Narkanda in December suits a cold, quiet hill-town break with a chance of snow, and that chance is better in the second half of the month. It does not suit a ski trip or a snow-or-nothing plan, because certified ski instruction here runs from January to March. Recent Decembers have swung between completely dry and snowy enough to shut roads.
The most common mistake is booking December as if snow and skiing come with the dates. That leads to prepaid ski lessons that have no official season to run in, or a fixed return date that clashes with a road closure. Plan December as a cold, quiet break with snow as a bonus, and keep skiing for January to March. The weather figures below come from IMD’s Shimla station, because no official Narkanda December normal exists. They are historical, not a forecast.
Quick Answer
Go in December if you want cold air, a quiet town and a chance of snow, with flexible dates. Prefer the second half: IMD says Shimla generally gets snow from the second fortnight of December, though its December average is only 7 cm. Leave skiing for January to March, when official instruction runs. Holidays carry no promise either, since Shimla recorded rain or snow on Christmas Day in only 9 of 40 years (1971–2010). Stay at least two nights, add a buffer day and finish every drive before sunset.

What Is Narkanda Like in December?

Narkanda is a small hill town and a nagar panchayat in Kumarsain subdivision of Shimla district. It sits at 2,708 m on the Indo-Tibet Road, about 60 km from Shimla.
This page covers December only. For stays, sights and other seasons, the HimTrails Narkanda travel guide gives you the wider picture.
December marks the start of winter here, not its peak. IMD’s Shimla records show far less snow in December than in January or February, so the cold usually arrives before the heavy snow does.
According to local belief, Mandodari constructed the Hatu Mata Temple. Visiting it in December needs more weather planning than any other outing, which the Hatu section below explains.
The honest catch is that December can go either way. Recent years have produced both a snowbound Christmas week and a December with no snow at all.
Narkanda Weather in December: What the Shimla Record Tells You

No official December climate normal exists for Narkanda itself. The closest long-term record comes from IMD’s Shimla station, so every figure here is Shimla station data, not Narkanda data. It is historical, not a forecast for December 2026.
IMD’s Shimla climatology records a December mean maximum of 13.1°C and a mean minimum of 4.8°C. Narkanda sits higher than Shimla, so do not read these as Narkanda readings. Pack as if it could feel colder.
Shimla averages 1.3 snowfall days in December. That figure explains why December snow is a possibility rather than a routine event.
Cold alone does not bring snow. IMD notes that snowfall generally occurs when the minimum temperature is below 1°C, so a cold, dry week can pass without any snow at all.
Time of day matters more than most first-time visitors expect. In IMD’s winter data for Shimla, the day’s lowest temperature comes around 7–8 am, with a steep rise between 8 am and noon.
That pattern shapes a sensible day. Avoid very early starts on cold mornings, keep outdoor time for late morning and early afternoon, and head indoors as the light fades.
Does It Snow in Narkanda in December?

Yes, it can, and the odds improve as the month goes on. IMD says Shimla generally experiences snowfall from the second fortnight of December to the first fortnight of March. That is a pattern, not a promise.
The amounts are modest. IMD records Shimla’s average December snowfall as 7 cm, based on the 1990–91 to 2010–11 winters, which is far less than January and February.
The longer trend also matters. IMD’s Shimla climatology noted that snowfall which historically came in December had, over the most recent fifteen years of its study, been arriving in January or early February. The same study recorded a significant decreasing trend in seasonal snowfall days from 1971 to 2010.
None of this predicts December 2026. It tells you how to plan: treat snow as a possible bonus, favour the second half of the month, and build a trip that still works on a dry day.
Early December vs Late December

The part of December you pick changes your snow odds more than anything else you control. Based on IMD’s Shimla pattern, snowfall is more likely in late December than in early December, though neither half guarantees it.
Daylight barely changes across the month, so it should not drive your decision. By Shimla times, sunrise moves from 07:02 to 07:19 and sunset from 17:19 to 17:29 during December 2026.
| Part of month | Snow chance (from IMD Shimla pattern) | Daylight (Shimla sunrise/sunset) | Holiday factor | Best for |
| Early December (around 1 Dec) | Lower; before IMD’s usual second-fortnight window | 07:02 / 17:19 | No Christmas or New Year dates | A cold, quiet break where snow is purely a bonus |
| Mid December (around 16 Dec) | Improving as the second fortnight begins | 07:12 / 17:21 | Before Christmas week | Snow-hopeful travellers who want to avoid holiday dates |
| Late December (around 31 Dec) | Better, inside the second-fortnight window; still not guaranteed | 07:19 / 17:29 | Christmas on Friday 25 December; New Year’s Eve | Snow-hopeful travellers with flexible dates and a buffer day |
What the Last Two Decembers Tell You

