A 4×4 Expedition in Himachal Pradesh is a guided off-road journey through the state’s most remote and technically challenging routes — primarily Spiti Valley, Kinnaur Valley, the Chandratal approach, and the Manali-Leh Highway — using four-wheel-drive vehicles specifically chosen and equipped for high-altitude mountain terrain. Unlike a regular road trip, a 4×4 expedition involves high-clearance vehicles, experienced specialist drivers, proper safety infrastructure, and routes that are inaccessible to ordinary cars. HimTrails uses Mahindra Bolero 4WD, Toyota Innova 4×4, and Tata Safari 4WD vehicles for our expeditions. All vehicles are specifically serviced before every departure, carry recovery equipment (tow straps, chains, shovel), supplemental oxygen cylinders, and emergency first aid kits. We do not use standard 2WD vehicles on expedition routes — this is non-negotiable for your safety.

Yes — as a passenger. Our expeditions are guided and driven by HimTrails’ experienced Himalayan drivers. You do not need any off-road driving experience to join a HimTrails 4×4 Expedition. You simply ride as a passenger while our expert driver navigates the terrain. If you want to try driving on a specific easy section, this can sometimes be arranged — just let your guide know. Basic physical fitness is recommended as the high altitude (3,800m–5,000m) requires your body to work harder.

Summer (June–October): Both the Manali and Shimla routes are open. More destinations accessible, including Chandratal Lake and Kunzum Pass. Warmer days (10–20°C). Classic sightseeing at full capacity. Winter (December–March): Only the Shimla–Kinnaur route is open (Manali route closed due to snow). Temperatures reach −25°C at night. Fewer tourists — essentially no tourist crowds. The landscape transforms into a silent, frozen, otherworldly snowscape. Winter is HimTrails’ most exclusive and most memorable expedition season.

Indian nationals do not require special permits for Spiti Valley itself. However, the Kinnaur route near the Indo-Tibetan border requires an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for the Kinnaur–Spiti corridor. Rohtang Pass requires an online permit booked 2 days in advance. Chandratal Lake has a separate access permit. HimTrails handles all permit applications as part of the package — no paperwork for you.

We do not operate if conditions are genuinely unsafe — your safety is always our first priority.

HimTrails runs both group and private expeditions. Group expeditions typically have 6–12 participants across 2–3 vehicles. Private expeditions can be booked for 2–4 people in a single vehicle.
