Chandratal in June 2026: Road Status, Weather, Camps and Best Time to Visit

You are currently viewing Chandratal in June 2026: Road Status, Weather, Camps and Best Time to Visit

Planning Chandratal in June is one of those things that sounds simple until you actually start looking at dates. The lake at 14,100 feet feels like the perfect early-summer escape, but June is the one month where two travellers can have completely different trips depending on which week they pick.

Here is the honest truth we tell everyone who calls our Shimla office. Early June and late June are almost two separate trips. Early June is a gamble on road clearance and camp setup. Late June is usually the sweet, quiet window before the July crowds arrive. This guide breaks down exactly what to expect week by week, so you can lock your dates without guessing.

Quick Answer: Chandratal in June 2026

Yes, Chandratal in June is possible, but the timing inside the month matters a lot. Early June (June 1 to 10) is uncertain because access depends on Kunzum Pass clearance and the rough Batal to Chandratal diversion road, which often opens last.

Late June (June 21 to 30) is usually the safer June window. Roads are more likely to be through, camps are more likely to be running, and the area still holds early-season beauty with snow on the higher ridges.

Either way, nights can drop to around 0°C, and you must confirm road and camp status on the same morning you leave. Not last week’s update. The same morning.

Is Chandratal Open in June 2026?

Beautiful view of Chandratal with clear blue water and peaceful landscapes

June is the opening and transition month for Chandratal. This is the time the lake goes from completely snowbound to gradually accessible as the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) clears Kunzum Pass and the roads feeding into the area.

Here is the part most people miss. Kunzum Pass can open before the Batal diversion road becomes fully usable. These are two separate stretches, cleared at different times. So “Kunzum is open” does not automatically mean “Chandratal is open.”

The 2026 picture has been a little messy, which is normal for June. The official Lahaul and Spiti district road status page, last updated around early June 2026, showed Delhi to Manali open, Manali to Keylong open, Keylong to Kaza closed, and Keylong to Leh open.

A live third-party road status page dated June 8, 2026 told a different story. It showed Chandratal open, Batal to Gramphu open, Kaza to Losar open, Kunzum Pass open only for chain or 4×4 vehicles, and the Atal Tunnel to Gramphu stretch open for 4×4 only.

Our own June 1, 2026 ground update matched the middle ground. Kunzum Pass and the Gramphu-Kaza-Sumdo highway were open for light 4×4 vehicles, but the Batal to Chandratal diversion and the camp setup still needed same-day verification.

When sources disagree like this, there is only one safe rule. Confirm the road status on the same morning you plan to drive up. Mountain roads here change overnight, and the official page often lags behind the actual ground reality by weeks.

For the season-long picture of when the lake opens and closes, our friends across the Spiti circuit cover it well, and you can also read our detailed Spiti Valley in July guide to see how conditions firm up after June.

Chandratal in Early June vs Mid June vs Late June

Chandratal in Himachal Pradesh, one of the most scenic high-altitude lakes in India

The single biggest mistake we see is people booking “June” as if the whole month is the same. It is not. Here is how the three windows actually behave.

Chandratal from June 1 to June 10

This is the most unpredictable period of the entire season. Kunzum Pass may be open, or it may still be restricted to 4×4 and chain-fitted vehicles only.

The Batal diversion can still have snow patches, slush, water crossings, or vehicle restrictions. Camps may not be properly set up yet, which means no hot meals, no blankets, and no backup if your plan falls apart.

In our experience, early June is not the right call for families, senior citizens, first-time high-altitude travellers, anyone in a sedan, or anyone on a fixed non-refundable plan. If your dates fall here, keep Chandratal optional, not the centrepiece.

Chandratal from June 11 to June 20

This is the transition window. Some years, camps start operating around this time. Some years, the road allows 4×4 vehicles first and regular cars a little later.

Conditions can still flip after a single snowfall, a rain spell, or a roadblock. Our team usually treats this stretch as “possible, but verify every single day” time. If you are flexible and willing to adjust, mid June can reward you with dramatic scenery and far fewer people.