December 2024 and December 2025 show how far the month can swing.
On 23 December 2024, Shimla received 8 cm of snow, reported as its first December snowfall in three years. Kufri, Narkanda and the apple belt also received good snowfall, and over 100 roads were shut in Shimla district.
Four days later, heavy snow closed the Kufri–Narkanda road on the night of 27 December 2024, leaving vehicles stranded on the Shimla–Narkanda route. On 29 December 2024, over 200 roads in Himachal, including 3 national highways, were reported closed.
December 2025 went the other way. IMD data showed it had the sixth-lowest December rainfall on record for Himachal Pradesh, and a state official was quoted saying November and December 2025 had gone totally dry.
Widespread snowfall only returned on 23 January 2026, ending a nearly four-month dry spell.
This is the honest negative of a December trip. In one recent year, snow disrupted the road you need; in the next, no snow fell at all. For fixed-date and snow-first travellers, December is the least predictable month to plan around.
What Most Tourists Get Wrong About Narkanda in December

The usual mistake is assuming December guarantees two things: snow and skiing. Neither is guaranteed.
Skiing has a fixed official window. District Administration Shimla says certified instructors guide learners on Narkanda’s designated skiing grounds from January to March, and the Ministry of Tourism says the same.
Formal courses follow that calendar too. The current ABVIMAS seat chart for its Basic Snow Skiing Course lists slots between 11 January and 27 March, all at Solang in Manali, with none in December.
Snow is the other false assumption. A state official described November and December 2025 as totally dry, with no rain and no snowfall.
The better plan is simple. Book December as a cold, quiet break, enjoy snow if it comes, and plan any skiing for January to March.
Can You Ski in Narkanda in December?

Not reliably. Official instruction at Narkanda runs from January to March, so a December ski plan rests on luck rather than any published schedule.
ABVIMAS lists Basic, Intermediate and Advance Snow Skiing courses of 14 days each, plus a 7-day Elementary course, for its Solang (Manali) and Narkanda centres. No 2026–27 dates have been confirmed.
Its Basic Snow Skiing Course is open to ages 10 and above, with a listed fee of ₹16,000 per Indian participant. Even official slots can change: ABVIMAS cancelled a course slot due to start on 13 January 2024, by a notice dated 12 January 2024.
The expense to skip is a pre-booked December ski course or ski package. Paying ahead for a month outside the official instruction window gives ski-curious travellers little in return.
Here is the money-saving tip. Do not prepay ski lessons, equipment or “guaranteed snow” add-ons for December, and pay only once conditions are confirmed. The trade-off is that you may need to arrange things at short notice if snow does fall.
If skiing is the real goal, read the HimTrails page on skiing in Himachal Pradesh and plan for January to March. Even then, the trip depends on snow.
Shimla to Narkanda Road in December

Narkanda is about 60 km from Shimla on the Indo-Tibet Road. In December, the road’s condition depends on the weather before and during your journey, not on the calendar.
Snow has closed it before. As December 2024 showed, heavy snow can shut the Kufri–Narkanda stretch and strand vehicles on the route.
Authorities can also restrict evening traffic. In January 2020, Shimla’s Deputy Commissioner ordered vehicles stopped beyond Dhalli after 6 pm because of snow, and police escorted about 250 stranded vehicles near Kufri.
Your timing tip: reach Narkanda, and finish any Hatu outing, well before sunset. Shimla sunset falls between 17:19 and 17:29 across December 2026. After fresh snow, avoid evening drives entirely, because the 2020 restriction shows how a late start can leave you stuck on the wrong side of Dhalli.
IMD’s Meteorological Centre Shimla publishes district-wise warnings, nowcasts, a Shimla city forecast, a highway forecast and a tourism forecast. Few visitors know its Highway Weather Forecast includes a Shimla–Kalpa line. IMD does not name Narkanda, but this is the closest route forecast for the Shimla–Kinnaur road that passes the town.
Follow district administration and police advisories on the day, and never drive past a closure. Save 1077, Shimla district’s 24-hour disaster-management number, along with 100 for police and 101 for fire (checked on 27 October 2026).
Be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed snow for your dates. Nobody can make that promise honestly.
Getting to Narkanda by Bus or Taxi in December

District Administration Shimla’s guidance says buses towards Rampur and Narkanda run from ISBT Shimla every 2–3 hours. The bus ride takes 4–5 hours, while a private taxi, cab or tempo takes 3–4 hours.
These are broad official figures, not a timetable. Your actual time depends on traffic, stops and the road surface on the day.
Bus routing can change in snow. On 23 January 2026, during heavy snowfall, vehicle movement was partially restricted near Narkanda on NH-5, and Shimla–Rampur–Narkanda buses were diverted via Basantpur. When snow is falling or forecast, confirm the day’s routing before you leave.
For timings, seats and fares, check HRTC’s official booking system for your exact date.
Driving from Chandigarh, HPTDC lists Narkanda as 175 km away and a “five hours drive”. Treat that as an ordinary-conditions figure, not a December estimate.
Hatu Peak in December

