Yes, September is usually a good month for Rohtang Pass. The monsoon is stepping back, the air clears up, and the views open out.

You get green slopes, clouds sitting low in the valley, waterfalls still running strong, and far fewer vehicles than the May-June rush.

But snow is not guaranteed. Come for the scenery, not for snow walls, and you will leave happy.

Road access depends on weather, District Kullu orders, BRO work, and a valid vehicle permit. None of those are fixed.

Is Rohtang Pass Open in September 2026?

September normally sits inside the Rohtang open season. But treat “open” as a moving thing, not a fixed answer.

Whether you actually get to the top depends on road safety, weather that morning, BRO work, permit availability, and whatever the District Kullu administration has ordered that week.

Why “open” changes week to week

District Kullu notices in 2026 show how partial this access can be. A May 2026 notice permitted tourist vehicles only up to Marhi.

A June 2026 notice later extended vehicular movement up to KM 46.35 on Rohtang Road.

So the road can be open, and you can still be stopped short of where you imagined standing.

For September 2026, check the current District Kullu notice and the permit portal close to your travel date. Not two months before.

Will You See Snow at Rohtang Pass in September?

Straight answer: no, not reliably.

September is not the month for roadside snow you can touch and photograph.

When you actually get snow

May and June are your months for old snow and snow walls along the road. If snow is the whole point of your trip, book those months instead.

The fresh snow gamble

Fresh snow can fall on the higher peaks around Rohtang in September. Peaks near Rohtang did see fresh snowfall on 2 September 2024.

But nobody can promise that for your dates. One traveller forum answer put September snow chances as very thin, and pointed out that fresh snow melts fast because daytime temperatures often stay above freezing.

Here is the honest negative most blogs will not tell you: if you drive up expecting a white landscape in September, you will feel let down. The people who enjoy Rohtang in September are the ones who came for clouds, cliffs and clear peaks.

Rohtang Pass Weather in September: Temperature, Rain and Visibility

The AccuWeather September 2026 forecast gives daily highs of 48°F to 58°F, roughly 9°C to 14°C.

Overnight lows run 25°F to 46°F, roughly -4°C to 8°C.

Average high for the month is 53°F, around 12°C. Average low is 36°F, around 2°C.

What that actually feels like on the road

In direct sun, standing still, it feels fine. You will see people in a single jacket taking photos.

Step into shade, or catch the wind, and it changes in seconds. Early morning at the top is genuinely cold.

Manali can feel pleasant while Rohtang feels like a different season. Do not judge the pass by the weather at your hotel.

Visibility and road quality

September comes after the July-August monsoon, so views are usually clearer. That is the real win.

But the same monsoon leaves the road behind. Expect broken patches, slush, potholes and delays from earlier rain damage.

Rohtang Pass Permit 2026: Fees, Documents and Booking Slots

Every tourist vehicle going beyond Gulaba towards Rohtang needs an online permit. No permit, no crossing. The check post does not negotiate.

What the permit covers

The tourism permit is valid for one day, to and fro. One day means one day.

Documents you need

You need valid ID proof, a valid PUC certificate, and the vehicle registration date.

Your vehicle must not be more than 10 years old. This catches out a lot of self-drive travellers who only find out at the portal.

Daily quota and booking windows

The daily quota is 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles.

Permit windows open at 10:00 and 16:00. Each window releases 400 petrol and 200 diesel slots.

You can only apply for the next 2 days from the current date. So you cannot lock this in weeks ahead.

Only 3 permits per vehicle are allowed in a Tuesday-to-Monday week.

Permit fee in 2026

The permit fee is ₹500.

The congestion charge is ₹50 for car, jeep and MUV. For bus and HMV it is ₹100.

So for a car, jeep or MUV, permit plus congestion comes to ₹550.

Printout is compulsory

Carry a physical printout. A screenshot on your phone is not enough.

This is the single most common reason we see travellers turned back at Gulaba. Print it in Manali the night before.

If you book a taxi

If you book a taxi locally, the driver or operator will often handle the permit booking.

Confirm this in advance, in writing on WhatsApp if possible. Do not assume it is included.

There is also a special Rohtang private vehicle permit quota of 60 petrol and 40 diesel vehicles daily, issued once per vehicle for the entire season.

Is Rohtang Closed on Tuesday in September?

This one is genuinely confusing right now, so read carefully.

The official live permit portal currently shows “NONE” as the maintenance day.

But the District Kullu May 2026 notice mentioned a Tuesday closure up to 19-05-2026 for BRO road surfacing work.

Several secondary sources still say Rohtang is closed every Tuesday. That conflicts with what the portal is currently showing.

What to actually do

Do not plan a Tuesday Rohtang trip without checking the live permit portal, the District Kullu notice, or a local operator first.

Anyone telling you Rohtang is closed every Tuesday through the whole September 2026 season is stating something we cannot confirm.

What we tell our travellers: keep Tuesday as your buffer day, not your Rohtang day. It costs you nothing and saves the trip.

How to Plan a One-Day Rohtang Pass Trip from Manali in September

Rohtang Pass sits about 51 km from Manali at 3,978 m, around 13,050 feet.

Fifty-one kilometres sounds like a two-hour round trip. It is not.

The drive takes far longer than the map suggests because of check-post delays, weather, traffic, roadwork and the fact that everyone stops for photos.

How the day flows

Start early from Manali. Earlier than you want to.

Cross the Gulaba check post with your permit printout in hand.

Stop at Rahala Falls or Marhi only if the route and parking rules allow that day. Parking rules change with the orders.