Chandratal from June 21 to June 30

Late June is usually the best June window for most travellers. Roads are more likely to be fully through, camps are more likely to be functional, and you still get that raw early-season feel with snow lingering on the high ridges.

Another quiet advantage: late June is usually less crowded than July and August. You get the lake closer to how it should feel, without the weekend rush from Manali and Kaza.

Chandratal Weather in June: Day and Night Reality

Chandratal Lake surrounded by the stunning mountains of Spiti Valley

The Chandratal weather in June fools almost everyone who only looks at sunny photos. Daytime temperatures are commonly reported around 5°C to 10°C. With the sun out and no wind, the afternoon can feel genuinely pleasant.

Then the sun dips behind a ridge and everything changes fast. Night temperatures can drop to around 0°C, and the wind chill makes it feel a lot colder than the number suggests.

Chandratal sits at roughly 4,270 m to 4,300 m (about 14,100 to 14,220 ft). At that height the air is thin, so the sun feels sharp on your skin even when the air around you is cold. You can get sunburnt and shiver on the same afternoon.

The takeaway is simple. Plan for two climates in one day. A pleasant lunch by the water and a freezing evening at camp are both part of the June experience.

How Cold Does Chandratal Get at Night in June?

Chandratal Lake camping experience with beautiful views of the Himalayan landscape

Cold enough that a single jacket will not save you. We say this every season and people still underpack. The camps near Chandratal have no heating. Tent walls are thin, and the open camping area takes the wind head-on.

By 8 PM in June, you will want thermals, a fleece, a windproof layer, a cap, and gloves, all at once. The cold is not dangerous if you are prepared, but it is genuinely miserable if you are not.

If you are a first-time camper above 4,000 m, be honest with yourself about how you handle cold. For some travellers, a day visit to the lake makes far more sense than an overnight stay in a freezing tent.

Chandratal Camps in June and Camping Cost

Camping at chandratal

First, the rule that surprises most people. You cannot camp beside Chandratal Lake. It is a Ramsar-protected wetland, and pitching tents on the shore is not allowed.

Camps operate in designated areas away from the lake, commonly around 2 to 3 km away depending on the setup. From the parking or camp side, the final lake visit is a walk of roughly 1.5 to 2 km.

Early June camp availability is uncertain. Operators wait for night temperatures to stabilise before they set up tents, kitchens, and water lines. Late June gives you much better odds of finding functional camps.

How Much Does Chandratal Camping Cost in June 2026?

Basic camp stays are reported around ₹800 to ₹1,200 per person per night. Better camps with meals included are reported around ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per person per night.

One operator tariff we have seen lists a standard tent at ₹1,200 per person. The same operator lists a Swiss tent on double sharing at ₹2,100 per person, or ₹4,200 for two people, with breakfast, dinner and tea included.Treat that specific tariff as a sample only, because operator rates shift every season with road opening, occupancy and demand.

Before you pay anyone, ask these questions. Is the camp already set up for the season? Are meals included? What kind of toilet is available? How many blankets do they provide? How far is the walk to the lake? And most important, is the Batal road open today?

If you would rather skip the guesswork, our ready-made Spiti tour packages build a Chandratal overnight into a proper acclimatised circuit, with camp logistics handled for you.

How Do You Reach Chandratal in June?

There are two ways in, and they suit very different travellers. Here is how each one plays out in June.

Manali to Chandratal in June

Manali To Chandratal Road

The Manali to Chandratal route runs through the Atal Tunnel, then Sissu or Koksar, then Gramphu, then Batal, and finally the diversion to the lake.

The distance is about 120 to 130 km depending on the exact route. Drive time is commonly 6 to 8 hours, sometimes more, because the road quality past Gramphu slows everything down. The Batal to Chandratal diversion alone is around 14 km of rough track.

In early season, a high clearance vehicle or a 4×4 is strongly preferred. The bigger warning here is altitude. The Manali side gains height fast, so do not rush straight from Manali to Chandratal overnight, especially if you have come from the plains.

If Manali is your base, our Manali tour packages can pace the climb properly with a night at Sissu or the Lahaul side before you push higher.