Hatu Peak is a flexible outing in December, not a fixed booking. District Administration Shimla’s page says only 4×4 vehicles or small family cars, naming the Toyota Etios and Swift Dzire as examples, take visitors up to Hatu Peak.
That guidance is undated, does not address snow, and is not a legal rule. In December, access depends on the day’s conditions.
Ask locally on the day before you commit. Keep a town-based backup, such as a relaxed day around Narkanda itself, so the trip still works if the road is not passable.
Where to Stay: Check the Heater Before the View

In December, your room’s heating matters more than the window view. A room with a great outlook and no heater makes for a long, cold night.
Here is a detail many first-time visitors miss: some properties charge separately for heaters, so ask before you pay. Confirm that the room has a heater and whether a charge applies on top of the room rate.
HPTDC’s The Hatu is one property to check. It sits just off the Hindustan–Tibet highway, and Narkanda’s ski slopes are 1.5 km from the hotel. Its listed facilities include parking, taxi on demand, doctor on call and card payments. Heating is not listed, so confirm it directly.
For food, The Hatu also lists an in-house restaurant. That gives you a practical sit-down meal on a cold evening without driving after dark. Confirm the dinner timing when you book.

Christmas and New Year in Narkanda

Christmas falls on Friday 25 December 2026, with New Year’s Eve the following week. Holiday dates do not bring guaranteed snow.
IMD’s Christmas Day record for Shimla, covering 1971–2010, shows the maximum mostly between 10°C and 12°C and the minimum mostly between 2°C and 4°C. Rain or snow fell on 25 December in only 9 of those 40 years.
For New Year, the same Shimla record puts the probability of rain or snow on either 31 December or 1 January at 30%. Read these as Shimla context for Narkanda, not a forecast.
If you plan to spend part of the holidays in Shimla, the HimTrails Shimla Winter Carnival guide can help with that leg. Confirm this season’s event dates before you build plans around them.
What to Pack for Narkanda in December

Pack in layers rather than relying on one heavy coat. Shimla’s December mean minimum is 4.8°C at the station, Narkanda sits higher, and snow generally needs a minimum below 1°C. Layers let you adjust as the cold morning gives way to a milder afternoon.
- Thermal base layers
- An insulating mid-layer
- A windproof outer jacket
- Gloves and a woollen cap
- Warm socks and closed shoes with grip
- Personal medicines prescribed by your own doctor
Who Should Choose Narkanda in December — and Who Should Not

Choose December if you are a couple, family or slow traveller who wants cold mountain air, a quiet hill town and a chance of snow. It works best when your dates can flex, you add a buffer day, and you will be happy if no snow falls.
Families and senior parents can enjoy the month too, with a heated room, daylight-only drives and Hatu kept optional. Anyone with health concerns about cold weather should consult their own doctor first.
Skip December if skiing is the main goal, since official instruction runs January to March. It also suits snow-or-nothing travellers poorly, along with anyone on a tight fixed return, such as a flight the next morning.
Nervous drivers planning evening mountain drives should rethink that plan. Short days and past evening restrictions after snow make late drives the weakest part of a December trip.
If you are weighing the transition month before December, read Narkanda in November and compare the trade-offs.
What to Check 24–48 Hours Before You Leave

In December, the final checks matter as much as the booking. These six cover the weather, the road, transport and your room.
| What to check | Where | Why |
| IMD district warnings | IMD Meteorological Centre Shimla | Shows any active warning for Shimla district before you set out |
| Highway forecast (Shimla–Kalpa line) | IMD Meteorological Centre Shimla | The closest route forecast for the road past Narkanda |
| Road advisories | District Administration Shimla and police | Shows closures or restrictions on your route |
| Bus routing | HRTC’s official booking system | Buses were diverted via Basantpur in heavy snow in January 2026 |
| Heater and dinner timing | Your property | Some properties charge separately for heaters |
| Emergency numbers | 1077 (disaster management), 100 (police), 101 (fire) | Saves time if conditions change on the road |
These numbers were checked on 27 October 2026; confirm them again before you travel.
If a warning is active for your travel day, use your buffer day rather than pushing through. A two-night stay with a spare day makes that choice easy.
December or January–March? Choosing the Right Winter Month

Choose December for a cold, quiet break where snow is a possible bonus, especially in the second half. Choose January to March if skiing matters, since that is when certified instructors guide learners on Narkanda’s skiing grounds. Even then, skiing depends on snow.
If you would rather avoid winter uncertainty altogether, autumn is the simpler choice, so read Narkanda in October before you decide.
Final Verdict
December in Narkanda is worth booking for couples, families and slow travellers who want cold air, a quiet town and a chance of snow. Pick the second half of the month if snow matters, stay at least two nights with a buffer day, and confirm room heating and any heater charge before you pay.
Treat Hatu Peak as optional, check IMD warnings and the highway forecast 24–48 hours ahead, and finish every drive before sunset. Do not book December for skiing or guaranteed snow; plan January to March for that.
If you would rather start from a ready trip structure, browse the Narkanda tour packages and match one to your dates.