Spend your time at the permitted Rohtang point, whatever that point is on your date.

Turn back before late afternoon. Cold, fog and road risk all climb in the second half of the day.

The mistake most tourists make

Most people treat Rohtang as a half-day errand and book something else for the same evening.

Then the check post queue eats two hours and the whole day collapses. Give Rohtang the full day or do not go.

What to Wear and Carry for Rohtang Pass in September

Layers. That is the whole answer, but here is the detail.

Carry light thermals or a warm inner layer, a fleece or sweater over it, and a windproof jacket on top.

Wear comfortable shoes with grip. The ground up there is wet, loose and cold.

Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. The sun at 13,000 feet burns you even when you feel cold.

Carry water, light snacks and your personal medicines.

Keep your valid ID, the permit printout, and PUC plus vehicle documents if you are self-driving.

Carry motion sickness medicine if bends bother you. Those bends are relentless.

Why Manali weather misleads you

Manali sits low. Rohtang sits at 3,978 m with open wind.

We have watched travellers step out of the car in a t-shirt at the top and get back in within ninety seconds. Pack for the pass, not for your hotel balcony.

Rohtang Pass with Family, Kids or Elderly Travellers in September

Rohtang is doable with family, but plan it honestly.

You are dealing with altitude, cold wind, sharp bends, very limited facilities and long stretches of sitting in a vehicle.

Watch for these signs

If anyone feels dizzy, breathless, nauseous, unusually tired or just uncomfortable, cut the visit short and come down.

There is no reason to push. The photo is not worth it.

Do not make Rohtang your arrival-day activity

This is the biggest family mistake we see.

Do not go to Rohtang the morning after a tiring overnight bus or drive to Manali. Give the body one day at Manali altitude first.

Rohtang Pass by Own Car, Taxi, Bike or Bus in September

Own car

Flexible, and cheaper if you already drove up from Delhi or Chandigarh.

But the permit, ID, PUC, registration details, the 10-year vehicle age rule and the printout all become your problem. Miss one and you are turning around at Gulaba.

Taxi

Easier for most travellers, and what we usually recommend for first-timers.

Local drivers know the road, the check-post rules and when to turn back. That judgement is worth paying for.

Taxi rates vary by season, vehicle and how the day is going. Sources conflict, so fix your price in writing before you sit in the car.

Bike

Possible only if the road and local rules allow it on your date.

Be honest about the cold wind, slush, broken patches, traffic and how fast weather turns. This is not the ride to learn mountain riding on.

Bus and shared transport

Seasonal public or shared options may run.

We are not quoting a fare because the sources conflict. Check at the Manali bus stand or with a local operator on the day.

What to Do If the Rohtang Permit Is Sold Out or the Road Is Closed

First: this is normal. A backup plan in Himachal is not a failure, it is standard practice.

Your options

Solang Valley is the easiest swap and has activities running most of September.

Gulaba and Marhi, if the day’s order allows you up to them, still give you the climb and the views.

The Atal Tunnel side is the strongest backup. The tunnel bypasses Rohtang entirely and drops you into the Lahaul side.

Skip this

Do not pay a tout in Manali market who claims he can arrange a permit after the quota is gone. The quota is a quota. He cannot.

The money is gone and you still will not cross Gulaba.

Rohtang Pass vs Sissu in September: Which Is Better?

This depends entirely on what you actually want.

Choose Rohtang if

You want the classic Manali mountain pass experience. The old Himalayan crossing, the high-altitude road views, the feeling of climbing over something.

Rohtang has history and drama that a tunnel cannot give you.

Choose Sissu if

You want Lahaul scenery without the permit lottery and the queue.

The Atal Tunnel bypasses Rohtang and connects you towards the Lahaul-Spiti side. Depending on road status, it is smoother, faster and more reliable.

Sissu gives you the waterfall, the wide Chandra valley and a completely different landscape from Kullu-side green.

Suggested 3-Day Manali Itinerary with Rohtang Pass in September

Day 1: Arrive and stay low

Reach Manali and rest. Do not schedule anything heavy.

Do local sightseeing in the afternoon if you have energy. Mall Road, the Hadimba side, or Solang if time allows.

Day 2: Rohtang, if the mountains agree

Try Rohtang Pass if the permit, weather and road order all line up.

Keep the day loose. Do not book anything for the evening.

Day 3: Whatever Day 2 left undone

If Rohtang happened, use Day 3 for Sissu, the Atal Tunnel side, Solang Valley, or a slow Manali day.

If Rohtang did not happen, this is your second attempt or your Sissu day.

Local HimTrails Tips for Rohtang Pass in September

In our experience, September travellers enjoy Rohtang far more once they stop chasing snow and start looking at what is actually in front of them. The valley in September is at its best.

Our team recommends keeping Rohtang on the second day of your Manali stay, never on arrival day. The altitude gain hits harder than people expect after a night bus.

We always keep Sissu or Solang as a backup, because mountain roads do not care about your itinerary.

The chai stop nobody tells you about

The small dhabas at Marhi are the last proper hot food before the top. Hot Maggi and chai at that altitude, in that wind, is a different experience from the same thing in Manali.

If the day’s order lets you stop there, stop there.

Five things that save the trip

Check permits early, on the day the window opens. Waiting for the second window means fighting for leftovers.

Avoid Tuesday unless you have verified the closure status yourself.

Carry layers even if Manali is warm.

Leave room in your itinerary. Never book a same-evening activity after Rohtang.

Do not trust old Instagram reels for current snow status. That snow wall video was shot in May. It is not there in September.