Kaza to Chandratal in June

Kaza Monestory

The Kaza to Chandratal route runs through Losar, over Kunzum Pass, to the Batal diversion, and then to the lake.

Kaza to Chandratal is around 80 km, with a drive time of about 4 to 5 hours when the road is open. Kunzum Pass on this route sits at around 4,551 m, roughly 15,060 ft.

This side works best for travellers who are already on a Spiti circuit and have spent a few nights at altitude. Your body is adjusted, so the climb to the lake feels far easier.

Which Route Is Better in June?

If you are doing the full Spiti circuit, the Kaza side is usually better for acclimatisation, because you reach Chandratal already used to the height. The Manali side is shorter on the map but tougher on the body, because the altitude gain is sudden.

The best route is not just about distance. It depends on road status, your health, your vehicle, and whether you have already spent nights at altitude. Two people with the same dates can need two different routes.

Do You Need a Permit for Chandratal in 2026?

Chandratal travel view with mountains, open sky and calm lake reflections

Yes, for your vehicle. The official e-Aagman portal requires an E-Permit per vehicle for the Atal Tunnel Rohtang-Koksar-Chandratal circuit. The application page lists “E-permit Chandertal” as a request type, so this is built into the system.

Most travel guides agree that Indian nationals do not need a separate personal permit for Chandratal itself. The vehicle e-permit is the part that applies for the circuit. For 2026, treat e-Aagman as required if your vehicle is entering the Atal Tunnel Rohtang-Koksar-Chandratal circuit. Apply before you travel and keep a screenshot, because enforcement and rules can change.

There is also an entry fee. Multiple independent sources confirm a Chandratal entry fee of ₹150 for Indian visitors and ₹500 for foreign visitors, collected in cash at or near the Batal checkpost. Carry cash, because card machines and UPI do not work reliably this far out.

Foreign travellers should note one extra layer. If your Spiti itinerary includes restricted areas like Kaza or Tabo via the Kinnaur side, an Inner Line Permit may also apply. Carry a valid government photo ID for checks at all times.

Is Chandratal Safe in June?

Crystal-clear waters of Chandratal reflecting the beauty of Spiti Valley

Chandratal is safe in June when the timing, road, vehicle, health, and weather all line up. The lake itself is not the danger. The conditions around it are.

The real risks are altitude sickness, cold nights, water crossings, slush on the diversion road, and sudden road closures. On top of that, there is no reliable mobile network, no Wi-Fi, limited electricity at camps, basic toilets, and no quick medical help if something goes wrong.

The one rule we never bend: do not hide symptoms. If anyone in your group has a headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, or confusion, take it seriously and be ready to descend. At this altitude, “pushing through it” is the wrong call.

For solo travellers weighing up the risks, our take on Spiti safety for solo female travellers gives useful context on how to plan the wider region sensibly.

Who Should Avoid an Overnight Chandratal Stay in June?

Scenic Chandratal Lake, a must-visit destination on the Spiti Valley route

Overnight camping at Chandratal is not for everyone, and that is fine. Some people genuinely have a better trip with a day visit instead.

We usually advise against an overnight stay for senior citizens with health issues, and for small children if the family has not acclimatised first. The same goes for anyone with asthma, heart problems, high blood pressure, low oxygen issues, or serious cold sensitivity.

Travellers coming straight from Manali without an acclimatisation night should also think twice about camping high the same day. And honestly, if you expect hotel comfort, an attached washroom, heating, or phone network, an overnight tent at 14,100 feet will not make you happy.

This is not meant to scare anyone. It is just the honest version that a brochure will not give you.

Can Families, Kids and Senior Citizens Visit Chandratal in June?

Stunning landscape around Chandratal, also known as the Moon Lake of Himachal Pradesh

Yes, families can visit, but late June beats early June every time. The roads and camps are more settled, and the cold is slightly more forgiving.

The smart move for families is a slower Spiti circuit rather than a same-day altitude jump. Acclimatise at a stop like Kaza, Sissu, or Batal depending on your route before attempting Chandratal. Carry your regular medicines, and be ready to skip the lake if the road or anyone’s health looks shaky.

