snow clearance, weather and traffic controls.
Access to Remote Ladakh Regions
Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Hanle and Turtuk are not guaranteed inclusions until current access is checked. Pass closure, road damage, permit changes, camp closure or vehicle restrictions can all force a change. A responsible itinerary carries alternatives instead of forcing the original route.
Altitude and Acclimatisation After Flying From Delhi
Leh is at 11,562 feet. You will be there 80 minutes after leaving Delhi at 216 feet. This is the single most important section on this page.
Keep the Arrival Day Light
Airport → hotel → rest. Water, simple food, no exertion. A gentle evening walk if you feel fine. No monastery climb. No high pass. No lake.
Do Not Overload Day Two
Local guidance is a minimum 48-hour acclimatisation window in Leh before proceeding to higher areas. Nearby low-effort sightseeing only, and only if you feel well.
Individual Responses Vary
A gradual road approach helps many people. It prevents nothing. Fitness is not protection — marathon runners get AMS and sedentary people sometimes do not.
Listen to Your Body
Do not go higher if you feel unwell. Tell the driver or trip team immediately. Oxygen cylinders (which we carry in every vehicle) support an emergency — they do not make a rushed itinerary safe.

Rules differ by nationality, route and current regulation. Do not rely on old travel articles.
- Indian citizens — Inner Line Permit for Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri and Hanle, issued at the Leh DC office, approximately ₹400–₹600 per person including wildlife and environmental fees.
- Foreign nationals — Protected Area Permit, with additional restrictions around Hanle and Turtuk.

Nubra Valley
150 km from Leh, across Khardung La (17,582 ft), dropping to a more breathable 10,000 ft. Diskit’s 32-metre Maitreya Buddha, the Hunder sand dunes, Bactrian camels along the Shyok. Two nights if you can. One feels rushed.
Pangong Tso
14,270 ft, reached via Chang La (17,590 ft), 5–6 hours from Leh. It changes colour through the day. Stay overnight at Spangmik or Man and wake at 5 am — that dawn silence is why people come. Check heating, hot water and washroom arrangements at the camp.
Tso Moriri
15,075 ft, 240 km from Leh via Tso Kar. Remote, cold, high, and what Pangong was twenty years ago. Needs 8+ days. Do not add it to a short package just to increase the destination count.
Hanle
India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, 270 km southeast of Leh. The Milky Way casts a visible shadow. Stricter permits, longer drives, 9+ day itineraries only.
Turtuk
The Balti village near the LoC, apricot trees along every path. Add to a longer Nubra plan — it changes the number of nights the valley needs.
Kargil, Drass and Lamayuru
Natural on a Srinagar–Leh road journey. Poor additions to a short flight-based package.
Umling La
Only when current access, permissions, road condition and traveller suitability are all confirmed. Never a standard inclusion.

Leh Ladakh Family Packages From Delhi
Ladakh with children is one of India’s most underrated family trips — if you plan the altitude honestly.
Our family Ladakh itineraries stretch the Leh acclimatisation to a full 48 hours, use Tangtse instead of Pangong shore for the overnight (roughly 3,000 feet lower), pick monasteries kids actually enjoy (Thiksey at morning prayer, Diskit for the giant Buddha), and stop every 90 minutes on long drives.
Travelling with children: discuss age, general health, food needs and tolerance for long drives before booking. Never plan a packed sightseeing day immediately after landing.

Ladakh Bike Trip From Delhi or Manali
We run guided bike expeditions on both the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh routes, with a backup SUV carrying luggage, spare tubes, oxygen and a mechanic. The route crosses Baralacha La, Tanglang La, Khardung La and Chang La in a single trip. Bikes are Royal Enfield Himalayan or Classic 500. Riders need a minimum of two years of highway experience.

Food During a Ladakh Trip
Leh has real variety. Nubra villages and highway dhabas do not.
Expect simple North Indian meals, rice-dal-sabzi-roti, Ladakhi and Tibetan food (skyu, thukpa, momos), tea, soups and noodles. Vegetarian is easy. Jain food needs advance notice and remote properties may simply be unable to comply.
On long road sections: carry snacks, carry water, eat light, do not depend on late-night restaurants, confirm whether lunch is included, and ask about food stops before remote drives.
Food near Pangong, Tso Moriri, Hanle and highway camps is basic. Plan accordingly.