We will not give exact medical advice here, because that is your doctor’s job. What we will say is that a relaxed plan with buffer days is the difference between a happy family trip and a stressful one.

Can Bikers Visit Chandratal in June?

Bike Expeditions in Himachal

June can be beautiful for riders, with snow on the ridges and cool riding temperatures. But early June is risky, and late June is the smarter choice when the diversion road has settled.

Gear up properly. You want a real riding jacket, waterproof gloves, warm base layers, a puncture kit, cash, and offline maps. Never ride after dark on these roads. And cross the water sections earlier in the day, because melt-fed crossings get deeper and faster by the afternoon.

If you want the route scouted and backup sorted, ourbike expedition trips run this terrain every season with support vehicles.

Can You Drive Your Own Car to Chandratal in June?

4x4 Expedition in Himachal Pradesh

High ground clearance is strongly preferred. Sedans and low cars struggle badly on the Batal to Chandratal stretch, and you risk real damage.

If the road is freshly cleared after snow, use a local experienced driver or a proper 4×4. We will not promise that any particular car can make it, because that depends entirely on the day’s road condition.

The honest rule is the same one we give for the whole circuit. Verify the road for the exact day you are travelling, and match your vehicle to it. For the rough sections, our 4×4 expedition option exists for a reason.

What Should You Pack for Chandratal in June?

What Should I Pack

Pack for cold first, comfort second. Start with thermal innerwear, top and bottom, then a fleece, then a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Add a woollen cap, gloves, and warm woollen socks, because the cold gets in through your head and feet first.

Sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen are not optional at this altitude, even on cloudy days. Carry a power bank and a headlamp, since electricity at camps is limited and unreliable.

Bring enough cash for the entire trip, your personal medicines, a reusable water bottle, and offline maps downloaded in advance. If you are camping, a sleeping bag liner adds real warmth inside camp bedding. For full season-by-season packing detail, our camping guide is worth a read before you zip up your bag.

Chandratal in June Itinerary Options

Trip Itinerary

There is no single right plan. It depends on your time, your fitness, and whether you want a quick hit or the full circuit.

3-Day Manali to Chandratal Plan

Day 1 takes you from Manali to the Sissu or Batal side, depending on road and health. Day 2 is your Chandratal visit and overnight, but only if camps are confirmed and running. Day 3 is the return towards Manali.

This plan only works when road, weather, camp status, and health are all confirmed. We do not recommend a direct Manali to Chandratal overnight for first-timers, because the altitude gain is too fast for comfort. If anything looks off, switch to a day visit instead of camping.

7 to 9 Day Spiti Circuit with Chandratal

This is the better plan for almost everyone, mainly because it solves the acclimatisation problem. You enter Spiti from the Shimla and Kinnaur side, climb gradually through Kalpa and Tabo, settle into Kaza, then visit Chandratal, and exit towards Manali if the roads allow.

By the time you reach the lake, your body has had days to adjust, so the cold and the height feel manageable. Our Kinnaur tour packages cover the gentle Sangla and Kalpa entry, and the wider Spiti destination guide shows how the full loop fits together with Chandratal near the end.

June or July: Which Is Better for Chandratal?

chandratal in june stunning view

June gives you snow on the higher ridges, fewer crowds, and that early-season charm. The trade-off is road and camp uncertainty, especially in the first half of the month.

July is more reliable. Camps are fully running and road access is steadier. But it is busier, and the Manali approach can hit monsoon-related slush or landslides.

Late June sits in the middle and often wins. If the roads are open, you get July’s reliability with June’s quiet. If you want the easiest possible version with zero uncertainty, July or September are the safer bets.

Our Honest Verdict: Should You Plan Chandratal in June?

Yes, but mostly for late June and for travellers who can stay flexible. That is the version of June that works for most people.

Early June is for experienced travellers who can change plans on the fly without stress. Late June is the best June window for the average traveller. And if you want the smoothest, lowest-risk trip with the least chance of a wasted drive, July or September will treat you better.

The lake is worth the effort. You just have to time it right and respect the road. That is the whole game with Chandratal in June.
